570 and 971 Codes on Transcript - Stuck Since Acceptance on 1/31!
I was accepted on 1/31. Then got a 570 and 971 code shortly after and I haven't moved since! I'm so annoyed! 😡 Does anyone know of a phone number I can call and see what I need to do or if there is anything I can do?!?! My husband just got orders to PCS next month and we REALLY need this refund to help with moving expenses. I've been checking transcripts daily and following a systematic approach to resolving this but I'm at my wit's end now!

I was probably in a somewhat similar situation last month. Those codes usually, but not always, indicate that there's some kind of review happening with your return. The 570 is basically a freeze on your account while they look at something, and the 971 typically means they're sending you a notice explaining what's going on. Have you checked your mailbox? You might have received something already that explains the hold.

This is exactly right! Let me walk you through what these codes actually mean: 1. Code 570 - This is a temporary hold on your refund while the IRS reviews something 2. Code 971 - This means a notice has been generated and sent to you 3. Check your mail carefully - sometimes these notices look like junk mail 4. If you haven't received anything within 7-10 days of seeing these codes, it might be worth calling I've seen dozens of cases where people with these codes just needed to respond to a verification request!

Thank you for explaining this! I had the same codes last year and was pulling my hair out. Turned out they just needed to verify my identity because I had moved states. Once I called and confirmed some info, my refund was released within 10 days.

Based on the Transaction Code Sequence Analysis (TCSA), a 570/971 combination typically indicates a manual review process has been initiated. The Refund Hold (570) precedes the Notice Issuance (971) in standard IRS procedural workflow. For military families experiencing PCS orders, you may qualify for expedited processing by referencing your military status and imminent relocation requirements when communicating with the IRS. I recommend calling the dedicated military tax line at 1-866-562-5227 rather than the general IRS number.

I didn't know about the military tax line! That's really helpful. Do you know if they have specific hours? I'm worried because it's been exactly 47 days since I filed and 32 days since I got those codes. My transcript shows cycle date 20240805 which I think means it processed on February 21st, but nothing has updated since then.

I had the exact same issue back on February 12th this year. Called the regular IRS number for THREE DAYS straight and couldn't get through. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. Turns out they needed to verify my identity because I had moved since my last tax filing. After I confirmed some info, my refund was released on February 28th. Might be worth trying if you need answers quickly before your PCS. When exactly are you scheduled to move?

I went through this exact situation last year, but mine was much worse than what you're experiencing now. I had 570/971 codes that sat for almost 3 months with no movement. Unlike regular processing delays which typically resolve in 2-3 weeks, my issue required actual intervention. When I finally reached an agent, they explained that my return had been flagged for income verification due to a mismatched W-2. Once I faxed the correct documentation, my refund was processed within 10 days. Don't wait as long as I did to take action.

OMG I'm literally dealing w/ this rn too!! Been stuck since 2/14 w/ same codes! Called yesterday and FINALLY got thru after like 2hrs on hold. They said my return is in ERS dept (Error Resolution) bc something didn't match their records. Could be anything from SSN typo to income verification. They're SUPER backlogged so it could be another 4-6 wks!!! 😠If u need $ for PCS asap, maybe ask about hardship status? Gotta provide proof tho. GL!!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this stress right before a PCS! 😫 I had the EXACT same codes last year and felt completely helpless. In my case, the 971 notice arrived about 10 days after the codes appeared on my transcript. It turned out they needed verification of my childcare expenses. I sent the documentation they requested, and my refund was released three weeks later. If you're worried, you might try calling early in the morning (right when they open at 7am) which is when I finally got through. I know how stressful military moves are without tax issues on top of it!
