DEO extension approval timeline after exhausting regular benefits? Need answers fast!

So I've just used up all my regular unemployment benefits from Florida DEO and got the message in CONNECT saying I need to apply for the extension. I submitted the application for extended benefits yesterday, but I'm getting really nervous about a gap in my payments. My last regular payment comes this week, and rent is due in 10 days. Has anyone here gone through the process of getting approved for the DEO extension after exhausting regular benefits? How long did it take between applying and actually getting approved? Did your payments continue seamlessly or was there a gap? This waiting game is killing me and I'm afraid of falling behind on bills. I'm still doing all my 5 weekly work searches but haven't had any luck finding a job in my field (accounting). Any insight would be super helpful!

I went through this in January. Extension took about 4 weeks to process for me, and YEP there was definitely a gap in payments. I had to borrow money from family to cover rent. The DEO website says it should only take 7-10 days but thats BULL!!! Nothing ever happens that fast with them!!! Make sure u check that your work search requirements are actually entered in the system correctly - they denied my first extension application bcuz they said I didn't do enough work searches even tho I DID!!! Good luck, the system is totally rigged against us...

4 WEEKS?! Omg I'm going to be in serious trouble if it takes that long. Did you call them at all to try to speed things up? I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to make this go faster.

You got lucky then. Most people I know had to wait WAY longer. The DEO is a total mess.

The extension timeline varies quite a bit from person to person, but there are a few things to understand about the current process: 1. The standard Florida Extended Benefits (EB) program requires a separate review of your eligibility, which is why there's often a processing period. 2. The system will look at your work search activities very carefully during this transition, so make absolutely sure you're documenting all 5 required activities each week in detail. 3. For most people I've helped, the timeline is running about 2-3 weeks right now. Some get lucky with faster processing, while others might experience longer delays if there are any issues with their application. 4. Continue claiming weeks exactly as scheduled, even if you're not receiving payments during the review period. This ensures you'll receive all entitled benefits once approved. Make sure your contact information is up to date in CONNECT so you don't miss any fact-finding requests, as these can delay the process further.

Thank you for this detailed explanation. I've been claiming my weeks regularly and documenting everything carefully. Do you know if there's any way to check the status of my extension application specifically? When I log into CONNECT, I just see my regular claim information.

When I exhausted my regular benefits last year, I also hit this weird extension limbo. After waiting 2 weeks with no updates, I tried calling DEO directly but kept getting disconnected or endless hold times. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual DEO agent. They have this system that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Totally worth it for me since the agent was able to check my extension status directly and tell me exactly what was happening. They also have a video demo if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj In my case, there was actually a small issue with my extension application that wasn't visible in my CONNECT portal. The agent fixed it while I was on the phone, and my extension was approved 3 days later. Saved me weeks of waiting!

Thanks for the recommendation. I might give that a try if I don't see any movement in the next few days. Did the agent tell you what the issue was with your application? I'm wondering if I should be looking out for something specific.

Thanks for sharing! Did she have to call them about the missing week payment or did it just resolve itself?

The entire extension system is COMPLETELY BROKEN by design! I waited 7 weeks - SEVEN WEEKS!! - for my extension to be approved earlier this year. No communication, no updates, nothing on the portal. DEO doesn't care if we can't pay bills or buy food. They WANT people to give up! And when I finally got approved, they didn't even backpay me for the first 2 weeks I claimed during the wait period! I had to file an appeal to get that money, which took ANOTHER month. The whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up. My advice? Call them EVERY SINGLE DAY. Email your state rep. Make noise. The squeaky wheel gets the grease in this broken system.

While I understand your frustration, I want to clarify that extension applications should include all eligible weeks from the filing date. If you were missing weeks of payment after approval, that's definitely something that should be addressed through the appeals process, as you did. The system does have issues, but properly filed extensions should include retroactive payments for all eligible weeks claimed during the processing period.

To give you a better understanding of what's happening behind the scenes: when you apply for an extension, your claim enters what's called the "monetary redetermination" process. During this time, the system is verifying that you've met the earnings requirements and other eligibility criteria specific to the extended benefits program. The status in CONNECT often doesn't reflect this specialized review, which is why it can seem like nothing is happening. However, if you want to check your specific status, you can: 1. Go to the "Determination, Pending Issues and Decision Summary" section of CONNECT 2. Look for any items labeled as "Pending" related to "Extended Benefits" or "EB" 3. Check your inbox regularly for any fact-finding questionnaires Most importantly, continue claiming weeks as scheduled. Once approved, you should receive all back payments for properly claimed weeks during the wait period in a lump sum.

This is incredibly helpful! I just checked and I do see something labeled "EB Monetary Determination" under the pending issues section. I guess that means it's in process at least. I'll keep claiming my weeks as scheduled and hope it doesn't take too long. Thanks for explaining this!

One thing nobody mentioned yet - make sure you're still submitting your work search records on time even while waiting for the extension approval. I had a friend who thought he didn't need to submit them during the extension processing period, and he ended up having to appeal when they denied weeks because of missing work searches. The requirements don't pause just because you're waiting for the extension to be processed.

YES THIS!!! They'll use ANY excuse to deny benefits. The whole system is just looking for reasons to not pay people what they deserve.

My extension took 18 days to process back in March. Not terrible but definitely stressful. What helped me was that I had put a little aside from each payment knowing the extension might cause a gap. If you haven't already, might be worth talking to your landlord to give them a heads up about a possible late payment. Some are understanding if you communicate in advance.

That's good advice about talking to my landlord. I'll definitely give them a heads up. 18 days isn't great but it's better than some of the longer waits others have mentioned. Fingers crossed mine is on the shorter side.

Thanks for the reminder! I just double-checked my inbox and I don't see anything asking for additional documents yet, but I'll keep checking regularly.
