How do I check the status of my unemployment appeal with California EDD?

So I filed an appeal with California EDD about six weeks ago after my claim got disqualified. I sent in all my paperwork to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board and got a confirmation letter back saying they received everything. But since then... nothing. No hearing date, no updates, no correspondence. I log into UI Online every day and the claim status hasn't changed at all. I'm genuinely confused about how to check the status of my unemployment appeal because there doesn't seem to be any tracker or status page for appeals like there is for regular claims. Do I call EDD directly? Do I call the CUIAB? Are these even the same office? I've been living off my savings and I really need to know if this thing is actually moving forward or if my paperwork got lost somewhere. Anyone been through this process before?

The appeals process is handled by a completely separate agency from EDD - it's called the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, or CUIAB. So checking your claim status on UI Online won't show you anything useful about the appeal itself. You need to contact CUIAB directly at their main line or check if your local CUIAB office has a case status option. The confirmation letter you received should have a case number on it - that's what you'll need when you call.

0 coins

Oh wow I had no idea they were separate agencies. That explains so much. I've been calling EDD this whole time asking about my appeal and they keep telling me they can't see anything. Does CUIAB have a website where I can look up case status online?

0 coins

Unfortunately CUIAB doesn't have a great online portal for checking appeal status the way UI Online works for claims. Phone is really the most reliable method. When you call, have your case number, Social Security number, and the date you filed the appeal ready.

0 coins

Same experience here. The two agencies genuinely do not talk to each other well. My EDD rep once told me my appeal was 'still pending with us' when CUIAB had already scheduled my hearing two weeks prior.

0 coins

I went through an unemployment appeal last year and the waiting is absolutely brutal. A few things that actually helped me track progress: 1) Call CUIAB directly, the number varies by region so google your specific regional office. 2) Watch your mail obsessively because hearing notices come via postal mail only, no email. 3) If you filed more than 8 weeks ago with no hearing date, you can request an expedited review due to financial hardship - not many people know about this option.

0 coins

The financial hardship expedite is something I had no idea about. How do I request that exactly? Do I put it in writing?

0 coins

Yes, put it in writing and send it to your regional CUIAB office. Include documentation of your financial hardship - bank statements, bills, whatever shows the urgency. No guarantee it speeds things up dramatically but it goes on record.

0 coins

I tried the expedite request and it did shave about 2-3 weeks off my wait time. Definitely worth doing if you're struggling financially.

0 coins

wait there's a way to ask them to speed it up?? nobody told me that when i filed

Real talk - when I was trying to figure out how to check the status of my unemployment appeal I spent like three days just trying to get a human being on the phone at either EDD or CUIAB. Both lines were an absolute nightmare. A coworker mentioned Claimyr to me and I was skeptical but it genuinely got me connected to an EDD agent within a reasonable timeframe when I'd been getting busy signals and hangups for days. Site is claimyr.com and there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - even if EDD can't directly check your CUIAB appeal status, they CAN pull up your original disqualification details and confirm your appeal was properly logged on their end.

0 coins

I'll check this out, thank you. Even just getting confirmation from EDD that they have the appeal on file would give me some peace of mind at this point.

0 coins

does this actually work? every time i try to call edd i either get a busy signal or i wait 2 hours and then the call drops

0 coins

It worked for me twice now. Once for my appeal situation and once for a different issue with my weekly claims. Both times I got through when I'd been failing on my own for days.

0 coins

Going to look into this. I've literally taken days off work just to sit and redial EDD over and over.

0 coins

ok so genuine question - does checking your appeal status even matter if you can't do anything while waiting?? like they'll contact you when they have a hearing date right

0 coins

It matters for a few reasons actually. First, mail sometimes gets lost or goes to wrong addresses, so proactively checking ensures you don't miss your hearing date. Second, CUIAB may send requests for additional documentation before scheduling the hearing. If you miss those requests your case can get dismissed. Third, sometimes cases get closed in error and you need to catch that.

