How to do unemployment in California EDD - complete guide for first-time filers
Ok so I just got laid off from my warehouse job last week and I genuinely have no idea how to do unemployment. Like where do I even start? My coworker told me to just google it but every website I find is confusing and talks about stuff I don't understand. I've never filed for benefits before in my life. Do I go somewhere in person? Is there an app? Do I mail something? My manager said I'd get a 'separation notice' but I don't even know what that is or if I need it before I can file. I'm already stressed about money and the last thing I need is to mess something up and get denied. Can someone just walk me through the basics of how to do unemployment in California?

Hey, totally understand the overwhelm - first time filing can feel like learning a whole new language. Here's the straightforward breakdown of how to do unemployment in California: 1. Go to edd.ca.gov and click on 'File a UI Claim' - UI stands for Unemployment Insurance, that's what most people mean when they say 'unemployment' 2. You'll need to create a myEDD account first before you can actually file 3. Have your Social Security number, work history for the last 18 months, and your employer's contact info ready 4. The online application takes maybe 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready You do NOT need to wait for a separation notice to file - you can file right away. In fact the sooner the better because there's a one-week waiting period built in and you want that clock to start ticking. After you file your initial claim, EDD will mail you a notice telling you your weekly benefit amount and when to start filing your weekly certifications. That weekly cert is how you actually get paid each week - you have to certify that you were available for work, looked for jobs, and didn't earn over a certain amount.

Authorwait so I have to do something every week? I thought you just file once and then get paid automatically

Anastasia Popova
Yes, the weekly certification is required every single week. You log back into UI Online and answer questions about that week - whether you worked, how much you earned, whether you were available for work, etc. If you skip a week you can lose those benefits permanently. Set a reminder on your phone for the same day each week.

also want to add - the weekly cert opens on Sunday and you have until the following Saturday to complete it. Most people do it Sunday morning to get payment deposited faster

One thing nobody tells first-time claimants - your benefit amount is based on the highest earning quarter during your base period (roughly the 16-18 months before you filed). California EDD calculates it automatically from wage records your employer submits, but it's worth knowing so you understand why your weekly amount is what it is. Maximum weekly benefit in California right now is around $450.

Authorso they already have my wage info from my job? I don't have to submit pay stubs or anything?

Zara Shah
Right, employers report wages to EDD quarterly. You might need pay stubs if there's a discrepancy but usually they pull it automatically. If your base period wages seem wrong you can dispute it.

this happened to me actually, my last employer had reported wrong wages and my weekly amount was way lower than it should have been. had to submit proof to get it corrected took like 3 weeks

For the job search requirement - once you're approved you're required to do a minimum number of job search activities each week (currently 3 activities per week in California). Keep a log! Write down the company name, position, date, and how you applied. EDD can audit you and if you can't prove your job searches you could get disqualified and have to pay benefits back. I use a simple spreadsheet.

omg I had NO idea about the job search thing. I've been collecting for 2 months and just figured I'd find something whenever. am I in trouble???

If EDD hasn't contacted you about it yet you might be ok but I'd definitely start keeping records NOW. Some people get audited months later. You can also try to recreate your search history from your email or LinkedIn if you did apply to places, just didn't document it formally.

the job search requirement is serious, don't sleep on it. my cousin got hit with an overpayment notice because she couldn't prove her searches during a random audit. had to pay back like $2,800

Honestly the hardest part of how to do unemployment isn't the filing - it's getting anyone at EDD on the phone if something goes wrong. Their phone lines are an absolute nightmare. I spent 3 weeks trying to reach someone when my claim went into adjudication and couldn't get through. Someone here actually recommended Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that basically holds your place in the phone queue and calls you back when an agent is available. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. Used it myself and finally got through to a live agent after weeks of getting nowhere on my own.

Diego Mendoza
Authorwait why would a brand new claim go into adjudication? is that common?
0 coins
Aisha Hussain
Adjudication just means EDD needs to investigate something before approving - could be they need to verify why you left your job, confirm you're eligible, or your employer contested the claim. Super common, nothing to panic about necessarily. But it can drag on for weeks and that's when being able to actually reach a phone agent matters.

seconding the Claimyr rec - I used it when my weekly certifications weren't processing and it saved me so much stress. way better than redialing 800-300-5616 for 6 hours

DONT FORGET TO REGISTER ON CALJOBS.CA.GOV!!!! this is one the biggest things first timers miss. EDD requires you to register on CalJOBS within 21 days of filing or your claim can be suspended. its the states job search database and you have to create a profile and resume there. took me forever to figure out why my payments stopped and it was because i never did this step

Diego Mendoza
Authoroh no I definitely haven't done this yet. How do I find it?

just google CalJOBS California and it'll come up, it's a state website. make your account and upload or create your resume. it's clunky but just get through it

Confirming this is real and required. CalJOBS registration is mandatory for most claimants. Good catch.

