Money Network card verification process - what ID info is required during activation?

I just received my Money Network card in the mail today after waiting 3 weeks since my first payment was approved. I'm nervous about activating it because I've heard so many fraud stories lately. For those who already have their cards working - what was the verification process like when you activated your card or created your PIN? Did they ask for your full social security number or just the last 4 digits? Did they require your birthday? Did they send a verification code to your email or phone? I want to make sure I'm prepared with all the right information when I call to activate. Also, is the activation process different if I'm doing it online versus calling the number on the back of the card? Thanks in advance!

I activated mine last month. They definitely asked for the last 4 digits of my SSN and my full birth date (month/day/year). I did it by phone using the number on the back of the card. The system also asked me to create a 4-digit PIN during the call. The whole process took about 5 minutes, and I didn't receive any verification codes via text or email. The card was ready to use immediately after activation.

Thank you! That's really helpful. Did they ask you any other verification questions? I'm still a bit paranoid after reading about all the scams targeting EDD recipients.

i did mine online thru the money network website and it was differnt from the phone process. they asked for my full SSN not just last 4 digits and my bday and then had to make a username/password AND a pin. took forever bc the site kept timing out. super annoying!!

Same here! That website is THE WORST. I had to try like 5 times because it kept crashing mid-registration. Finally gave up and just called the number on the card which was way easier.

The Money Network verification process is pretty standard across all activation methods. They'll need: - Last 4 digits of your SSN - Full date of birth - The card number and expiration date - Create a 4-digit PIN If you're activating online, you'll also need to create a username and password for the online portal. The phone activation is generally more reliable than the website, which can be buggy sometimes. Just make sure you're calling the official number printed on the back of your card (not some number you found online) to avoid scams. There's no email or text verification code sent during the standard activation process.

This is exactly what I needed to know - thank you! I think I'll use the phone method since it sounds more straightforward. Is the PIN you create during activation the same one you'll use at ATMs?

Yes, the PIN you create during activation is the same one you'll use at ATMs and for point-of-sale purchases when you select "debit" instead of "credit." Keep that PIN secure and don't share it with anyone.

BE CAREFUL with those cards!!! EDD and Money Network will NEVER call you asking for your card info or PIN!!! I got a call claiming they needed to "verify my card" but it was a SCAM trying to get my info. Always hang up and call the number on the back of your card if you get suspicious calls!!! They already stole $2700 from my neighbor's card last month!!!!!

That's so scary! Thanks for the warning. I'll definitely be careful and only call the number on the back of the card.

i got my card like 2 weeks ago and honestly dont even remember what they asked lol. i think it was birthday and last 4 of social? the whole thing took like 2 minutes tops. btw you can set up text alerts for transactions which is nice cause then you know if anyone tries to use your card

Has anyone had trouble getting through to EDD to ask about their card? I've been trying for DAYS to find out why my payment is still showing as issued but I haven't received my card yet. Always get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and then they hang up! So frustrating! I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me finally get through to an EDD agent yesterday. They basically call EDD for you and then connect you when they get through. Saved me hours of redial hell! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The agent told me my card was sent to an old address even though I updated it online months ago. They're sending a new one now.

is that service legit?? seems kinda sketchy that you have to pay someone just to talk to edd when its there job to help us

It worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for literally 3 days straight. The EDD phone system is completely broken - I'd rather pay someone to deal with that nightmare than waste another week trying. They got me through in about 45 minutes when I couldn't get through at all on my own.

One other thing to mention about Money Network card activation - if you already had an EDD debit card from a previous unemployment claim (like in 2022 or 2023), the verification process might be slightly different. In some cases, they'll ask you to verify information from your previous card before setting up the new one. Just something to be aware of if you've had unemployment benefits before.

I had SUCH A NIGHTMARE with my Money Network card! When I tried to activate it kept saying my info didn't match their records. Turns out EDD had my birthdate wrong by one digit!!! Took THREE WEEKS to fix because nobody at EDD would answer the phone. Meanwhile I had approved payments but couldn't access my money!! 😡😡😡

THIS!!! The EXACT same thing happened to my sister-in-law!! The EDD system had her birthday wrong and she couldn't activate her card. These people can't do ANYTHING right!!!!

Thank you all for the helpful responses! I'm going to try activating my card by phone today using the number on the back and make sure I have my SSN and birthdate ready. I'll also set up those text alerts that someone mentioned - sounds like a good security feature. It's definitely nerve-wracking dealing with all this unemployment stuff, but I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences!

Good luck with your activation! Just a heads up - after you activate and set up your PIN, I'd recommend doing a small test transaction first (like checking your balance at an ATM) before making any big purchases. That way you can make sure everything is working properly. Also, if you run into any issues during activation, don't panic - sometimes their system is just slow or temporarily down. Give it a few hours and try again before assuming there's a problem with your account info.

Just wanted to add my experience - I activated my Money Network card about 6 weeks ago and the phone activation was definitely the way to go. Like others mentioned, they asked for last 4 of SSN, full birthdate, and I created a PIN on the spot. The whole thing took maybe 3-4 minutes max. One tip though - make sure you're in a quiet place when you call because the automated system can be sensitive and if it can't understand you clearly it will make you repeat everything. Also, write down your PIN somewhere safe immediately after creating it - I almost forgot mine the first time I went to use the card at an ATM! The card worked perfectly right after activation and I've had zero issues with it since.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's a great tip about being in a quiet place for the automated system. I hadn't thought about that but it makes total sense. I'm definitely going to write down my PIN right away too - I can already picture myself panicking at the ATM trying to remember what I picked! Did you have any trouble finding fee-free ATMs to use with the Money Network card?

I just went through the Money Network card activation process last week and it was pretty straightforward! I called the number on the back of the card and they asked for my last 4 SSN digits, full birthdate, and the card number/expiration date. Then I created a 4-digit PIN right on the call. The whole thing took about 3 minutes. One thing I didn't see mentioned yet - they also asked me to verify the zip code associated with my EDD account, so make sure you know what address you have on file with them. The automated system was pretty clear and easy to follow. I was able to use my card at an ATM the same day to check my balance and everything worked perfectly. Definitely stick with calling rather than using the website - I tried the online activation first and it kept timing out like others mentioned. The phone method is much more reliable!
