EDD phone support keeps hanging up - is there a better number to call?
I am getting so frustrated with this whole process! I've been trying to reach someone at EDD for 3 days now about a question on my certification dates. I finally got through TWICE today, waited on hold for over 40 minutes each time, and then when someone finally picked up, they hung up on me! No explanation, just click and dial tone. Is there a specific number I should be calling for certification issues? I tried the main UI number (1-800-300-5616) but clearly that's not working. Does anyone know if there's a different department or option I should be selecting? My benefits are about to run out and I need to speak to someone ASAP before I miss my next certification window.

•It's maddening! Did you ever get through to anyone? I'm starting to think I should just drive to an office in person, but I don't even know if they're taking walk-ins anymore.

The 1-800-300-5616 is the correct number, but you need to know the trick to navigating the system. Don't press 1 for English right away - wait until all language options are stated. Then press 1, followed by 2, then 4. This route typically connects you to tier 2 specialists who can actually help with certification issues. Also, call precisely at 8:01 AM when they open or between 11:30-12:30 when staff are rotating for lunch breaks.

•Thank you for this detailed advice! I'll try that specific sequence tomorrow morning right at 8:01. Do you think it matters which day of the week I call? I've been trying on Mondays thinking that's when they'd be most staffed.

•Mondays and Tuesdays are actually their busiest days. Try Wednesday or Thursday instead. Fridays they start winding down for the weekend, so those aren't great either. And one more tip - if you're asked if you want to be called back instead of waiting on hold, ALWAYS decline. The callback system rarely works properly.

Pro tip: NEVER mention that you have a "quick question" when they finally answer. I made that mistake and they transferred me to the general queue where I got hung up on. They have some kind of internal policy to redirect simple questions away from claims specialists. Always say you have a "complex claim issue regarding your certification and eligibility status"- even if your question is actually simple.

•Oh wow, I definitely made that mistake! I said I just had a quick question about my certification date. That explains the transfer and hang up. Thank you for this insider knowledge!

•You are 100% right. I'm convinced they intentionally make it difficult to discourage people from getting their benefits. I documented my experience trying to reach them last month - called 47 times in one day, got through 3 times, disconnected twice, and the third time the rep told me they couldn't help and I needed to call a different department... which had already closed for the day! The system is broken by design.

If you're still struggling after trying the tips mentioned, I'd recommend using Claimyr. It's a service that basically calls EDD for you and connects you when they get through to a representative. Saved me HOURS of frustration when I had issues with my disqualification notice. They have a demo video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. The website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out. After trying for 2 weeks on my own, I got connected to an EDD specialist within 25 minutes using their service.

•That sounds promising! Has anyone else used this service? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point, especially if it means not having to redial hundreds of times.

•I used it last month when my certifications weren't processing. Worked really well. Basically you put in your phone number on their site, then they call EDD with their system that gets through the busy signals, and when they reach an agent, they connect you. I was skeptical but it got me through when I couldn't do it myself after days of trying.

Here's what worked for me last week when I had a similar issue with getting hung up on: 1. Call the alternate UI number: 833-978-2511 2. Press # immediately when the recording starts 3. Then press 1, 2, and then 1 again 4. Call at exactly 8:12am (not 8:00 - everyone calls then and the system gets overloaded) I've found the representatives at this number are generally more helpful for certification issues specifically. The regular number is better for claim filing or appeals, but this one seems to work better for certification problems.

•I didn't even know about this alternate number! I'll definitely try both approaches. So helpful to have specific number sequences to press - the menu system is so confusing and seems designed to loop you in circles.

I want to add something important regarding your certification concerns. If you're worried about missing the window, you can still certify online even if you have questions. The system will allow you to add comments in the certification process. Complete your certification on time regardless, then resolve your questions with an agent afterward. This prevents any gap in your claim that could cause bigger problems. You can always have adjustments made retroactively if needed.

•That's extremely helpful advice! I was worried about certifying incorrectly, but you're right - better to certify and fix it later than miss the window entirely. I'll make sure to complete it online and just document my concerns in the comments section. Thank you!