Few practical tips from someone who's been through the California EDD process multiple times unfortunately lol: - File online, not by phone. The phone claim process is outdated and slower - Use Chrome or Firefox, the UI Online portal has issues with Safari sometimes - Screenshot EVERYTHING. Every confirmation, every submission, every page. You'll thank yourself later if there's ever a dispute - Your EDD Customer Account Number (EDDCAN) will be mailed to you - you need it for certain things so don't throw away that letter - If you had any self-employment income in the last year, mention it accurately - underreporting can cause issues later

Authorthe screenshot advice is gold, I would never have thought of that

Seriously. I had a situation where EDD claimed I hadn't submitted a weekly cert and I had the screenshot proving I did. Saved me from an overpayment notice.

can someone explain what 'able and available' means? I saw it on the weekly cert questions and wasn't sure exactly what they're asking
0 coins
Anastasia Popova
Able and' available means you were physically and mentally able to work and available to accept a job if one was offered to you during that week. If you were sick, traveling out of state without your'employer s permission to work remotely, or otherwise'couldn t have started a job that week, you might not qualify for that week. Answerhonestly.

what if I went camping for a weekend during the week, does that count as not available
0 coins
Zara Shah
A short weekend trip generally doesn't make you unavailable - you're still available for most of the week. If you're gone for the entire week or can't be reached for job interviews that's different. Use your judgment and be honest.

Mateo Martinez
just answer yes if you were available for most of the week and could have accepted work. people overthink this one

I work in HR and see the other side of unemployment claims - when employees file, we get a notice asking if we contest the claim. Heads up: if you were laid off for lack of work (business reasons), employers almost never contest. If you were fired for cause or quit, they often do contest and that triggers adjudication where EDD investigates. Knowing this helps you understand why your claim might be delayed.

Diego Mendoza
AuthorI was laid off due to slow business season, my whole department got cut. does that mean I should be fine?
0 coins
Ethan Clark
That sounds like a standard layoff which is the clearest path to approval. As long as you meet the wage requirements from your base period you should be in good shape.

this is really helpful context. I got fired and my claim is in adjudication right now, guess that makes sense now

The EDD debit card situation confused me at first so just to clarify for new people - California EDD sends your payments via Bank of America debit card (the EDD prepaid debit card) OR you can set up direct deposit to your own bank account. I HIGHLY recommend setting up direct deposit. Takes an extra day or two to set up initially but way more reliable than waiting for the card to arrive or worrying about it getting lost.
0 coins
Diego Mendoza
Authorhow do I set up direct deposit? is that done during the initial application?
0 coins
Mateo Martinez
You can do it during the application OR after approval in UI Online. Go to 'Payment Preferences' once you're logged in. You'll need your bank routing and account numbers.
0 coins
Sean Flanagan
Direct deposit is definitely the move. My card got flagged as fraud once by Bank of America and my payments were frozen for 2 weeks while I sorted it out. Never again.

nobody told me when I first filed that there are different types of situations that affect unemployment differently. like if you QUIT your job you have to prove 'good cause' to get benefits - can't just quit because you didn't like the job. if you got fired it depends on what you were fired for. if you were laid off you're usually fine. these are very different paths through EDD and confuse a lot of people
0 coins
Nia Wilson
what counts as 'good cause' for quitting? asking for a friend lol
0 coins
Carmen Ruiz
Legitimate good cause examples: unsafe working conditions that were reported and not fixed, significant reduction in pay or hours, harassment that was reported, medical issues, or having to care for a family member with no other option. 'My boss was annoying' or 'I wanted to try something new' doesn't qualify unfortunately.

Just want to share my timeline so first-timers know what to expect: Filed online on a Monday. Got email confirmation same day. EDD mailed me my award letter (showing my weekly benefit amount) about 10 days later. First weekly cert was available 2 weeks after I filed. Got my first payment deposited 3 days after I submitted that first cert. So from filing to first payment was about 3 weeks total. Your experience may vary but that was mine.

Diego Mendoza
AuthorThis is exactly the kind of timeline info I needed thank you

Yuki Sato
Also forgot to mention - you don't get paid for the first week of your claim, that's the mandatory waiting week. So even if everything goes perfectly you'll wait that extra week. Plan your budget accordingly.

my timeline was way longer because I went into adjudication. 8 weeks before I saw a single payment. the waiting is brutal

For anyone who can't get through to EDD by phone (which is basically everyone), the official alternatives are: 1. Ask EDD - the online messaging system in UI Online. Responses take 5-7 business days usually 2. Visit an EDD field office in person - bring ID and all your claim documents 3. Contact your state assembly member's office - they have EDD liaisons who can sometimes help escalate issues The phone system is 800-300-5616 and the least busy times are supposedly early Tuesday or Wednesday mornings right when they open at 8am.

