How to check unemployment appeal status online with California EDD

I filed an unemployment appeal with California EDD about five weeks ago after getting hit with a disqualification notice that made zero sense. I work in the restaurant industry and got laid off when the location I managed permanently closed. Somehow EDD determined I was disqualified, said something about misconduct which is completely false. I submitted my appeal packet with all my documentation - termination letter, final pay stub, a written statement from my former general manager confirming the closure. Got a confirmation number and everything. Now five weeks have passed and I have absolutely no idea where things stand. I've been trying to figure out how to check my unemployment appeal status online because calling EDD has been a nightmare - either busy signals or I sit on hold for two hours and get disconnected. My UI Online account on myEDD just shows the original disqualification, nothing about the appeal at all. Is there somewhere else I should be looking? Do I need to log into a different portal? Did my appeal paperwork even get received? I'm honestly starting to panic because I have no income coming in while this is being sorted out and my rent is due in two weeks.

The California EDD appeal process is handled by the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, which is actually a completely separate agency from EDD itself. So that's why you're not seeing anything in your myEDD account - the CUIAB has its own case management system. You can check your appeal status at the CUIAB website directly. Go to cuiab.ca.gov and look for the case status lookup tool. You'll need your appeal case number, which should be on the acknowledgment letter they mailed you after receiving your appeal. If you never got that letter, that could mean your appeal wasn't received or there was a mail delay.

0 coins

Oh wow I had no idea appeals went to a completely different agency. I never got any acknowledgment letter in the mail - is that normal or does that mean my documents got lost? I sent everything certified mail.

0 coins

If you sent it certified mail you should have a delivery confirmation. That's your proof of receipt. But the acknowledgment letter from CUIAB typically takes 2-3 weeks to arrive. At 5 weeks you should have received it by now. I'd check the CUIAB website first and if your case doesn't show up there, you may need to contact them directly.

0 coins

This is correct. CUIAB is separate from EDD and they handle all appeal hearings. Just want to add that when you check status online at cuiab.ca.gov, the case statuses you might see are things like Appeal Filed, Hearing Scheduled, Decision Issued. If it still shows just Appeal Filed after 5 weeks that's actually pretty normal - the current backlog for hearing dates is running several months in most regions.

0 coins

same boat as you right now except mine has been 8 weeks with nothing. the CUIAB website does work for checking status but honestly half the time it just says pending and doesnt give you any real info. what i really needed was to talk to someone at EDD about whether my benefits were being held during the appeal and i literally could not get through to anyone for WEEKS

0 coins

Did you ever figure out the benefits during appeal question? I'm so confused about whether I should even keep filing my weekly certifications.

0 coins

yes keep filing!! someone finally told me you absolutely have to keep certifying every week or you forfeit those weeks even if you win the appeal. that was almost a disaster for me

0 coins

This is really important info. Always continue filing weekly certifications throughout the appeal process. If you win your appeal and EDD reverses the disqualification, they'll pay out all those weeks you certified for. If you stopped certifying you'd lose that money permanently.

0 coins

I went through an appeal last year for a similar situation and the thing that saved me was actually getting through to an EDD rep on the phone who could confirm my appeal was received and tell me what was happening with my payments. I know calling sounds impossible but I used a service called Claimyr that basically navigates the EDD phone system for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. It worked for me when I'd been trying on my own for two weeks straight. The site is claimyr.com and there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - honestly was the only way I got real answers about what was happening with my appeal case.

0 coins

I've never heard of this - does it actually work? I've wasted so many hours trying to get through to EDD.

0 coins

It worked for me. I was skeptical too but at that point I was desperate. Got connected to an agent who confirmed my appeal was in the system and explained the payment hold situation clearly.