0 coins

oh ok that second point is important. didn't think about them asking for more documents

0 coins

This is exactly why I've been anxious about it. I moved recently and I'm worried about mail forwarding issues. Need to confirm my address is correct with CUIAB.

0 coins

I work in HR and we deal with unemployment appeals from the employer side fairly regularly. A few things claimants often don't realize: your appeal status at CUIAB is separate from your ongoing EDD benefit payments. If you were denied and appealed, you should still be filing your weekly certifications during the appeal period. If your appeal is approved, you'll receive back payment for those weeks - but only if you continued certifying. So many people stop certifying during appeals and then lose out on weeks of back pay they were entitled to.

0 coins

I actually stopped certifying after I got disqualified because I thought there was no point. This is alarming news. Can I still go back and certify retroactively?

0 coins

Contact EDD immediately about this. In some cases they can allow late certifications but it depends on your specific situation and timing. This is genuinely urgent - call them as soon as possible.

0 coins

Calling first thing tomorrow. Thank you for flagging this, I had no idea I was supposed to keep certifying.

0 coins

This is SO important and nobody tells you this upfront. I almost made the same mistake. Keep certifying even if you're disqualified and appealing!

0 coins

The timeline on unemployment appeals in California is something nobody prepares you for. My hearing wasn't scheduled until almost 4 months after I filed the appeal. Then after the hearing I waited another 6 weeks for the written decision. If you're expecting resolution in a few weeks you might want to mentally prepare for a longer process unfortunately.

0 coins

4 months before a hearing even gets scheduled... that's really discouraging to hear but I appreciate you being honest about it.

0 coins

I know it's rough. Make sure you have a solid hearing prep strategy when the time comes. The appeals judge will want specific dates, documentation, and a clear narrative. Cases are often won or lost based on how organized the claimant is at the hearing itself.

0 coins

my hearing was only 7 weeks after i filed so it varies a lot by region and current backlog

0 coins

Yeah the wait times are all over the place. I've heard everything from 5 weeks to 6+ months. Seems like it depends heavily on which regional CUIAB office handles your case.

0 coins

Not to derail but can someone clarify something - if you're appealing a disqualification are you appealing to get back on regular UI benefits or could it affect SDI or anything else? I got confused reading the CUIAB website

0 coins

UI appeals through CUIAB only affect your Unemployment Insurance benefits, not State Disability Insurance which is a completely separate program. SDI has its own appeal process through a different channel. So if your issue is UI disqualification, CUIAB is the right place - but if SDI was denied that's a different process entirely.

0 coins

Ok that makes sense, I was confused because I thought they might be connected. My issue is definitely UI so CUIAB is correct then. Thanks.

0 coins

Yeah EDD administers both but they're treated as completely separate programs with separate appeal paths. I know it's confusing because they're all under the EDD umbrella.

0 coins

I've been trying to check status of my unemployment appeal for WEEKS and every time I call CUIAB I either get a recording saying the office is closed during normal business hours or I get put on hold until the line disconnects. Is there any secret to actually getting through to them?

0 coins

Try calling right when they open - usually 8am. The lines fill up fast. Also Tuesday through Thursday tends to be slightly less congested than Mondays and Fridays in my experience.

0 coins

I've tried early morning and still no luck. Getting really desperate at this point.

0 coins

This is exactly when I'd suggest trying Claimyr again - claimyr.com. Even for CUIAB-related issues, getting through to EDD first to confirm your appeal is properly documented can unblock things. The video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows exactly how the callback system works. It won't directly reach CUIAB but getting EDD confirmation is a useful first step.

0 coins

Ok I'm going to try this today because I'm losing my mind trying to get through to anyone

0 coins

genuine question: what happens if you WIN the appeal? does EDD automatically start paying you again or do you have to do something to restart your claim

0 coins

When you win a CUIAB appeal, EDD is required to implement the decision but it doesn't always happen automatically or quickly. You should receive written notice of the decision and then EDD should process your back payments and reinstate your claim. But in practice many people have to follow up with EDD after winning to actually get their payments moving. Don't assume it'll happen automatically - monitor your UI Online account and be prepared to contact EDD if nothing changes within a couple weeks of receiving the decision.

