Received unexpected 1099-G from CA FTB - No refund or benefits received. Identity theft?
I just got a 1099-G from the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) but I never received any tax refund, unemployment, paid family leave, grants, or loans from them. Has anyone else experienced this? What should I do? I'm worried about potential identity theft or tax implications.

Ugh, that sucks. I had a similar issue last year. First thing you should do is check your IRS tax transcript. It might show some transaction codes that could explain whats going on.

•Thanks for the tip! How do I access my IRS tax transcript? Is it something I can do online?

•Yeah, you can get it online. Just go to the IRS website and search for 'Get Transcript Online'. You'll need to create an account if you haven't already. It's pretty straightforward after that.

This happened to me too! Turns out someone had filed for unemployment using my info. Definitely contact the FTB ASAP and file a dispute. Also, freeze your credit reports just to be safe.

•It took about 3 months to get everything sorted out. The FTB was actually pretty helpful once I got through to them. Just be prepared for a lot of paperwork and follow-ups.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the FTB. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/XbqD8mexcoQ

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

•I was skeptical at first too, but it really did work for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

•I've used it before for the IRS. It's legit, just expensive. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do 🤷♂️

Here's what you need to do: 1. Don't panic! This is more common than you think. 2. Contact the CA FTB immediately. Use their online dispute form or call them directly. 3. Check your credit reports for any suspicious activity. 4. File an identity theft report with the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov 5. Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit reports. 6. Keep detailed records of all communications and actions taken. 7. If it turns out to be an error on their end, request a corrected 1099-G. 8. If identity theft is confirmed, file a police report. Remember, you're not responsible for taxes on income you didn't receive. Stay persistent and document everything!

•Great advice! I'd add: consider getting an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS. It's an extra layer of security for your tax returns.

Has anyone else noticed an increase in these kinds of issues lately? Feels like the system is really struggling to keep up with everything post-pandemic.

•For real. My sister and two of my coworkers have had similar problems in the last year. Something's definitely up.

•I work in tax prep, and we've seen a huge spike in these cases. The FTB is overwhelmed and understaffed.

Quick question - did you move recently or change jobs? Sometimes these issues can be caused by miscommunication between employers, states, or government agencies.

•Nope, I've been at the same job and address for the past 3 years. That's why this is so confusing to me.

•Hmm, that does make it more suspicious. Definitely follow up with the FTB then. Sounds like it could be an error or potential identity theft.

Pro tip: When you call the FTB, ask for a 'trace' on the reported payment. They can usually tell you when and how the payment was supposedly made, which can help identify if it's an error or fraud.

This happened to my neighbor and it turned out someone had intercepted her mail and redirected her tax refund. Make sure to check with USPS that there haven't been any unauthorized changes to your mailing address!

•Oh wow, I hadn't even thought of that possibility. Thanks for the heads up, I'll definitely check with USPS too.