0 coins

gonna look into this. been trying to call EDD for 3 days straight about my appeal and just keep getting the we cannot take your call message

0 coins

second this, used claimyr when my appeal status wasn't updating and the EDD agent I spoke with actually flagged something that needed to be corrected in my file. worth it just for that

0 coins

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN why EDD doesn't just let you see your appeal status in the same portal?? Like I have to go to a completely different website to check the status of something that started at EDD?? This system is SO broken. I've been dealing with this for months now and the lack of communication between EDD and CUIAB is infuriating. My hearing got rescheduled TWICE and I only found out by checking cuiab.ca.gov obsessively, never got any notification

0 coins

The separation exists because the appeals board is meant to be independent from EDD so they can rule impartially. Doesn't make it less frustrating from a claimant perspective though.

0 coins

i get it in theory but in practice it means claimants fall through the cracks constantly. and yes i know to keep certifying but nobody tells you that officially

0 coins

To directly answer your question about checking unemployment appeal status online: go to cuiab.ca.gov and use the Case Status tool in the navigation. You can look up by your case number OR by your Social Security number and last name. The statuses in the CUIAB system are pretty basic - it'll show Appeal Filed, Pending Hearing, Hearing Scheduled with a date and time, or Decision Issued. If Decision Issued appears you can also download the actual written decision from the portal which you'll need to send back to EDD if you won. Separately, your myEDD UI Online account won't reflect appeal updates but it WILL show when payments resume if EDD reverses the disqualification. So keep an eye on both portals.

0 coins

This is exactly what I needed, thank you. Going to the CUIAB site right now. What happens if my case number doesn't show up in the system?

0 coins

If it doesn't show up after 6 weeks from your filing date, you should call CUIAB directly at their main number (not EDD's number - they're different). CUIAB is generally easier to reach than EDD. Their number is on the cuiab.ca.gov website under Contact.

0 coins

also make sure you're checking the right regional office. CUIAB has multiple offices and your case gets assigned to the one in your area. the online lookup should work regardless but if you call make sure you're calling the right regional office

0 coins

wait so when you file an appeal does EDD just stop paying you completely while you wait?? im considering filing one and this thread is scaring me

0 coins

Generally yes, if you have a disqualification EDD stops or withholds payments while the appeal is pending. If you win the appeal they release all the back payments for weeks you continued to certify. This is why you absolutely must keep filing weekly certifications throughout the whole process even though you're not receiving payments - you're essentially preserving your right to those funds.

0 coins

ok that makes sense but it still seems really hard to go weeks or months without income. is there any way to request emergency payments or anything during the appeal?

0 coins

Unfortunately there's no official emergency payment mechanism during appeals. Some people look into other assistance programs locally while waiting. The reality is the appeals process was not designed with claimant financial hardship in mind.

0 coins

Something that helped me track my appeal was taking a screenshot of the CUIAB case status page every week with the date visible. When my hearing finally happened the judge asked about the timeline and I had a clear record. Also useful because if the status changes and then you have a question about it you have documentation of exactly when things changed.

0 coins

That's a really smart idea honestly. I'm going to start doing that.

0 coins

good advice. also screenshot any correspondence in your myEDD inbox related to the original disqualification. i didn't do that and then couldn't find something i needed for my hearing

0 coins

my appeal has been pending for 4 months now i check the cuiab site every day and it still just says hearing pending. has anyone had a case go this long without a hearing date? starting to think something is wrong with my case

0 coins

4 months without a hearing date isn't unusual unfortunately, especially in high-volume regions like Los Angeles or the Bay Area. The CUIAB backlog has been significant. However, if you want to confirm your case is actively in queue and hasn't had any procedural issues, it's worth calling CUIAB directly to ask. They're more reachable than EDD in my experience.

0 coins

should i be worried that i never got a written acknowledgment letter either? it just started showing in the online system but no physical mail

0 coins

The online system showing your case is actually better confirmation than a letter. That means it's in their system. The letters can get delayed or lost. As long as you can see your case in the CUIAB portal you're in the queue.

0 coins

One thing nobody mentioned yet - if you filed your appeal by mail and want to confirm EDD received it before it even got transferred to CUIAB, you can send a written inquiry to EDD directly. But honestly at this point if it's been 5 weeks and you can see your case in the CUIAB system, the process is working, just slowly.

