No response after certification - does silent EDD mean approval?

I certified for UI benefits about 10 days ago after losing my graphic design job (they outsourced our whole department). My UI Online account shows the certification as 'received' but there's absolutely no other updates. No approval email, no payment pending, no messages in my inbox about interview requirements - literally nothing. Is this normal? If I was able to successfully certify, does that mean I've already been approved? I'm a first-timer to the unemployment system and honestly expected some kind of official 'congratulations, you're approved' message before certifying. My rent is due next week and I'm starting to stress. Do I need to call them or is the silent treatment actually a good sign?

not always. i certified 4 two weeks but didnt get paid for months bc they needed to verify my identity. ur supposed to get a letter or email saying ur approved before u can even certify but edd systems are weird. u should probably call them asap

Months?! Oh god that's terrifying. I literally can't wait months. I'm going to try calling tomorrow morning then. Thanks for the heads up!

Being able to certify doesn't automatically mean you're approved. Your claim could still be under review even though the certification system allows you to certify. EDD processes claims and certifications somewhat independently. You should have received an award letter (electronically or by mail) if your claim was approved. Check your UI Online inbox for any messages, and also check your spam folder for emails from EDD. If you don't see an award letter or any status updates within two weeks of filing, you should definitely contact EDD to check on your claim status.

I didn't get any award letter that I can find. I've checked my UI Online inbox multiple times a day and there's nothing new since my initial application confirmation. So frustrating that they let you certify before you're actually approved! Makes it seem like everything is proceeding normally.

THE SAME EXACT THING happened to me!!! I certified THREE times before finding out my claim had an eligibility issue they never told me about!! The system is COMPLETELY BROKEN!! They just let you keep certifying even when there's a problem and don't bother to notify you. Then when I finally reached someone they said I needed an eligibility interview but the wait time was 14 WEEKS for an interview slot. I almost got evicted waiting.

That's rough. Sorry you went through that. Did you ever get your benefits? I'm in a similar situation now and getting worried.

Yes but only after I basically harassed them with calls every day for a week. Finally got someone who pushed my interview up. The squeaky wheel definitely gets the grease with EDD.

Always check your claim status in the UI Online portal by clicking on "Claim Status" or "Claim Summary." It should show whether your claim is approved and if there are any pending issues. If it shows "pending" for more than 10 days, you definitely need to call. Don't assume silence means approval - EDD rarely works that way unfortunately. In fact, if you haven't received any communication after certification, that's often a sign something is on hold. The certification system and claim approval are separate processes that sometimes don't communicate well with each other internally.

Just checked both those sections again. Under Claim Status it just says "Filed" but doesn't say approved or pending. The Claim Summary page shows my weekly benefit amount calculation but still nothing about approval status. Seems like I definitely need to call based on everyone's feedback.

i got lucky last year when this happened to me, turns out they were just backed up processing claims and i got 3 weeks of payments all at once! but my roommate had the same thing happen and found out there was an issue with his id verification that no one told him about

I would love if that happened to me! But seems like I can't just assume that's what's going on. Did you ever call them or did the payments just show up?

I was in this exact situation last month. Kept trying to call EDD but couldn't get through for days. The regular phone line kept disconnecting me saying "we're experiencing high call volume" no matter what time I called. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD representative. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Turns out my claim had a verification flag that needed to be cleared, but I would never have known without talking to someone. The rep fixed it right on the call and my payment was released the next day. Might be worth a try if you can't get through on your own.

Yeah it worked for me. Got connected to EDD in about 25 minutes when I had been trying for days on my own with no luck.

To directly answer your question: No, being able to certify is NOT confirmation that your claim is approved. Here's what typically happens with a regular UI claim: 1. You file your initial claim 2. EDD reviews your eligibility (work history, reason for separation, identity, etc.) 3. You receive an award letter stating whether you're approved and your weekly benefit amount 4. You begin certifying for benefits 5. Payments are issued if your certifications are approved However, EDD sometimes allows certification before final approval, especially during high-volume periods. This can be confusing because it makes people think everything is proceeding normally. I definitely recommend contacting EDD to check your claim status if you haven't received any notification about your claim being approved.

Thank you for breaking it down so clearly. I definitely misunderstood the process. I'll call tomorrow first thing.

Any update? I'm going through something similar and wondering if you got it resolved.

Finally got through today after trying for 2 days! Turned out there was a verification issue with my employment history that they never notified me about. They're sending me a questionnaire I need to complete. Rep said I should continue certifying even though payments won't process until this is resolved. At least now I know what's happening instead of being in limbo!

@AstroAlpha That's great that you finally got through! At least now you know what's going on. How long did they say the questionnaire process usually takes? I'm probably going to have to deal with something similar since I'm also not getting any updates after certifying.
