DEO backdating confusion - missing payments since March filing date
My husband lost his job and filed for Florida unemployment on March 24, 2025. He FINALLY got his first payment on May 18 ($750), and since then he's received 4 more payments of $750 and one payment of $890. But I'm confused - shouldn't he be getting paid from his original filing date in March? That's almost 2 months of missing payments! The CONNECT dashboard doesn't show anything about backdated weeks or explain the random $890 payment. I've tried calling DEO every single day this week but keep getting disconnected or stuck on hold forever. Has anyone dealt with this? Is there actually a working phone number to reach a real person? What information should we have ready if we ever get through?

Yes, he should be eligible for benefits starting from his filing date IF he was claiming weeks properly during that entire time. The CONNECT system requires you to claim each biweekly period, even while waiting for the initial approval. Did he log in and claim all his weeks since March? If he missed claiming any weeks, DEO won't automatically pay those.

•I think that might be the issue! He was claiming weeks but didn't realize he had to do it every two weeks. He probably missed some in the beginning. Is there any way to claim those missed weeks now? Or are they just lost forever?

The weird $890 payment might be including some of the retroactive pay. Usually they pay $750/week now (based on the max $375/wk benefit). Sometimes they combine payments in strange ways. Check your CONNECT inbox for any determination letters - they sometimes explain payment breakdowns.

•Thanks, just checked and there's nothing in the inbox explaining the payments. The whole system is so confusing!

If he missed claiming weeks in the beginning, there's a process to request backdating, but you NEED to talk to a live agent. I was in the same situation last month and spent WEEKS trying to get through to DEO. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a live agent in about 20 minutes. They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj. The agent was able to help me request backdating for weeks I missed claiming at the beginning of my unemployment period.

•I've heard of that service. Does it actually work? I'm desperate to talk to someone at DEO but nervous about using outside services.

•It worked for me! Got connected to an actual DEO person who helped with my backdating request. Was honestly shocked after weeks of busy signals and disconnects. Just make sure you have all your info ready when they connect you.

DEO is THE WORST!!! My boyfriend had the same problem and never got his back payments from February. They STOLE two months of his money and keep saying "oh we're looking into it" every time he calls. Florida unemployment system is DESIGNED to frustrate people so they give up!!

•While the system definitely has issues, it's actually not designed to make you give up. There are specific rules about claiming weeks that have to be followed. I used to work with CareerSource and can tell you that many payment issues come down to missed steps in the claiming process. If your boyfriend missed submitting his biweekly claims during those months, he needs to specifically request backdating.

so if he didnt claim those weeks in the beginning you gotta ask for backdating. my cousin had to do it last yr. but u definitely need 2 talk to someone on the phone. good luck with that lol

•Thanks for confirming! That's what I suspected but wasn't sure. Now I just need to figure out how to actually talk to someone.

I had the exact same thing happen to me! The $890 payment is probably a week plus the $140 Federal Income Tax they took out of other weeks but didn't calculate correctly (happened to me). For backdating, you need to request it specifically - it's not automatic. Have you tried the DEO email? Sometimes I've had better luck with reemployment.assistance@deo.myflorida.com than calling.

•Thank you! That explanation about the $890 makes total sense. I'll try emailing that address today while still trying to get through on the phone.

To clarify what others have said: 1. For any missed weeks, he needs to request backdating specifically 2. This requires speaking with a DEO agent (or submitting the specific backdating form) 3. He has a limited time window to request backdating (usually 90 days from the missed weeks) 4. The $890 payment could be a combination of regular benefits plus Federal withholding adjustment When you do get through to DEO, have these ready: - His Claimant ID number - Social Security Number - The specific weeks he missed claiming - Employment details from those periods - Any confirmation emails/numbers from his original application The standard DEO number is 1-833-FL-APPLY (1-833-352-7759), but as you've discovered, it's notoriously difficult to get through.

•Thank you for this detailed list! We definitely need to request the backdating. The 90-day window is good to know - we're approaching that deadline. I'll keep trying that number with all his information ready.

Just to update my suggestion - I successfully used that Claimyr service mentioned above last week after 3 weeks of failed calling. The DEO agent I spoke with was able to review my account and process my backdating request right away. Had to provide proof that I was eligible during those weeks I didn't claim properly, so make sure you have your husband's employment termination documentation and any income records from those missing weeks.

•Thanks for sharing your experience! I think we'll try that service since we're running out of time with the 90-day window. I'll gather all his termination paperwork today.

my checks were all different amounts too. DEO math makes no sense sometimes lol

•RIGHT?? I swear they just make up numbers sometimes! One week $580, next week $750, then $680 with ZERO explanation!!!

I'm glad you're getting this resolved! For future reference, the proper steps after filing an initial claim are: 1. Submit initial application 2. Receive confirmation number 3. Set up CONNECT account 4. Log in every two weeks to claim weeks (even before approval) 5. Complete work search requirements (5 activities per week) 6. Report any earnings during claimed weeks Many people don't realize step 4 needs to happen regardless of claim status. The system doesn't clearly explain this, which is why so many people miss out on weeks they should receive.

•This is SO helpful - thank you! If we had known this from the beginning, we wouldn't be in this mess. I wish DEO made these steps clearer on their website or sent better instructions after applying.