0 coins

I just checked the CUIAB site and my case IS showing up! Shows Appeal Filed status. So that's a relief at least. Now I just wait for a hearing date?

0 coins

Yes, exactly. Once you see that status your case is in the queue. You'll eventually get a Notice of Hearing mailed to you with your date, time, and instructions. Make sure your mailing address is current in both myEDD and with CUIAB.

0 coins

Great news that it's in the system! Make sure you also have correct contact info with CUIAB specifically since they mail hearing notices separately from EDD communications.

0 coins

I had to appeal a disqualification two years ago and won. A few things I wish I'd known: 1) Start gathering ALL your evidence now don't wait til you get the hearing date because you'll have limited time then. 2) Request a copy of EDD's case file before your hearing, you're entitled to see what evidence they used. 3) Practice what you're going to say. The hearing is informal but you still need to be clear and organized. 4) If your employer participates in the hearing, listen carefully to what they say - you'll get a chance to respond.

0 coins

This is gold, thank you. I didn't know I could request EDD's case file. How do I do that?

0 coins

The Notice of Hearing you receive will have instructions for requesting the case file. There's usually a deadline to request it that's before the hearing date so don't wait. The file will show you exactly what EDD has on record as justification for the disqualification.

0 coins

The case file request is SO important. I didn't know about it for my first appeal and showed up basically blind. For my second one I got the file and immediately saw an error in what my employer reported. Made all the difference.

0 coins

adding to this thread because i just figured out something useful - if you go to your myEDD UI Online account and look under the Notifications or Messages section, sometimes EDD does send an internal message confirming they received your appeal paperwork and forwarded it to CUIAB. not everyone gets this but worth checking if you haven't already

0 coins

Just checked and I do have a message from about 3 weeks ago confirming my appeal was received and forwarded. I had no idea that was there, I'd been so focused on the main claims page.

0 coins

that's good news! so your documentation trail is complete. now it's just the waiting game with CUIAB unfortunately

0 coins

Good tip. The messages/notifications section of myEDD is underutilized - EDD sends various updates there that people miss because they're looking at the main claims status page.

0 coins

After reading this whole thread I finally understand why my appeal situation was so confusing. I kept calling EDD asking about my appeal and they kept saying they couldn't see anything related to it and I thought that meant my appeal was lost. Turns out they literally can't see CUIAB's system. Different agencies completely. Would have saved me weeks of stress if someone told me that upfront.

0 coins

same exact experience. EDD agents aren't unhelpful on purpose they just genuinely don't have access to the appeals board system. they can only confirm if they sent the appeal documents over to CUIAB.

0 coins

Right and that's actually useful to ask them! 'Can you confirm you forwarded my appeal to CUIAB' is a question EDD can answer even though they can't give you status updates after that point.

0 coins

I've been through 3 different EDD appeals over the years (don't ask lol, worked a lot of gig and temp jobs). Few things: the online status check at cuiab.ca.gov is reliable but slow to update - sometimes decisions are made and it takes 5-7 business days to show online. Also, hearing notices are mailed ONLY, they don't email or text you. So if you moved recently update your address with CUIAB directly, not just EDD. Those are separate address records.

0 coins

wait they really don't email hearing notices?? that seems insane in 2025

0 coins

Nope, still mail only for official hearing notices. The system is very traditional. Make sure whoever checks your mail isn't throwing away anything that looks like official government correspondence.

0 coins

This is a really important point about the address. My current address in myEDD is correct but I'm not sure if CUIAB has my updated address. Going to contact them to verify.

0 coins

something i want to flag for anyone reading this thread - if you get your hearing scheduled and then can't make it for some reason, you CAN request a postponement. you have to do it early enough before the hearing date though. missing a hearing without requesting a postponement can get your appeal dismissed which is a disaster. learned this the hard way

0 coins

How much notice do you need to give for a postponement request?

0 coins

I think it was at least a week before but honestly request it as soon as you know there's a conflict. The sooner the better. And you need a legitimate reason - they don't just postpone because you forgot or double-booked.