The assembly member trick actually works, I've used it. But if you need something resolved faster, that's when a service like Claimyr is worth it - claimyr.com gets you connected to an actual EDD phone agent without the hours of hold time. It's what I used when my claim was stuck and the online messaging wasn't cutting it. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10

I've recommended the assembly member office route to a few employees who had EDD issues. It's underutilized and genuinely effective for complicated situations.

random tip that helped me - when doing your weekly cert, be very careful with the earnings questions. If you did ANY work that week, even a few hours of gig work or got paid for a side thing, you MUST report it. EDD will cross-reference with state wage records and if they catch unreported earnings it's an overpayment and potentially fraud. Report everything, EDD will calculate what you still owe you after deducting earnings - you don't lose all your benefits just because you earned something.
0 coins
Diego Mendoza
AuthorI did a few hours of odd jobs last week for cash, do I need to report that?
0 coins
Andre Lefebvre
Technically yes you should report any earnings. If it was truly cash under the table with no paper trail some people don't but that's a risk. The way the calculation works, you get to keep the first 25% of your weekly benefit amount before it starts reducing your payment, so earning a little doesn't wipe out your whole check.
0 coins
Zara Shah
This is accurate - it's called the partial benefit calculation. EDD reduces benefits by 75 cents for every dollar earned over 25% of your weekly benefit. So earning a little still pays off financially.

Can I just vent for a second? The EDD system is INFURIATING. I've been dealing with an adjudication hold for 6 weeks and every time I call I either get disconnected or sit on hold for 3 hours and then get disconnected anyway. The online messaging takes forever. I'm behind on rent. This system is designed to make people give up.

Authorugh I'm sorry that sounds awful. I hope my claim goes smoothly

I genuinely feel this. When I was in the same situation someone pointed me to Claimyr - claimyr.com - and it actually got me through to an EDD agent when nothing else worked. I know it sounds too good to be true but it was a lifesaver during my adjudication. Might be worth looking into given your situation.

NebulaNomad
I've heard about that service, I'm going to try it at this point because what do I have to lose. 6 weeks without payment is not sustainable.

Carmen Ruiz
The system really is designed poorly. But hang in there - adjudication does eventually resolve and usually backpay covers all the weeks you've been waiting.

one thing that confused me when i first filed - what does 'base period' actually mean. i kept seeing it everywhere
0 coins
Anastasia Popova
Base period is the 12-month period EDD uses to calculate your benefit amount - specifically it's the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. So if you file in mid-2025, your base period would be roughly January 2024 through December 2024. EDD adds up your wages in each quarter and uses the highest quarter to figure your weekly benefit amount.
0 coins
Zoe Alexopoulos
ok that makes more sense. so if I didn't work much during that period my benefits would be low?
0 coins
Anastasia Popova
Exactly. You also need to have earned at least $1,300 in your highest quarter, or at least $900 in your highest quarter AND total base period wages of 1.25 times that amount, to be eligible at all. If you don't meet that threshold EDD will look at an alternate base period using more recent wages.

Does anyone know if you can file for unemployment while doing freelance work part time? My situation is weird - I was laid off from my full time job but I do occasional graphic design gigs. Not enough to live on but I do earn something here and there
0 coins
Luca Ferrari
Yes you can file! This is exactly what partial unemployment benefits are for. You report your freelance earnings each week during your weekly cert, and EDD calculates a reduced benefit. As long as your weekly earnings from freelance don't exceed your weekly benefit amount, you'll still receive something. Many people collect partial benefits while freelancing.
0 coins
Jamal Anderson
Oh that's a huge relief. I was worried the freelance work would disqualify me entirely.
0 coins
Sean Flanagan
Just make sure to report every dollar accurately. The partial benefit calculation works in your favor for smaller amounts - don't avoid gigs thinking it'll hurt your unemployment check more than the gig pays.

something no one mentioned - if you're offered a job you have to accept it if it's suitable work. you can't just keep turning down jobs and collecting unemployment. 'suitable work' means work you're physically able to do that pays at least a certain percentage of your previous wage (it gets lower the longer you've been claiming). if EDD finds out you refused suitable work without good reason they can disqualify you
0 coins
Diego Mendoza
Authorwhat counts as a reason to turn down a job offer though?
0 coins
Mei Wong
Legitimate reasons: pay is significantly below your previous wage, the commute is unreasonable, the work is outside your skills and experience, unsafe working conditions, or it conflicts with your sincerely held religious beliefs. 'I just don't want that job' isn't enough on its own.
0 coins
Mateo Martinez
Worth noting that the definition of 'suitable work' gets broader the longer you're unemployed. After a few months EDD expects you to broaden your job search and be more flexible on pay.

Good luck! The first time is the learning curve - after that it becomes routine. And remember if anything goes sideways with your claim, the EDD phone line is 800-300-5616, early Tuesday or Wednesday mornings are less busy. Or check out services like Claimyr (claimyr.com) if you really can't get through - there's a demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works.
