How do you get unemployment in California? First time filing with EDD and confused

Ok so I just got laid off last Friday and I have no idea how any of this works. My coworker told me to apply for unemployment but I literally don't know where to start. Like how do you get unemployment benefits in California? Do I go somewhere in person or is it all online now? I've never had to do this before and my manager said it was my position being eliminated not a firing so I should qualify but I'm honestly not sure. I have about 3 weeks of savings before things get really tight so I'm kind of freaking out. Any help on where to even begin would be really appreciated.

First thing you need to know - in California all unemployment claims go through the EDD (Employment Development Department). The whole process is online now, no need to go anywhere in person. Here's the basic rundown of how to get unemployment benefits started: 1. Go to edd.ca.gov and create a myEDD account 2. Once you're logged in, click on UI Online to file your initial claim 3. You'll answer questions about your work history, why you left, and your personal info 4. After submitting, EDD will mail you a notice with your claim details Since your position was eliminated (that counts as a layoff), you almost certainly qualify. Being laid off is pretty much the clearest path to approval. The main things EDD checks are: did you earn enough in the past 18 months, and did you lose your job through no fault of your own. A position elimination hits both those marks. One thing people miss - you need to file your initial claim ASAP because your benefit year starts from the week you file, not the week you got laid off. Don't wait!

thank you so much this is really helpful. so i just go to edd.ca.gov right now and start? do i need anything ready before I begin the application?

0 coins

Yes, go now! Have your Social Security number, last employer's name and address, your employment dates, and your last day of work ready. Also helpful to have your bank account info if you want direct deposit set up right away. The whole initial claim takes maybe 30-45 minutes.

0 coins

Also just a heads up the website can be slow sometimes especially on Monday mornings. Try going midweek if it keeps timing out on you.

0 coins

To add to what the person above said - after you file your initial claim there's a one week unpaid waiting period before benefits start. So your first week is basically a zero-dollar week. Then starting week two you'll need to certify every two weeks through UI Online or by phone to actually get paid. A lot of first timers forget to certify and then wonder why they haven't gotten any money.

0 coins

wait so I won't get paid for the first week at all? that's rough but ok good to know

0 coins

Yeah the waiting week is annoying but it's standard in California. The good news is once you get rolling the payments come pretty regularly as long as you keep certifying on time.

0 coins

i didnt know about the waiting week either when i first applied, found out the hard way lol

0 coins

Something nobody told me when I first applied - you have to actively look for work while collecting unemployment in California. EDD requires you to do a certain number of job search activities each week and keep a record of them. If they ever audit you and you can't show your job search log, you could get disqualified or even hit with an overpayment notice. I learned this the hard way and it stressed me out majorly. Just document everything from day one - every application you submit, every employer you contact, every interview you go to.

0 coins

oh wow I had no idea about the job search requirements. how many applications do I need to do per week?

0 coins

Currently it's 3 job search activities per week. An 'activity' can be submitting an application, attending a job fair, doing an interview, etc. You also need to register with CalJOBS which is California's job search website. EDD will tell you about it in your award letter.

0 coins

this is important info. I got a letter once asking me to verify my job search activities and I almost panicked because I hadnt been keeping good records. turned out fine but keep a spreadsheet or something from the very start

0 coins

OK real talk about getting unemployment - the HARDEST part isn't applying, it's getting through to an actual EDD agent if something goes wrong with your claim. My claim got flagged for identity verification last year and I spent literal weeks trying to get someone on the phone. The hold times are insane and I kept getting disconnected after waiting for an hour plus. A friend finally told me about a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically gets you through to a live EDD agent without you having to sit on hold forever. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. I was skeptical but it genuinely connected me to an agent same day and I got my identity issue resolved. Hopefully OP won't need it but good to have in your back pocket just in case your claim hits a snag.

0 coins

oh interesting, saving that link just in case. fingers crossed my claim goes smoothly though

0 coins

I've heard of Claimyr before. Did it actually work for you or is it one of those things that just puts you in a regular queue anyway?

0 coins

Nope it actually worked - connected me to a real EDD rep within a few hours. Saved my sanity honestly. The phone system on its own is just brutal.

0 coins

Good to know about this. I've seen so many people in this forum completely stuck because they can't get through to EDD to fix a simple issue on their claim.

0 coins

One thing to be aware of - after you file your initial claim, EDD has to verify your identity. You'll get a notice directing you to ID.me to verify online. This is a newer requirement and some people get tripped up here because the ID.me process can be glitchy. Make sure you complete it promptly or your claim could get held up. Use a well-lit area for the selfie verification part and have your driver's license or passport ready.

0 coins

is the ID.me thing required for everyone or just some people?