0 coins

Postponement requests should be made in writing to the CUIAB office handling your case. Include your case number, hearing date, and reason. Medical reasons, work conflicts, and documentation issues are generally accepted reasons.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I had an EDD disqualification for a misconduct allegation that was completely false (my former employer lied) and I won my appeal. The key was that I had text messages proving the situation was different than what my employer claimed. The ALJ was very thorough and asked good questions. The process is stressful but it can work if you have evidence.

0 coins

This is really encouraging. I also have documentation showing the misconduct claim is false including the business closure announcement and my termination letter citing the closure.

0 coins

That sounds like a strong case honestly. Business closure documentation directly contradicts a misconduct finding. Keep that evidence organized and ready to present clearly.

0 coins

Documents like that are exactly what wins appeals. The more concrete and objective the evidence the better. Testimony alone is harder to rely on when the employer can contradict it.

0 coins

Not to pile on but I want to mention one more thing about checking appeal status - sometimes the CUIAB website shows errors or just refuses to load the case lookup tool. If you've been trying and it keeps failing, try a different browser or clear your cache. Also try at different times of day, the site can be slow during business hours. Not a perfect system by any means.

0 coins

omg yes this happens to me all the time with the cuiab site, good to know it's not just me

0 coins

Yeah it's a pretty old system. Chrome and Firefox both work but sometimes one will have issues when the other doesn't.

0 coins

One more practical tip: once you win your appeal (thinking positive!) you'll receive a written decision from CUIAB. Don't just wait for EDD to automatically restore your benefits - take that decision letter and proactively contact EDD with it. Sometimes there's a delay between when CUIAB sends the decision to EDD and when EDD processes it. Calling EDD with your decision in hand can speed up payment restoration by a week or more.

0 coins

Good to know for when I get there. At this point I just want to get through the hearing first.

0 coins

Totally understandable. Just wanted to plant that info so you don't have to discover it when you're already exhausted from winning the appeal.

0 coins

This is when using something like Claimyr to reach an EDD agent is really useful too - once you have the decision you want to get through quickly and claimyr.com helped me get connected fast when I needed to push on payment restoration. That video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows the whole process if anyone wants to understand how it works before trying it.

0 coins

Has anyone dealt with an appeal where the employer didn't show up to the hearing? My employer was a no-show and I still had to present everything but the ALJ said that would factor into the decision. Eventually won but it was anticlimactic - I'd spent so long preparing to argue against my employer and then they just... weren't there.

0 coins

That actually happens fairly often. When employers don't appear, the ALJ still hears your side but they also note the employer's absence. It can definitely work in the claimant's favor, especially when the disqualification was based on the employer's allegations.

0 coins

Yeah I won pretty cleanly. Just took a while to get payments reinstated after the decision.

0 coins

I would honestly take an employer no-show over having to argue against them in real time. At least that way you control the entire narrative.

0 coins

Coming back to check in on OP - glad your case showed up in the CUIAB system. For anyone still struggling to get basic answers from EDD about their claim status while an appeal is pending, I'll second what someone mentioned earlier about Claimyr. The whole appeal process involves both EDD and CUIAB and sometimes you need to reach an actual EDD agent to sort out payment holds, address corrections, or just confirm what's in your file. Getting through EDD's phone system on your own right now is incredibly difficult. Claimyr at claimyr.com made it actually possible for me when I needed to resolve a payment hold during my appeal. That demo video https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains exactly what the service does.

0 coins

Bookmarking this for when I need it. Really appreciate everyone who responded in this thread, I went from completely panicked to actually understanding the process. Summary for anyone who finds this later: check cuiab.ca.gov for appeal status NOT myEDD, keep filing weekly certifications throughout, and make sure your address is updated with CUIAB separately from EDD.

0 coins

Great summary. Also worth adding: don't ignore any mail that looks like it came from a government office during your appeal - hearing notices come by mail only and missing one can be very costly.

0 coins

Good thread. And good luck OP, sounds like you have a solid case with the closure documentation. The appeals process is genuinely stressful but it exists for exactly this kind of situation where EDD made an incorrect determination.
