Where do you file for unemployment in California EDD?
I got laid off from my warehouse job last Friday and honestly have no idea where to even start with this whole unemployment thing. My manager said I'd qualify but didn't give me any details. A coworker mentioned something about filing online but I don't know what website or what information I need to have ready. Do I go to an actual office somewhere? Is there a phone number I call to get the ball rolling? I've never done this before and I'm pretty anxious about getting something wrong and messing up my eligibility. Any help on where to actually FILE for unemployment in California would be huge right now.

Welcome to the club nobody wants to join! So here's the deal - in California you file your unemployment claim through the California EDD (Employment Development Department). The main place to do it is online at UI Online, which you access through the EDD website at edd.ca.gov. That's genuinely the fastest and most straightforward way to get your claim started. You'll create a myEDD account first, then go through the UI Online portal to submit your initial claim. The whole process takes maybe 30-45 minutes if you have your info ready.

AuthorThank you! So I don't need to go to a physical office or anything? I can just do everything from my phone or computer?

Exactly, you can do it all online. The EDD closed most walk-in services so online is really the standard now. Just make sure you have your Social Security number, work history for the past 18 months, and your last employer's info handy before you start.

yep UI Online is the way to go, took me like 20 min when i did it last year

To add to what was said - here's exactly what you'll need before you sit down to file your California unemployment claim: 1. Social Security number 2. Your complete work history for the last 18 months (employer names, addresses, phone numbers, dates worked) 3. Your last employer's EDD employer account number if you have it (usually on a pay stub) 4. Bank account info for direct deposit 5. Your citizenship/immigration status documentation if applicable Go to edd.ca.gov and click 'File a UI Claim.' You'll be directed to create a myEDD account. After you submit your initial claim, EDD will mail you a notice within about 10 days confirming your claim was received. Then you'll need to start certifying weekly to actually receive payments.

AuthorThis is incredibly helpful, I didn't know I needed 18 months of work history. I worked two different jobs in that time so I'll need to track down info for both of them.

The 18 month thing trips a lot of people up. Both jobs count toward your base period calculation which can actually increase your weekly benefit amount, so it's worth getting accurate info for both employers.

wait do they contact your old employer when you file?? im nervous about that part

Andre Dupont
Yes EDD does notify your former employer after you file. The employer has the chance to respond if they want to contest your claim - like if they believe you quit voluntarily or were fired for misconduct. If that happens your claim might go into adjudication. But if you were laid off it's very unlikely to be an issue.

Ok so this is REALLY important and nobody talks about it enough - filing the initial claim is just step one. Once you file you are NOT automatically getting money. After EDD processes your claim (takes 3-4 weeks usually) you have to certify EVERY TWO WEEKS through UI Online or by phone using EDD Tele-Cert. If you miss a certification you don't get paid for that period. I learned this the hard way and lost like two weeks of benefits because nobody told me.
0 coins
Yuki Ito
AuthorOh wow I had no idea about the certification part. So it's not just a one-time filing thing?
0 coins
Mei Lin
Nope, not at all. Every two weeks you answer questions about whether you worked, how much you earned if any, and whether you were able and available for work. It's not hard but you absolutely cannot skip it.

also you have to keep a record of your job search activities!! in california you need to look for work and document it even while collecting ui

^^^ good point. Three job search activities per week minimum in California. Keep a log with dates, employer names, contact info, and what type of contact you made. EDD can audit this.

I was in the exact same spot as you about 5 months ago - never filed for unemployment before, had no idea what I was doing. Honestly the online filing at edd.ca.gov is not that bad once you get into it. The part that got me frustrated was AFTER I filed when I needed to actually talk to someone at EDD because my claim got stuck. Calling EDD is basically impossible - I spent three days trying and either got busy signals or got disconnected after waiting an hour. Somebody on a different forum mentioned a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to an actual EDD agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that shows how it works. It basically navigates the phone system and holds your place in line so you don't have to sit there redialing for hours. I was skeptical but it genuinely worked for me - got connected to an agent in under an hour when I hadn't been able to reach anyone in days. Just mentioning it in case you run into phone issues down the road.

Can confirm Claimyr works - used it when my adjudication was dragging on forever and needed to know what was happening with my claim. Got through to someone and they were able to tell me exactly what the hold up was.

Check their site at claimyr.com for details, but from my experience it was worth every bit of it to not spend another full day redialing EDD.

Quick tip - file as soon as possible!! There's something called a waiting week in California where the first week of your claim you're eligible but don't get paid. The sooner you file, the sooner that waiting week passes and the sooner your actual payments start. Every day you delay filing is potentially a day of benefits you'll never see. File today if you can!