0 coins

It's required for everyone now. California EDD uses ID.me for identity verification across the board. Most people get through it fine, occasionally it needs a video call with an ID.me agent if the automatic verification doesn't work.

0 coins

The ID.me thing took me like 4 attempts because my lighting was bad lol. Once I went outside in natural light it worked first try

How much you'll get per week depends on what you earned in what EDD calls your 'base period' - roughly the 12 months before you filed (with a quarter lag). The weekly benefit amount in California ranges from around $40 to $450. There's a calculator on edd.ca.gov if you want to estimate what you might get before your award letter comes. Most people who worked full time for at least a year get somewhere in the middle to upper range.

0 coins

$450 max seems low if you were making decent money... is that really the cap?

0 coins

Yeah California's max weekly benefit amount is $450 which is honestly not great compared to the cost of living here. There's been talk of raising it for years but it hasn't happened yet. It's meant to replace roughly 60-70% of wages for lower earners but obviously falls short for higher earners.

0 coins

450 a week is brutal in California lol but it's better than nothing I guess

0 coins

After you file and get approved you'll be assigned to certify either on the phone through EDD Tele-Cert or online through UI Online. I strongly recommend doing it online - it's faster and you can see your payment status right away. The Tele-Cert line can have long waits especially toward the end of the certification period. Set a reminder on your phone for your certification dates because missing them can delay your payments.

0 coins

what day do I certify? is it a specific day assigned to me?

0 coins

Your certification dates will be in your award letter. Usually EDD staggers them - some people certify Sunday/Monday, others different days. UI Online will show you exactly when your next certification is due.

0 coins

yep UI Online is way easier than Tele-Cert. once you do it a couple times it takes maybe 5 minutes

0 coins

Just want to add - if EDD sends you ANY mail, open it and respond immediately. A lot of people ignore mail thinking it's just informational and then miss a deadline to respond to something important. EDD uses mail for stuff like interview notices (where they want to ask you questions about your claim), requests for additional information, and disqualification notices. Missing a response deadline can mess up your whole claim and force you into an appeal situation which is a whole other headache.

0 coins

noted, will definitely open everything. what happens if I do get disqualified - is it hard to appeal?

0 coins

Appeals are doable but time consuming. You have 30 days from the date on the disqualification notice to file an appeal. You'd submit it to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board. Lots of people win appeals especially for layoffs since those are pretty clear cut. But obviously better to not need one in the first place.

0 coins

The disqualification notice will explain exactly why you were disqualified and give you the appeal instructions. For a clear layoff situation like OP's, disqualification would honestly be unusual - those claims tend to go through without issues.

went through this whole process 6 months ago after getting laid off from my tech job. honestly the application itself was straightforward. filed on a Tuesday, got my award letter the following week, first payment hit my Bank of America Visa debit (EDD issues payments to a debit card unless you set up direct deposit) about 3 weeks after I filed. my advice: 1) file immediately 2) set up direct deposit instead of the card 3) keep your job search log updated and 4) certify on time every single time. did all that and never had any issues with my claim.

0 coins

this is really reassuring thank you! how do I set up direct deposit instead of the card?

0 coins

In UI Online there's a payment preference section where you can enter your bank account info. Do it early. The EDD debit card they send is fine but I just prefer having money go straight to my bank.

0 coins

Second this. Direct deposit is faster too - you usually see the money 1-2 days earlier than with the debit card.

0 coins

anyone else find the UI Online interface confusing at first?? it took me a while to figure out where everything was. the certify for benefits button is kind of buried. once you find it and do it once it's obvious but the first time i was clicking around forever

0 coins

omg yes the interface is so outdated lol. but yeah once you know where to look it's fine

0 coins

haha good to know I'm not alone if I get confused clicking around in there

0 coins

This might be jumping ahead but since OP mentioned having only 3 weeks of savings - if your claim gets stuck in adjudication for any reason, getting it resolved quickly becomes urgent. Adjudication basically means EDD is reviewing whether you qualify and your payments are on hold while they investigate. It can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. The fastest way to get an update or get it resolved is to talk to an actual EDD agent, which as another commenter mentioned is easier said than done. I had a 5-week adjudication hold on my claim earlier this year for reasons I still don't fully understand. Eventually used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to EDD because I absolutely could not get through on my own. The agent I reached was able to tell me exactly what was triggering the hold and what I needed to submit to resolve it. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works before committing to it.

0 coins

5 weeks with no payment would be really scary. really hoping my claim doesn't end up in adjudication

0 coins

For a straightforward layoff it probably won't. Adjudication tends to happen when there's something complicated like a dispute with the employer, a separation that looks like a quit, or an identity flag. Your situation sounds clean.

