How do I check my unemployment status online with California EDD?
Okay so I filed my claim about two weeks ago and I'm genuinely confused about how to check my unemployment status online. I set up my myEDD account when I first filed but now when I log in I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking at. There's a bunch of different sections and I don't know which one actually tells me where my claim stands. Is it the UI Online portal specifically? I see something that says 'claim status' but it just shows 'pending' and nothing else. Does that mean it's still being processed or is there something wrong? I also got a letter saying something about 'eligibility issues' but there's no explanation of what the issue actually is. I work in restaurant management and got laid off when the location I was at permanently closed, so I'm not sure why there would be eligibility issues at all. I've been trying to call EDD to ask someone directly but I can't get through no matter what time I call. Just want to understand what I'm looking at in my account and whether 'pending' is normal at this point.

So the first thing to understand is that UI Online and myEDD are actually two connected systems. You log in through myEDD at myedd.edd.ca.gov but then you click into UI Online to actually manage your claim. Once you're inside UI Online, look for the 'Claim Summary' section on your dashboard - that's where you'll see the most detailed breakdown of your claim status. 'Pending' just means your claim hasn't been fully processed yet which is totally normal in the first couple weeks. The eligibility issues letter is more concerning though - that usually means your claim got flagged for adjudication which is a separate review process. Did the letter give you any code numbers or reference a specific issue type?

AuthorIt had something that said 'issue type: wages' but that's all. I reported my wages accurately when I filed so I genuinely don't understand why that would be flagged.

wages issue usually means they couldn't verify your earnings with your employer yet, super common with restaurants especially if the business closed, the employer records might be incomplete

Yeah that makes sense - when a business closes permanently sometimes the wage records don't get submitted to EDD properly before closure. This should resolve itself once EDD verifies with the state wage database but it can take a few extra weeks.

To directly answer your question about checking status - inside UI Online go to the top navigation and click 'My UI' then look at 'Claim Summary.' You'll see fields for: Claim Type, Claim Balance, Weekly Benefit Amount, Claim Start and End Date, and Current Status. If any of these show dashes or zeros that can indicate your claim hasn't fully processed. Also check under 'Messages' in your inbox because EDD often sends notices there before they arrive by mail and those messages sometimes explain the eligibility issue in more detail than the letter does.

AuthorOh wow I didn't even know there was a messages section in there! Going to check that right now.

same, i found out about my adjudication from the messages inbox like a week before i got the paper letter lol

Yep the inbox is weirdly underutilized by claimants. EDD puts important notices in there. Also check 'Payment Activity' to see if any payments have been issued or if there's a hold on everything.

honestly been there with the endless calling thing. I spent like 3 weeks trying to get someone on the phone about my own status question and finally someone in another forum mentioned Claimyr. It's a service at claimyr.com that basically navigates the EDD phone queue for you and gets you connected to an actual agent without you having to sit on hold forever. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - was skeptical at first but it genuinely got me talking to someone at EDD within the same day I signed up. For something like a wages eligibility issue you really do need to talk to an agent directly because those can't always be resolved just through the online portal.

AuthorWait this actually exists? I've been calling literally every single day and can't get through. Going to look into this.

I used claimyr too for a different issue, it worked. Just make sure you know what questions you want to ask before the agent picks up because they don't give you a ton of time

is it legit though? seems weird to have a service just for calling edd

Yeah I was skeptical too but it's real. The EDD phone system is genuinely broken for a lot of people so services like this fill a gap. The video demo on their YouTube explains the whole thing pretty clearly.

PENDING FOR TWO WEEKS IS NOTHING. I was pending for 8 weeks before anything changed on my account. The system is an absolute disaster. They flagged my claim for no reason I could figure out and every time I tried to call I got the 'we cannot take your call' recording and it just disconnected me. Nobody should have to fight this hard just to see what's happening with their own money.

Author8 weeks is terrifying to hear honestly. Did it eventually get resolved?

yeah finally but only after I sent a certified letter to my local EDD office AND emailed my state assembly representative. the squeaky wheel thing is real with edd

Ravi Kapoor
Contacting your assembly rep actually works faster than most people realize. EDD has constituent service contacts specifically for legislator inquiries and those tend to get faster responses than regular claimant calls.

wait im confused, is adjudication the same as being disqualified? my roommate told me if i get an adjudication notice it means i lost my benefits but that doesnt sound right to me
0 coins
Oliver Weber
No they're definitely not the same thing. Adjudication just means your claim is under review - it's a neutral process where EDD is investigating eligibility before making a decision. You haven't been approved OR denied yet. Disqualification is the actual negative outcome that would come AFTER adjudication if EDD decided you weren't eligible. Being in adjudication is totally normal and doesn't mean you're going to be denied.

oh thank god, i've been panicking for like 5 days thinking i already lost everything

yeah this is a super common misconception, adjudication just means review, not rejection

Something else worth knowing about checking your status - if your claim shows a weekly benefit amount but still says pending overall, that actually means EDD has calculated your payment amount already which is a good sign they've processed at least the wage verification part. The pending at that point is more likely related to the eligibility determination rather than a fundamental problem with your claim.
0 coins
Amina Toure
AuthorMine actually does show a weekly benefit amount so maybe that's a good sign like you said
0 coins
FireflyDreams
Yeah that's genuinely positive - if the wages issue was unresolvable they typically wouldn't even calculate a benefit amount. Sounds like your claim is moving through the process.