AuthorFiling tonight then. Is the website available 24/7 or only during certain hours?

UI Online is generally available most hours but EDD does take it offline for maintenance sometimes, usually late night/early morning. Try to file during normal business hours if possible just to avoid any hiccups.

The site is usually fine evenings and weekends. EDD system maintenance is typically announced in advance on their site. Don't wait on my account - file whenever you're ready!

Something worth knowing about California EDD eligibility before you file - to qualify you generally need to have: - Lost your job through no fault of your own (layoff qualifies, voluntary quit usually doesn't) - Earned enough wages in your base period (the 12 months before your claim, roughly) - Be able to work, available for work, and actively looking for work Since you were laid off from a warehouse job you almost certainly qualify. Your weekly benefit amount will be roughly 60-70% of your previous wages, up to the state maximum which is around $450/week right now. Not life-changing money but it helps while you're job hunting.

Yuki Ito
AuthorThat's lower than I expected honestly. I was making about $22/hour so I'm calculating... yeah that's gonna be tough. Better than nothing though.

Zoe Papanikolaou
Yeah the replacement rate in California is meaningful but it's definitely not your full salary. A lot of people supplement by picking up gig work - just make sure you report any earnings when you certify. You can earn some wages and still collect partial benefits.
0 coins
Jamal Wilson
wait you can still work while getting unemployment?? i thought it was all or nothing
0 coins
Zoe Papanikolaou
Partial benefits are a thing! If you earn less than your weekly benefit amount in a given week, EDD will pay you the difference. You MUST report all earnings though - failing to report is fraud and can result in disqualification plus having to repay everything.

Processing times really do vary. Straightforward layoff claims can go through in 2-3 weeks. It's when there's an issue - like EDD needs to verify your work history or your employer contests the claim - that things drag out into adjudication.
0 coins
Andre Dupont
One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet - after you file your initial claim online, watch your mail carefully over the next 1-2 weeks. EDD will send you a Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award (DE 429Z) which tells you your weekly benefit amount, your benefit year, and your claim balance. Also watch for any letters asking for additional information or requesting a phone interview - these are time-sensitive and if you miss the deadline it can affect your claim. Don't treat EDD mail as junk even if the envelope looks generic.
0 coins
Yuki Ito
AuthorGood call, I usually toss mail without really looking at it. I'll be more careful.

Also set up your myEDD account to get email notifications when EDD sends you messages online. Some communications go through the online portal rather than physical mail now.
0 coins
Andre Dupont
Yes that's a great point - check BOTH your myEDD inbox AND your physical mailbox regularly. Missing a notice because it went to one and you only checked the other is a genuinely common problem.

For what it's worth I filed mine on a Tuesday morning and the whole UI Online form was really intuitive. Took me about 35 minutes including gathering my old employer's address from LinkedIn. The hardest part was remembering my exact start and end dates for jobs from like 2 years ago - approximate is probably fine but I tried to be as accurate as possible.
0 coins
Yuki Ito
AuthorDid you have to enter exact dates or can you say like 'around March 2023'?
0 coins
Amara Nnamani
The form has specific date fields so you do need actual dates. I'd check old emails or pay stubs if you're fuzzy. Your W-2s also show what year you worked somewhere which at least narrows it down.

HR departments can also tell you your exact employment dates if you email them. They're required to keep that info and it's your information to access.

ok dumb question but do you have to live in california to file with california edd or is it based on where you worked?? asking for a friend
0 coins
Carmen Lopez
Not a dumb question! It's based on where you WORKED, not where you live. If you worked in California you file with California EDD regardless of where you live now. If you worked in another state you'd file with that state's unemployment agency.
0 coins
Jamal Wilson
oh that makes sense! my friend moved out of state but worked in ca until recently so they should file with edd then

Yep, EDD handles out-of-state claimants regularly. Just file at edd.ca.gov the same way, they'll process it.

i work in HR and just want to add - please be 100% honest on the application about your reason for separation. If you were laid off say laid off. If you were fired say fired. If you quit say quit. EDD verifies with your employer and the stories WILL be compared. Misrepresentation is fraud and can disqualify you from benefits plus require repayment. Being honest doesn't mean you won't get benefits - even some firings qualify depending on circumstances.

Yuki Ito
AuthorDefinitely planning to be honest. I was straight up laid off, they eliminated my whole shift due to slow orders.

That's textbook qualifying separation. You should have zero issues with eligibility. Good luck!

This is really good advice. The fraud investigations unit at EDD has gotten more aggressive and the penalties are serious. Not worth it to fudge anything.

also dont forget you can file by phone if online doesnt work for you. 1-800-300-5616 is the EDD number to file a new claim by phone. warning tho: hold times are brutal. like 2+ hours sometimes. UI Online is way faster if you can swing it.