0 coins

Exactly - position elimination layoffs rarely get flagged for adjudication. The employer basically confirms the layoff and EDD processes it. OP should be fine.

0 coins

I still get nervous every time I see my status change to anything other than paid lol. that adjudication thing is terrifying

0 coins

also make sure the email address you use for your myEDD account is one you check regularly. EDD sends notifications there and if you miss an email asking you to verify something or complete an action it can delay your claim. I had a notification sitting unread for almost a week once because it went to my spam folder. check spam too!

0 coins

great tip, will add edd.ca.gov to my safe senders list right now

0 coins

Smart! Also add ID.me to safe senders since you'll be getting verification emails from them too.

0 coins

ngl the first time I applied for unemployment I was embarrassed about it for some reason, like I felt like I was doing something wrong. just want to say to OP that this is literally what unemployment insurance is for. you and your employer have been paying into it your whole working career. getting laid off happens to tons of people and there's no shame in using the system you've been contributing to.

0 coins

honestly needed to hear this. I've been feeling weird about it too but you're right

0 coins

Totally normal feeling but shake it off. Use what you've earned.

0 coins

facts. unemployment is insurance not charity. no different than using your car insurance after an accident

0 coins

question for people who know - does it matter if OP was hourly vs salary? asking because my brother is in a similar situation and he was salary

0 coins

Doesn't matter for eligibility purposes. EDD looks at your total wages earned during the base period regardless of whether you were hourly or salary. Both qualify the same way as long as you meet the earnings requirements.

0 coins

ok cool telling my brother to go file now then thanks

0 coins

THE WORST is when you finally get approved and then your employer contests the claim. happened to me even though I was clearly laid off. my old company said I was terminated for performance which was completely false. had to do a phone interview with EDD, gather a bunch of documentation, the whole thing. took almost 2 months to sort out. just warning OP that even if everything seems straightforward employers sometimes push back especially bigger companies

0 coins

that sounds really stressful, did you win in the end?

0 coins

yes thankfully. I had emails from my manager talking about the position being cut due to budget so the evidence was pretty clear in my favor. but it added so much anxiety to an already stressful situation

0 coins

This is a good warning. Document EVERYTHING about your layoff - any emails, the separation paperwork, anything your employer gave you about the reason for termination. Keep it all just in case.

0 coins

Most employer contests like this eventually get resolved in the claimant's favor when it's a genuine layoff. The problem is the waiting and stress while it gets sorted out. Having documentation makes a huge difference.

0 coins

random tip but pick a specific time every certification period to do your weekly claims and just make it a habit. I do mine every other Sunday at 8pm like clockwork. never missed a certification in 8 months. the UI Online system is available 24/7 so you don't have to do it during business hours which is nice

0 coins

that's a good system. I'll probably do something similar once I get going

0 coins

Yeah it just becomes routine after a while. The questions are always the same - did you look for work, did you work, did you earn any wages, were you available and able to work. Takes like 3 minutes once you know what to expect.

0 coins

Something I haven't seen mentioned - if you get a part time job or do any gig work while collecting unemployment, you have to report those earnings when you certify. Don't try to hide it. EDD cross-references earnings with the state tax records and if they catch an undisclosed income they'll issue an overpayment notice and you'll have to pay back a big chunk plus potentially face fraud penalties. If you work part time you can still collect partial benefits, it just gets reduced based on what you earned.

0 coins

good to know - I was actually thinking about picking up some gig work while job hunting. so I can still collect unemployment while doing that as long as I report it?

0 coins

Yes exactly. California has a partial benefits formula - basically if you earn under a certain threshold in a week you still get some unemployment payment. Once you earn over a certain amount that week your benefit drops to zero for that week but you don't lose your claim. Just always report accurately.

0 coins

This is important and I'm glad someone brought it up. The partial benefits rules are actually pretty generous in California - you can do some part time or gig work without losing your benefits entirely as long as you're reporting properly.

0 coins

And EDD WILL find out about unreported income eventually. The overpayment and fraud process is way more painful than just reporting honestly. Not worth it at all.

0 coins

OP hope everything works out for you. Going through a layoff is rough but California's UI system is actually one of the more robust ones in the country even if dealing with EDD can be frustrating sometimes. The application process itself is usually pretty smooth for clear layoff cases. The main thing is just to get that initial claim filed today and then stay on top of certifying. You've got this.

0 coins

thank you everyone in this thread honestly. I went ahead and started my application while reading through all these replies. really glad I asked, feeling way less panicked now

0 coins

That's great! Good luck - come back and update us when you get approved 🤞

0 coins

Rooting for you! And seriously bookmark claimyr.com just in case anything snags on your claim - it's saved a lot of people in this forum a ton of headache when EDD becomes impossible to reach by phone. Hope you don't need it but good to have.