0 coins

So even when you win you still have to chase them down. Sounds about right for EDD honestly

0 coins

Yep won my appeal in February and had to call EDD three separate times before they actually processed the back payments. The decision said I was entitled to benefits but nothing moved until I kept pushing.

0 coins

This is really valuable to know. Bookmarking this whole thread for when my hearing happens.

0 coins

Something I wish I'd known when I was in this exact situation - document EVERYTHING. Every call you make to EDD or CUIAB, write down the date, time, who you spoke to, and what they said. If something goes wrong or gets delayed you'll have a paper trail. Also screenshot your UI Online status pages regularly because sometimes statuses change without notification and you want records.

0 coins

This is really practical advice. I've been sloppy about keeping records. Starting a log today.

0 coins

Also keep copies of every document you submitted in your appeal packet. CUIAB occasionally claims not to have received documents and if you have proof of what you sent it saves a lot of headaches.

0 coins

The documentation point is so important. I won my appeal partly because I had detailed notes about what my employer told me versus what they told EDD. That inconsistency was a big part of my case.

0 coins

I had a different experience checking my appeal status - my regional CUIAB office actually had a really helpful automated phone line where I could enter my case number and get a basic status update without waiting for a human. Not sure if all regions have this but worth trying before you spend hours on hold

0 coins

Oh that would be amazing. Do you know which region you were in?

0 coins

I was dealing with the Los Angeles area office. The automated system wasn't super detailed but it at least told me my case was active and what stage it was in. Better than nothing.

0 coins

I'm in Northern California and our regional office definitely did not have that feature last I checked. These regional differences are maddening.

0 coins

Just want to share my full timeline for anyone who needs a realistic picture of how to check status of their unemployment appeal and what comes next. Filed appeal week 1. Got confirmation letter week 2. Called CUIAB week 5 to check status - was told case was assigned to a judge and in queue for hearing scheduling. Got hearing date notice by mail week 9. Hearing itself week 13. Written decision mailed week 17. EDD implemented decision week 19 after I called to follow up. Total time from appeal filing to money in my account: about 5 months. It's a marathon not a sprint.

0 coins

Thank you for laying this out so clearly. Five months is rough but at least I have realistic expectations now. Did you have to do anything special to prepare for the hearing itself?

0 coins

Prepare like you're presenting a case even though it's less formal than court. Organize your evidence chronologically, prepare to explain clearly why you believe the disqualification was incorrect, and anticipate what your former employer might argue since they'll likely participate too. Practice explaining your situation concisely.

0 coins

this timeline is so helpful thank you. currently at week 7 with no hearing date yet so sounds like I'm still in normal range

0 coins

Okay week 5 is when you called to check in - that's what I needed to know. I'm at week 4 so I'll give it one more week then call.

0 coins

Does anyone know if you can have someone represent you at the CUIAB hearing? Like can you bring a lawyer or someone who knows employment law?

0 coins

Yes absolutely. You can represent yourself, bring an attorney, or use a non-attorney representative. There are also legal aid organizations in California that sometimes help with unemployment appeals for free if you qualify based on income. Look up your local legal aid society or Bay Area Legal Aid, Bet Tzedek, or similar organizations depending on your region.

0 coins

The free legal aid option is really helpful to know about. I would have no idea how to navigate the hearing on my own.

0 coins

Having representation can genuinely improve your odds especially if your employer has HR or legal support on their side. The hearing is supposed to be informal but it helps to have someone who knows the procedural rules.

0 coins

slight panic moment reading this thread because I just realized I might have sent my appeal paperwork to the wrong address. I sent it to the EDD address on my disqualification notice instead of CUIAB. does this completely kill my appeal??

