Where to apply for housing assistance while waiting for DEO benefits?
I've been stuck in adjudication with DEO for almost 7 weeks now and my savings are completely drained. My landlord is getting impatient and I'm worried about ending up homeless while waiting for my unemployment benefits to come through. Is there a website or place where I can apply for emergency housing or rental assistance in Florida? Has anyone here successfully gotten help with rent while waiting for their DEO payments to start? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, there are several options for housing assistance in Florida while your DEO claim is processing. Start with your county's Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP). You can also try Our Florida (though funding varies), Catholic Charities, and your local Community Action Agency. Make sure you have documentation showing your unemployment claim is pending - most programs require proof that you've applied for unemployment benefits. The 211 hotline can connect you with resources specific to your area.

•Thank you SO much for this info! I had no idea about the ERAP program. Do you know if there's a specific website I should go to, or do I need to google my county name + ERAP?

•Did they actually cover your FULL rent?? I called 211 last week and they just gave me a bunch of numbers to call, most of which said they were out of funds! This system is such garbage. DEO takes forever and then the help programs have no money. How is anyone supposed to survive???

I was in your exact situation 2 months ago. My claim was stuck for 9 weeks in adjudication! I needed to speak with someone at DEO to escalate my claim but couldn't get through on the phone. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a DEO agent within 30 minutes after trying for weeks. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj After talking to a real agent, they pushed my claim through, and I got all my back payments within a week. Might be worth trying while you're waiting for housing assistance to come through.

•I've never heard of this service before. Did you really get through to someone? I've been calling the DEO number for weeks and either get disconnected or wait on hold forever. I'll check out that video - at this point I'm desperate enough to try anything to get my claim moving.

•Salvation Army can be good, but they often require you to provide a pending eviction notice before they'll help. The County Housing Authority is another option - they sometimes have emergency vouchers for people waiting on unemployment benefits. Make sure you have all your documentation organized (unemployment claim number, bank statements showing financial hardship, any communication from DEO about your claim status).

I got soem help from my county's rental assistance program while waiting for DEO. took like 3 weeks to process but they paid my landlord directly. i found it by searching "[my county] rental assistance" - most counties have thier own program. bring ur DEO claim info and proof of income before unemployment to show them ur normally able to pay rent.

•3 weeks is faster than I expected! I'll try looking up my county's program today. My landlord has been patient so far but I don't want to push it any further. Did you have to show them your CONNECT account or something to prove you were waiting on unemployment?

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I waited 11 WEEKS in adjudication and had to borrow money from family to avoid eviction. By the time I got approved for rental assistance, my DEO payments finally started coming in. THESE PEOPLE DON'T CARE if we end up homeless while they take their sweet time processing our claims!!

•I understand your frustration. The system is definitely overloaded. One tip that might help others - if you're at immediate risk of eviction, contact Legal Aid in your county. They can often help delay eviction proceedings while you're waiting for benefits or assistance to come through. Florida law requires certain procedures before landlords can evict, and knowing your rights can buy you valuable time.

For housing assistance while waiting on DEO benefits, here's what worked for me: 1. Contact your County's Human Services department - they often have emergency assistance funds 2. Florida Housing Finance Corporation has resources: floridahousing.org 3. If you're in a larger city, many have their own emergency assistance programs 4. United Way's 211 service can connect you with local programs 5. Check if your area has a Community Action Agency Most importantly, get documentation from DEO showing your claim is in adjudication status. Screenshot your CONNECT account showing the pending claim. These agencies need proof you're waiting on unemployment benefits.

•Thank you for such a detailed response! I've got screenshots of my CONNECT account showing the adjudication status. I'll check out Florida Housing Finance Corporation today. Did any of these places help you directly, or are you just sharing what you know about?

BTW dont forget to keep doing your work searches every week even while ur in adjudication!! I messed up and missed submitting them for 2 weeks during my wait time and almost lost benefits for those weeks. DEO is super strict about this.

•Oh gosh, thank you for the reminder! I've been so stressed about the housing situation that I almost forgot to submit my work searches this week. Definitely don't want to mess that up and lose any benefits after waiting all this time.
