DEO benefits extension beyond July 31st - any confirmed updates?
Has anyone heard if the DEO is extending unemployment benefits after July 31st? My CONNECT account is showing that my benefit year ends then and I'm honestly freaking out. I've been on regular RA benefits since February and just started a part-time job, but it's nowhere near enough hours to cover my bills. I called the DEO three times this week but kept getting disconnected after 45+ minutes on hold. The last agent I spoke with last month mentioned something about a possible extension but couldn't confirm anything. Can't find any clear info on the DEO website either. Really stressing about this!

•Have you tried checking your CONNECT inbox? I've been obsessively checking mine daily hoping for some notification.

From what I understand, there isn't currently an automatic extension being processed for claims ending July 31st. The regular RA program in Florida provides benefits for up to 12 weeks (or up to 23 weeks if the state unemployment rate reaches certain thresholds). If your benefit year is ending, you would typically need to file a new application rather than expecting an extension of your current claim. The system will evaluate if you've earned sufficient wages in your base period to qualify for a new benefit year. Keep in mind that if you're working part-time, you need to report those earnings each time you claim weeks. You may still qualify for partial benefits depending on how much you earn compared to your weekly benefit amount.

•Thanks for the info! I've been reporting my part-time income every week. Do you know if there's a waiting period between when my current benefit year ends and when I can apply for a new one? I can't afford to go weeks without any income.

Florida DEO is THE WORST at communicating anything!!! I went through this last year and had to reapply after my benefit year ended. The system made me wait a full week after my benefit year ended before I could submit a new application. Then it took almost 3 weeks for them to process it! No income that whole time!! They don't care that people have bills to pay!!!!

I heard from my cousin who knows someone who works at DEO that they're planning to announce something about extensions next week. Not sure if it's true though.

•I would caution against relying on unofficial information. The DEO will post any official changes to their website and CONNECT system. Extensions are typically tied to specific federal legislation or state emergency measures, and I'm not aware of any such pending changes for July 31st.

I was in this same situation a few months ago. Here's what you need to know: 1. There is no automatic extension after your benefit year ends on July 31st. 2. You'll need to file a completely new application (not an extension) after your benefit year ends. 3. To qualify for a new claim, you need to have earned wages in at least 2 quarters of your new base period. 4. If you've only been working part-time since starting your last claim, you might not have enough earnings to qualify for a new claim period. 5. The system won't let you apply for a new claim until after your current benefit year officially ends. I recommend trying to reach a DEO agent directly to discuss your specific situation. I know it's almost impossible to get through their phone lines, but I finally had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they connected me to a DEO agent within 25 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj Having an actual conversation with a DEO agent about your specific case is really the only way to get accurate information about what options you'll have after July 31st.

•Thank you for the detailed info! That's really helpful. I've been working part-time for about 8 weeks now, but before that I had no income since starting unemployment in February. I'm worried I won't qualify for a new claim period. I'll definitely check out that Claimyr service - at this point I'd try anything to actually speak with someone who can give me real answers.

I just want to add that even if you don't qualify for a new DEO claim after your benefit year ends, you should check with CareerSource Florida. They sometimes have special programs for people transitioning off unemployment. They helped me find job training when my benefits ran out last year.

•That's a good suggestion, thanks! I'll reach out to them as a backup plan. I've been applying for full-time jobs like crazy but no luck yet.

am i the only 1 confused by all the different unemployment terms?? whats the difference between benefit year ending vs exhausting benefits vs extensions??? i thought i had until december but now im worried

•It can definitely be confusing! Here's a quick explanation: - Benefit Year: This is the 12-month period that begins when you first file your claim. Your claim ends when this year is over (like OP's ending on July 31st). - Exhausting Benefits: This means you've used all the weeks of benefits you were eligible for within your benefit year. In Florida, that's typically up to 12 weeks of regular benefits (or up to 23 weeks if state unemployment is high). - Extensions: These are additional weeks of benefits that might be available after you exhaust your regular benefits but before your benefit year ends. Extensions usually only exist during special circumstances (like during the pandemic) and require federal or state authorization. If your claim started in December of last year, your benefit year would end in December 2025, so you still have time left in your benefit year. But you should check how many weeks of benefits you were initially approved for to see if you might exhaust those weeks before December.

Update: I finally got through to DEO this morning after trying for 3 hours! The agent confirmed there's no automatic extension after July 31st. She said I need to wait until my benefit year officially ends, then file a completely new application. She also checked my work history and said I probably won't qualify for a new claim because I haven't earned enough in my base period. She suggested applying for other assistance programs through ACCESS Florida in the meantime. Not the news I was hoping for, but at least I know where I stand now.

•That's exactly what happened to me! The whole system is designed to cut people off even when they're still struggling. Make sure you apply for food assistance ASAP because that takes forever to process too!

•I'm sorry to hear that. Definitely follow up with CareerSource like I mentioned. Also check with your county's Community Action Agency - they sometimes have emergency assistance for rent and utilities that can help bridge the gap.