Natasha Kuznetsova
Agreed. WBA showing up means the monetary eligibility part cleared. The hold is probably just on the non-monetary side while they sort out the wages discrepancy.

i checked my status like 4 times a day when my claim was pending lol not judging at all. one thing i noticed is that status updates usually happen overnight not during business hours so checking in the morning is actually more useful than checking throughout the day

For the wages eligibility issue specifically - there's actually a form you can proactively submit called the DE 1101I which is the unemployment insurance application for wages. But more importantly, EDD may send you a questionnaire asking you to verify your employment and wages. Watch your myEDD inbox and also your physical mailbox carefully because missing that questionnaire and the response deadline can extend your adjudication significantly or result in a denial by default.
0 coins
Amina Toure
AuthorOkay I definitely did not know about this questionnaire possibility. How long do I typically have to respond if they send one?
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
Usually 10 days from the date on the notice, not from when you receive it, so respond as fast as possible. You can often respond through UI Online in the 'Respond to EDD' section or by fax, and sometimes by mail though mail is the slowest.

Isabella Ferreira
10 days is not enough time when EDD mail takes forever to arrive, the date on the letter vs when it shows up can already eat 4-5 days

One more thing on the actually talking to someone front - I know I mentioned Claimyr earlier but I want to add that when I finally got through to an EDD agent using it, the agent was actually able to pull up my claim in real time and tell me exactly what stage of adjudication I was in and what the specific hold was. That was way more useful than anything I could see in UI Online. The online portal gives you a status but not the detail behind it. For a wages issue especially, hearing directly from an agent what they're actually looking at can make a big difference in knowing what to do next.
0 coins
Amina Toure
AuthorYeah the more I think about it the more I realize I need to actually talk to someone. The online status just isn't giving me enough information to know what's happening.
0 coins
Malik Thompson
agreed, UI Online is useful but it's basically just a dashboard, the real info is in the agent's system

Freya Nielsen
how long did it take when you used claimyr? like same day or next day?
0 coins
Emma Anderson
For me it was same day, got a callback within a few hours. The claimyr.com site has more details on how it works and the YouTube demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows the whole process

Something nobody mentioned yet - you should be filing your weekly certifications even while your claim is in adjudication pending status. A lot of people don't realize this and then if their claim does get approved they lose out on weeks of benefits they should have been paid for. Log into UI Online and if there's a 'File Weekly Certification' option available, use it every week no matter what your claim status shows.
0 coins
Amina Toure
AuthorOh no - I haven't been doing this because I assumed I should wait until the pending resolved. Is it too late to file the weeks I missed?
0 coins
Chloe Harris
You can sometimes file retroactive certifications but there's a limited window - contact EDD as soon as possible to ask about backdating. For future weeks though start filing immediately, don't wait for the pending to clear.
0 coins
Oliver Weber
This is really important advice. Missing weekly certifications during adjudication is one of the most common and costly mistakes claimants make. Even if EDD isn't paying out yet, the certifications establish your eligibility for each week.
0 coins
Javier Morales
ugh the weekly certification thing is so confusing when your claim is in limbo. I asked an EDD rep once and she said 'file if the option is available' which is not super helpful because sometimes the option disappears during adjudication and then comes back
0 coins
FireflyDreams
Yeah the system behavior during adjudication is inconsistent. If the certification button greyed out or disappeared, that's actually EDD's system putting a hold on it - keep checking back weekly because it can reappear
0 coins
Javier Morales
yeah mine disappeared for like 3 weeks then came back and I could suddenly file all the missed weeks at once which was a relief

does anyone know if the status updates faster if you call in vs waiting for the online portal to update? like does calling actually trigger anything or is it just informational
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
Calling is purely informational - it doesn't trigger any processing changes. However an agent CAN manually escalate or add notes to a claim which might indirectly speed things up. More importantly calling is useful because agents can sometimes identify if there's a simple fix needed on your end like a missing document.
0 coins
Isabella Ferreira
okay that makes sense, so it's worth calling not to speed it up but to find out if there's something specific you need to do
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
Exactly. And if the agent tells you everything looks fine on their end and it just needs more processing time, at least you know that and can stop worrying about needing to take action.

