Fax numbers I have are: 619-525-4830 916-687-4423

Fax or call is fast but if there are lots of faxes coming, it could be misplaced. I like to fax when I have a number to confirm who will actually receive my fax. I would mail it with usps priority mail or call.

I was in a similar situation and was honest about my circumstances. I told them I was initially unaware that I qualified for as someone who was self-employed/gig worker, and only learned about the eligibility requirements when the pandemic programs were expanded. I also mentioned that I was trying to handle things on my own at first and didn't realize I could request a until I spoke with someone at EDD. Being straightforward about the confusion around eligibility and the learning process seemed to work in my favor. Good luck with your claim!

This is really helpful advice! I'm dealing with a similar situation and was worried about how to explain the delay. Your approach of being honest about not knowing the eligibility requirements makes a lot of sense. Did you have to provide any additional documentation to support your explanation, or was the verbal explanation sufficient when you spoke with them?

@Evan Kalinowski That s'exactly the approach I took too! I was upfront about not knowing folks could qualify initially. The EDD rep seemed understanding when I explained that I thought was only for traditional W-2 employees. They didn t'ask for extra documentation beyond what was already required for the request. Just be genuine about your situation - they ve'heard this story from a lot of people during the pandemic.

I went through this exact situation last year. The key is being completely honest about your circumstances. I told them I genuinely didn't realize that self-employed/gig workers were eligible for benefits, especially during the pandemic when new programs like PUA were introduced. I explained that I initially thought was only for traditional employees who lost W-2 jobs. When I finally learned about the expanded eligibility through a friend who had applied, that's when I decided to file and request the backdate. The EDD representative was understanding because so many people were in the same boat - the pandemic created a lot of confusion about who qualified for what benefits. Just stick to the truth about your timeline and why you waited, and you should be fine.

@Heather Tyson This is such good advice! I m'in the exact same situation right now and was so worried about how to explain the delay. It s'reassuring to hear that the EDD reps understand this was a confusing time for everyone. Did they ask you any follow-up questions about your timeline, or were they pretty accepting once you explained you didn t'know about the expanded eligibility? I m'nervous about the call but your experience gives me hope that being honest is really the best approach.

I went through this same situation and was really stressed about how to explain the delay. I ended up being completely honest - I told them I had no idea that people could even qualify for until someone mentioned it to me months later. I explained that I always thought was just for people who got laid off from regular jobs, and I didn't know about PUA or any of the pandemic programs until way after they started. The representative was actually really understanding about it because apparently tons of people were in the same boat. I think the key is just being genuine about not knowing rather than trying to come up with some complicated excuse. They seem to get that there was a lot of confusion during the pandemic about who qualified for what.

@LilMama23 Thank you so much for sharing your experience! This is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been losing sleep over this whole thing because I was worried they'd think I was trying to game the system or something. But you're absolutely right - there was SO much confusion during the pandemic about all these new programs. I literally had no clue that gig workers could get until my neighbor mentioned it to me like 6 months after I could have started filing. It's such a relief to know that EDD reps are understanding about this situation since it sounds like it happened to a lot of people. I'm definitely going to go with the honest approach when I call them.

I'm currently dealing with this exact situation and feeling really anxious about it. Reading everyone's responses here is so reassuring - I had no idea that being honest about not knowing the eligibility requirements was actually the best approach. I was doing freelance work and genuinely thought was only for people who got fired or laid off from regular jobs. It wasn't until my cousin mentioned PUA to me that I even realized I might qualify. I've been putting off calling EDD because I was worried they'd think I was trying to take advantage of the system, but now I see that a lot of people were in this same confusing situation during the pandemic. Thank you all for sharing your experiences - it really helps to know I'm not alone in this!
