EDD phone number to certify for benefits - can't get through after 6 days straight
I've been trying to call the EDD phone number to certify for benefits for almost a week now. My certification was supposed to be done 3 days ago but I keep getting the 'too busy' message. I've tried both 800-300-5616 and 833-978-0953 but they seem to go to the same place. Has anyone successfully reached someone to help with benefit certification over the phone? I'm starting to panic because I need to certify to keep getting paid.

The certification phone line is the same as the main unemployment line, so you're dealing with the same impossible call volume. I spent 4 hours yesterday just trying to get through for my certification issue.

•4 hours?! I can't afford to spend that much time every day. There has to be a better way.

•Unfortunately that's pretty normal. I've had days where I called 80+ times just to get the busy signal.

Try calling right at 8am when they open. Set your alarm for 7:55am and start dialing at 7:58am. Sometimes you can slip in before the flood of calls hits.

•I actually tried that Tuesday morning - called at 7:57am and still got busy signals for 2 hours straight.

•Ugh, it's getting worse. Even the early morning trick isn't working reliably anymore.

Honestly, after weeks of this nonsense, I used Claimyr and it was the best $20 I ever spent. Got connected to an agent in 15 minutes instead of wasting entire days redialing.

•What's Claimyr? Is that some kind of calling service?

Fatima Al-Mazrouei
•Yeah, it's at claimyr.com - they basically call for you and patch you through when they get an agent. Way better than doing it manually.

•I was skeptical about paying for that but honestly after 3 weeks of failed attempts, it might be worth it.

The menu pattern is: call the number, press 1 for English, wait about 70 seconds, then press 1-1-***. But honestly, even knowing the shortcut doesn't help much when they're constantly busy.

CosmicCadet
•I've been doing 1-1-*** but maybe I'm not waiting long enough before the second 1? How long do you wait after the first 1?

NebulaKnight
•You have to wait for the full menu to cycle once. If you press too early it kicks you back to the beginning.

Don't waste your time calling between 12pm and 1:30pm. The entire call center goes to lunch and literally nobody answers during that time.

Dmitry Popov
•Wait, seriously? The WHOLE call center takes lunch at the same time? That's insane!

Sofia Ramirez
•Yep, learned that the hard way after spending my lunch breaks for a week calling during that dead zone.

I finally got through last Thursday afternoon around 2:30pm. Took me 47 attempts that day but I got my certification issue resolved. Wednesday and Thursday afternoons seem to be slightly better.

•47 attempts in one day?! How do you even keep track? And did you have to wait on hold after getting through?

Ava Rodriguez
•Yeah, I kept a tally on my notepad. Once I got through the menu I was on hold for about 90 minutes, but at least the call didn't drop.

Pro tip: don't call on Monday mornings or Friday afternoons. Mondays are absolutely impossible and Friday after 3pm they basically stop taking new calls.

•This is so helpful! I was wondering why Monday was always worse than other days.

•Good to know about Fridays too. I was planning to try tomorrow afternoon but maybe I'll wait until next week.

The 833 number and 800 number are literally the same line, don't let anyone tell you they're different. I tested this by calling both numbers back-to-back and got the exact same menu and hold music.

•Thank you for testing that! I was wondering if switching between numbers would help but sounds like it's pointless.

•I've been alternating between them thinking it might help. Guess I can stick to just one number now.

I hate to say it but sometimes you have to treat calling EDD like a part-time job. I blocked out Tuesday and Wednesday morning last week and finally got through on Wednesday around 11am.

•I work full-time so I can't dedicate entire days to calling. This is such a broken system.

•Same here - I have to call during my breaks and lunch, which makes it almost impossible to get through.

Just a heads up - even if you get on hold, there's about a 30-40% chance the call will drop after an hour or two. Happened to me 3 times last week.

CosmicCadet
•Are you kidding me?! So even if I get past the busy signals I might waste 2 hours on hold for nothing?

Paolo Conti
•Unfortunately yes. It's a known issue with their phone system that they haven't fixed.

I used to spend 6-8 hours a day calling until my coworker told me about Claimyr. Now I just submit a callback request and they call me back when an agent is ready. Saved my sanity.

CosmicCadet
•How long did it take for them to call you back? And did you have any issues with the certification process?
0 coins
Amina Sow
•About 25 minutes for the callback, and the agent handled my certification issue just like they would if I called directly. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works.

The certification deadline stress is real. I missed my window once because I couldn't get through and had to wait 2 weeks for my next payment. Don't let that happen to you.

CosmicCadet
•That's exactly what I'm worried about! How did you eventually get it sorted out?

•I ended up using one of those calling services after that disaster. Wish I had done it sooner instead of wasting weeks.

Some people swear by calling from different phones or using *67 to block caller ID, but I've never seen any proof that actually works. The issue is just call volume, not phone screening.

•I tried the *67 trick and didn't notice any difference. Pretty sure it's just superstition.

•Yeah I heard about that too but it seems like wishful thinking. The problem is just too many people calling.

If you're going to keep trying manually, at least use speaker phone and do other things while you redial. Don't just sit there staring at your phone for hours.

•Good point. I've been glued to my phone all week like it's going to make a difference.

•I set up a workspace with my laptop so I could work while redialing. Made the time slightly less miserable.

The most frustrating part is that certification should be a simple online process but their website is always broken when you actually need it.

CosmicCadet
•YES! The UI Benefit site has been down every time I've tried to certify online. That's why I'm stuck trying to call.

Isabella Santos
•Same issue here. The site works fine until you actually need to do something important, then it's 'temporarily unavailable'.

For what it's worth, I had better luck calling mid-week (Tuesday-Thursday) around 2-3pm. Avoid Monday mornings and Friday afternoons at all costs.

•I'll try Wednesday at 2pm tomorrow. Fingers crossed I can finally get this certification done.

•Wednesday afternoons have been my sweet spot too. Still takes forever but slightly more likely to get through.

Just remember that EDD is open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm Pacific. Don't waste time calling outside those hours like I did my first week.

•I made that mistake too! Called at 6am thinking I'd beat the rush. Felt pretty dumb when I got the closed message.

•At least you didn't try calling on Saturday like I did. Sometimes desperation makes you do silly things.

The reality is this: you can spend days or weeks trying to get through manually, or you can use a service like Claimyr and get connected in under an hour. I wish I'd made that choice sooner.

CosmicCadet
•I think I'm convinced. If I can't get through by tomorrow I'm going to try the Claimyr thing. Thanks everyone for all the advice!

•Smart choice. I wasted 3 weeks being stubborn about paying for help. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses.

One last tip: if you do get through and get disconnected, try calling back immediately. Sometimes the system will recognize your number and put you back in queue faster.

•Interesting! I never heard that before. Hopefully I won't need to test it but good to know.

•I'm not sure that actually works but it can't hurt to try. The whole system is so unpredictable anyway.

Update us when you finally get through! This thread has been super helpful for all of us dealing with the same certification nightmare.

•Definitely will! Hopefully I'll have good news to share soon. Thanks again everyone - this has been way more helpful than any EDD FAQ page.