Something nobody mentioned - California has a work search requirement that starts immediately. You need to document 3 job search activities every week you collect benefits. Activities can include: - Applying for jobs - Attending job fairs - Creating/updating profiles on job sites - Networking with people in your field - Taking a job skills workshop through America's Job Center (formerly CalJOBS) Keep a spreadsheet or notes app log with dates, employer/contact names, and what you did. EDD doesn't require you to submit this weekly but you can be asked to provide it at any time and if you can't produce it you can be disqualified.
0 coins
Yuki Ito
AuthorThree per week, got it. Is there a specific format EDD wants for the job search log?
0 coins
Liam Fitzgerald
No required format, just needs to include the basic info. EDD's website has a sample log template you can download if you want something structured. I just used a notes app personally.

Worth noting that CalJOBS is California's job search platform connected to EDD - creating a profile there counts as a job search activity and they have workshops and resources too. It's at caljobs.ca.gov

OP just to set expectations - even after you file and get approved there's usually a 3 week gap before you see any money. Week 1 is the unpaid waiting week, week 2 your first certification period starts, and payments typically post a few days after you certify. So plan for at least 3-4 weeks of no income. If you have any savings or can borrow from family it's worth doing just to bridge that gap.

Yuki Ito
AuthorThat's really useful to know for budgeting. I have a little saved up so hopefully that tides me over.

Good. Also look into whether your city or county has emergency rental assistance or food bank programs in the meantime. A lot of people don't know those resources exist while they're waiting on EDD.

Coming back to add - once you get into the system, if you ever need to actually TALK to someone at EDD about your claim, brace yourself. Their phone system is notoriously frustrating. I mentioned Claimyr earlier (claimyr.com) and the video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 is worth watching just to understand how it works. You basically let them navigate the hold queue for you and they call you back when an agent is ready. A lot of people in my situation with complex claims couldn't have resolved their issues without getting an actual human on the phone, and Claimyr was the only way to make that happen without burning through a full day redialing.
0 coins
Amara Nnamani
Yeah I'll second this - had to use it when my claim went into adjudication and I needed answers. The online portal just says 'pending' forever with no explanation and the only way to get actual info is speaking to an agent.
0 coins
Jamal Wilson
does it work for any edd issue or just specific ones

GalacticGuru
It's just a way to reach an EDD agent by phone - once you're connected you can ask about anything. Adjudication status, payment issues, updating your info, whatever you need.

For anyone reading this who just got laid off and is overwhelmed - here's the simplified version: 1. Go to edd.ca.gov RIGHT NOW and file 2. Write down your confirmation number 3. Watch mail AND myEDD inbox for notices 4. Start your job search log TODAY (3 activities per week) 5. Set a calendar reminder to certify every 2 weeks 6. Don't panic if there's a delay - most claims resolve 7. If you need to talk to someone and can't get through on the phone, Claimyr.com can help you reach an EDD agent That's it. The system is confusing but manageable once you know the steps.

random question but related - if you worked like 3 months at one job then 8 months at another job and then got laid off from the second one, do both jobs count for your unemployment benefit calculation?
0 coins
Zoe Papanikolaou
Yes! EDD uses something called the base period to calculate your benefit amount - it's roughly the 12 months before you file. Wages from both employers during that time count. More wages generally means a higher weekly benefit amount.
0 coins
Dmitry Ivanov
oh sweet so it's not just based on the last job
0 coins
Zoe Papanikolaou
Correct. EDD looks at your total base period earnings across all employers in California. If your second employer paid more that matters more in the calculation but all the wages factor in.

PSA for anyone who was told they 'don't qualify' for unemployment by their employer - DO NOT just take their word for it. Employers sometimes say this to discourage claims because it affects their tax rates. ALWAYS file and let EDD make the eligibility determination. EDD makes the call, not your ex-boss.

last thing i want to add - if for some reason your claim does get denied (hopefully it won't) you have the right to APPEAL within 30 days of the denial notice. Don't just accept a denial. The appeal process through the CUIAB (California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board) gives you a real hearing and a lot of denials get reversed on appeal. Just wanted to throw that out there since OP is new to this.
0 coins
Yuki Ito
AuthorHopefully I won't need that info but it's good to have. 30 days from the denial date, noted.
0 coins
Sofia Morales
Exactly - and the 30 days is from the date on the notice, NOT the date you receive it. So open EDD mail immediately.

Andre Dupont
Also worth knowing: even if you miss the 30 day window, you can sometimes still appeal if you can show good cause for the late appeal. Don't give up if you miss the deadline without trying.
