Received unexpected 1099-G from CA FTB - never got refund or benefits. What to do?

I just got a 1099-G from the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) but I never received any tax refund, unemployment, paid family leave, grants, or loans from them. Has anyone else experienced this? What should I do? I'm really confused and worried about how this might affect my taxes.

Ugh, that sucks. I had a similar issue last year. Have you tried contacting the FTB directly? They might be able to explain why you received it.

I've been trying to reach them for days but no luck. Their phone lines are always busy 😫

Yep, sounds about right. Their customer service is a joke. Keep trying tho, you'll get through eventually!

Pro tip: call right when they open. That's how I finally got through after weeks of trying.

This happened to me too! Turns out it was an error on their end. I had to file a dispute form and wait for them to correct it. It took a while but they eventually fixed it.

Oh wow, that's good to know. Do you remember which form you had to file?

I think it was called the FTB 3567 or something like that. Check their website, it should be under 'Correcting 1099-G' or similar.

Hey guys, I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/XbqD8mexcoQ

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

0 coins

Yeah, it actually does! I was skeptical at first too, but I was desperate after trying for weeks. It saved me hours of hold time.

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken 🤦‍♂️

I get it, but for me, it was worth it. Time is money, and I was wasting so much time on hold. Plus, the stress of not getting through was killing me.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Double-check that you didn't receive any payments you might have forgotten about. Sometimes these can be small amounts. 2. Contact the FTB directly. Use their online portal if possible, it's usually faster than phone. 3. If you can't reach them online, keep calling. Early morning is usually the best time. 4. While waiting, gather all your tax documents from last year. You might need them. 5. If it turns out to be an error, request a corrected 1099-G. Get this in writing. 6. Don't ignore it! If you file your taxes without addressing this, it could cause problems later. 7. Consider talking to a tax professional if you're unsure about anything. Remember, errors happen. Stay calm and persistent. Good luck!

Thank you so much for this detailed response! This is really helpful. I'll start working on this list right away.

Great advice! I'd add: keep a log of all your calls and attempts to contact them. It might come in handy if things escalate.

lol welcome to the wonderful world of CA bureaucracy 🤡 good luck getting this sorted, you're gonna need it

Has anyone tried contacting their state representative about these issues? I've heard sometimes they can help push things along with state agencies.

I did this last year for a different FTB issue. It actually helped! Took about 2 weeks, but my rep's office got things moving.

0 coins

Wow, never thought of that. Might give it a try if I can't get through to FTB. Thanks for the tip!

Quick question - did you move recently? I had a similar issue when I moved out of state. The FTB got confused and sent me a 1099-G for someone with a similar name. Took forever to sort out.

No, I've been at the same address for years. But that's interesting, I'll double check the name and address on the form just in case.

Ugh, the FTB is the worst. I've been dealing with them for months over a similar issue. Feels like I'm banging my head against a wall. Solidarity, OP! 💪

PSA: Always keep copies of ALL your tax documents, folks. You never know when you'll need them to dispute something like this. Learn from my mistakes! 😅

100% this! I started scanning everything and keeping it in a cloud drive. So much easier to find stuff now.

Have you checked your credit report? Just to make sure there's no funny business going on with your identity. Better safe than sorry!

That's a good idea, I hadn't even thought of that. I'll do that right away, thanks!