random tip - if you're trying to call EDD the absolute best window I found was 8:01am on Tuesday or Wednesday. Monday is packed because of weekend accumulation and Friday everyone's trying before the weekend. Tuesdays and Wednesdays mid-morning seem less slammed but even then it's a crapshoot honestly

Omar Mahmoud
I've heard this too, the 8am Tuesday thing. Never fully confirmed it for myself because I still couldn't get through even then lol

yeah it's not guaranteed, more like slightly better odds. The EDD phone system is just fundamentally overwhelmed

For people dealing with wages eligibility issues specifically - my experience was that EDD was trying to cross-reference my reported wages against what my employer reported to the state Employment Development Department. When a business closes suddenly those employer records can be delayed or incomplete. What actually resolved mine was getting a letter from my former employer (even an email from an owner counts) confirming my employment dates and wages, and uploading it through the 'Upload Documents' section in UI Online. Didn't even need to call.
0 coins
Amina Toure
AuthorThis is incredibly useful - my restaurant location closed so getting something from the former manager might actually be possible. Did you upload it as a general document or is there a specific category to select?
0 coins
NeonNinja
There should be a document type selection when you upload - I think I used 'Proof of Employment' or something similar. The description field is important, write clearly what the document is and what issue it's addressing.

This is solid advice. Proactively providing wage verification documentation can shortcut the adjudication timeline significantly rather than waiting for EDD to gather it themselves.

just want to say this thread is genuinely helpful, I've been lurking because I'm dealing with almost the same exact situation and learned more here than from EDD's own website which tells you basically nothing useful

AuthorSame honestly - I came in completely lost and now I actually have a game plan. Going to check my UI Online messages tonight, start filing weekly certs, and look into reaching an agent through claimyr if I can't get through by phone this week.

One last thing I want to flag because it sounds like you're in good shape but people should know - if your adjudication results in a disqualification notice you have 30 days from the date on the notice to file an appeal. Don't let that window pass even if you think you can resolve it by calling. You can appeal AND try to resolve it through normal contact at the same time, and the appeal protects your rights if the phone resolution doesn't work out.
0 coins
Amina Toure
AuthorReally good to know the appeal window is 30 days. Bookmarking this in case it comes to that.
0 coins
Freya Nielsen
wait can you appeal something if you're not sure whether you should? like if you get a disqualification but don't understand why is it better to appeal first and ask questions later
0 coins
Ravi Kapoor
Yes, appeal first, ask questions later. Filing an appeal preserves your rights and gives you more time to figure out what happened. You can always withdraw an appeal if you resolve the issue, but you can't file one after the 30 day window has passed.
0 coins
Oliver Weber
This is critical advice. The 30 day appeal deadline is one of the hardest cutoffs EDD enforces. Missing it typically means losing your right to contest the decision entirely.

just went through this whole process, the wages adjudication thing. took about 5 weeks total from when i first saw the eligibility issue flag to when my payments actually showed up. during that time I could see on UI Online that my claim status changed from 'pending' to 'adjudication in progress' to 'determination issued' before payments released. so those status transitions are worth watching for as milestones
0 coins
Amina Toure
AuthorThis is really helpful as a roadmap of what to expect. Did you end up needing to submit any documents or do anything on your end or did it resolve on its own?
0 coins
Anastasia Popov
Mine resolved without me doing anything extra but I also had a pretty clean wage history. Given that your employer closed permanently I'd probably be proactive about the document upload thing another commenter mentioned.
0 coins
Javier Morales
5 weeks sounds terrible but honestly that's in the reasonable range for wages adjudication. I've seen people wait 12+ weeks when there were complications
0 coins
Sean Murphy
I work in HR (not for EDD, just in general) and when companies close permanently they're supposed to submit final wage reports to EDD but it frequently falls through the cracks during chaotic closures. If the former location owner or a payroll contact is reachable that document upload approach is genuinely your fastest path. Former employers who closed usually have no reason not to provide a simple employment verification since there's no ongoing business relationship to complicate things.
0 coins
Amina Toure
AuthorI actually have my former manager's contact info still. Going to reach out today and ask for something in writing. Really hadn't thought about this angle until this thread.
0 coins
NeonNinja
Yes and if you can get anything with official letterhead or even a pay stub from your last few pay periods that can serve as supplemental documentation alongside an employer letter.
0 coins
Sean Murphy
Exactly - the more paper documentation the better. EDD adjudicators reviewing wages issues respond well to clear primary source documents rather than just claimant assertions.

Checking back in on this thread - OP it sounds like you've got a solid plan now. Just to recap what seems most actionable: check UI Online messages section tonight, start or continue weekly certifications immediately, try to get employer documentation given the closure situation, and if you haven't been able to get through to EDD by phone after another few days of trying do consider claimyr.com as a real option to actually speak with an agent. The claimyr video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 walks through the whole thing. Wages adjudication with a closed employer is genuinely the kind of situation where an agent conversation can save you weeks of uncertainty.