0 coins

Don't panic yet. EDD is supposed to forward appeal documents to CUIAB even if they're sent to the wrong office. However I would call EDD immediately to confirm they received it and ask them to confirm it was forwarded. Also note the date you sent it because your appeal timeline starts from when you filed it, not when CUIAB receives the forwarded documents - but only if you can prove when you originally sent it.

0 coins

Oh thank goodness there's a forwarding process. I sent it certified mail so I have the receipt with the date. Calling EDD right now to confirm.

0 coins

Also double check you're still within the appeal window. You typically have 30 days from the EDD decision date to file an appeal. If your timeline is tight this is urgent.

0 coins

I sent it on day 22 of the 30 day window so I should be okay timing-wise. Will report back after I call.

0 coins

this thread is so helpful. one thing i'm confused about - my disqualification letter says i was disqualified for 'voluntarily leaving without good cause' but I actually got laid off. feels like EDD has totally wrong information. would that be something i address in the appeal or is that a different process

0 coins

That is absolutely something you address in the appeal and it's actually a very common and often winnable situation. The employer told EDD you quit voluntarily and EDD took that at face value. In your appeal you present evidence showing you were laid off - any written communication about the layoff, your final pay stub, emails about position elimination, etc. The CUIAB judge will evaluate both your account and the employer's account.

0 coins

I have emails confirming my position was eliminated as part of a restructuring. That should be solid evidence right?

0 coins

That's exactly the kind of documentation that wins these cases. Make multiple copies and organize them clearly.

0 coins

I won my appeal with similar evidence. The employer told EDD I resigned but I had a termination letter. Judge sided with me immediately. Bring everything.

0 coins

Random but I want to mention that CUIAB hearings are often done by phone now rather than in person which makes them way less intimidating than I expected. You basically get on a conference call with the judge and whoever is representing the employer side and you each get to present your case. It's still nerve-wracking but easier than I anticipated.

0 coins

That's actually really reassuring. I was imagining having to go to some formal courtroom setting and that was stressing me out.

0 coins

No it's much more low-key than that. The judge I had was pretty patient about letting me explain my situation. Just be organized and direct.

0 coins

Mine was also by phone. The employer representative was way more aggressive than I expected though, so don't let the phone format make you too relaxed. Be ready to respond to their version of events.

0 coins

Good point about the employer side. Companies with HR departments often have people who do these hearings regularly and know exactly what to argue. Come prepared.

0 coins

I keep seeing people mention Claimyr in different EDD threads and finally tried it after reading this one. Got connected to an EDD agent in about 40 minutes when I'd been calling for three days straight. The agent confirmed my appeal was logged correctly on EDD's end and gave me the exact CUIAB case number I needed. Whole process from checking claimyr.com to getting my answer took less than an hour total. For anyone still struggling to get through, it's at claimyr.com with a walkthrough video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10

0 coins

Ok you've convinced me. Trying this today for real this time.

0 coins

Really glad this worked for you. I finally got through to EDD this morning using Claimyr and they confirmed my appeal is properly filed. Huge relief.

0 coins

waited way too long to try this, just used it and got confirmation on my case within an hour. worth it

0 coins

Update for anyone following - I'm OP and wanted to report back. I finally got everything sorted. Key things that helped me check the status of my unemployment appeal: 1) Called CUIAB directly with my case number from the confirmation letter - they confirmed my case is active and in the hearing scheduling queue. 2) Used Claimyr to get through to EDD and confirmed my appeal was properly logged and my address is correct in the system. 3) Went back and resumed my weekly certifications - apparently I should have never stopped. 4) Now just waiting for the hearing date notice by mail. Feeling much less panicked. Thank you everyone in this thread.

0 coins

Really glad you got clarity. The weekly certifications piece is so important - good that you caught that before too many weeks passed.

0 coins

Good luck with the hearing. Come back and update us when you get a decision!

0 coins

This is the update I needed to see. Following your lead on all these steps.

0 coins

Rooting for you. Come back and let us know how the hearing goes!
