EDD payment timing after midnight certification - will federal holiday delay deposit?
Just certified for my weekly UI benefits right after midnight (like 12:15am) and saw my status change from pending to paid pretty quickly. In the past (pre-pandemic), I remember my payments would usually hit my account after 10pm that same night. Does anyone know if that's still how the system works? Also concerned because tomorrow is a federal holiday - will that delay when the money hits my account? Really need this payment ASAP as I've got rent due and I'm already behind on utilities. Anyone certified recently who can share their timeline?

The EDD payment timeline has changed a bit since COVID. Now after certification, it typically takes 24-48 hours for the money to appear in your account. And yes, the federal holiday will likely add another day to that timeline. So I'd expect the payment Wednesday or Thursday at the earliest. The "paid" status just means it's been approved, not that the money transfer has been initiated yet.

•Crap, that's not what I wanted to hear but thanks for the info. My landlord is already breathing down my neck. This is my first time on unemployment in years and everything seems different now.

i get mine usually by 11pm same day when i certify early morning!! dunno why that other person said 24-48 hrs? maybe depends on ur bank?

•It TOTALLY depends on your payment method and bank! If you're using the Money Network card, funds typically appear within 24 hours of showing 'paid' status. Direct deposit can vary widely - some banks process faster than others. I'm with Chase and it takes 2 full business days after the 'paid' status shows up. And yes, federal holidays absolutely delay everything by at least one business day.

Same boat! Just certified at 1am and it switched to paid by 6am. First time claiming benefits since 2019 and forgot how stressful the waiting game is. Hope we both get paid tonight but the holiday probably means it'll be delayed. UGH.

•For real! The waiting is the worst part, especially when bills are due. Let me know if yours comes through tonight?

The most reliable timeline information I've found: For Money Network cards, funds typically appear 24-48 hours after status changes to paid. For direct deposit, it's typically 48-72 hours PLUS any holidays or weekends. So with tomorrow being a federal holiday, you're looking at Wednesday or Thursday most likely. Also, just so you know for next time - certifying Sunday morning versus right after midnight makes no difference in payment speed. The EDD processes all Sunday certifications in batches regardless of exact certification time.

•That's helpful to know about the Sunday certification timing - no need for me to stay up until midnight anymore! Thanks for the detailed breakdown.

i HAD THE SAME PROBLEM last month when i certified over july 4th weekend!!! took 5 DAYS to get my $$$ because of stupid holiday. EDD system is such trash they dont care if we cant pay rent

•While the holiday delays are frustrating, that's actually a banking system issue, not specifically an EDD problem. All ACH transfers are affected by federal banking holidays, regardless of whether they're unemployment benefits, paychecks, or other electronic transfers.

If you're having trouble reaching EDD to ask about your payment timeline or need to check if there are any issues with your claim, you might want to try Claimyr. I was in a similar situation last month and couldn't get through on the regular line. Claimyr connected me to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km and their website is claimyr.com. Saved me so much frustration when I really needed to get payment info.

•Thanks for the suggestion. If I don't see the payment by Wednesday I might need to give that a try. At this point I just need to know when to expect the money so I can tell my landlord.

UPDATE FOR EVERYONE: I just checked the EDD website and there's a banner notice that states: "Due to the federal holiday, payments approved today may experience a 24-hour delay in processing. We appreciate your patience." So there's your official answer.

•Thanks for checking! Wish they would send text alerts for this kind of info instead of making us hunt for it.

For anyone following this thread: I recommend setting up direct deposit if you haven't already. While it doesn't eliminate holiday delays, it's generally faster than the Money Network card. To set it up, log into UI Online, go to "Profile" then "Payment Preference" and have your bank account info ready. Much more reliable than waiting for mail or dealing with card issues.

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know my payment finally hit my account this morning (Wednesday). So that was about 48 hours after certification with the holiday delay. Thanks for all the helpful info everyone!

Glad to hear you got your payment! This thread was super helpful for me too as I'm waiting on my certification from Sunday. The EDD system can be so confusing, especially when you're stressed about bills. It's great when community members share their actual experiences and timelines - way more reliable than trying to navigate the EDD website or sitting on hold for hours. Bookmarking this for future reference!

•Totally agree! I'm new to this whole unemployment process and was really stressing about the timing, especially with the holiday. Reading everyone's actual experiences here was way more helpful than anything I could find on the official EDD site. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines - it really helped set expectations. Hope your payment comes through smoothly too!

This thread is exactly what I needed to find! I certified yesterday morning and have been refreshing my account every hour like a maniac. It's my second time on unemployment (first was back in 2018) and I forgot how nerve-wracking the waiting period is, especially when you're cutting it close with bills. Really appreciate everyone sharing their real timelines instead of the vague "allow 2-3 business days" that EDD gives you. The federal holiday info was particularly helpful - I had no idea that would add extra delay. Fingers crossed mine hits tomorrow or Friday!

•I totally feel you on the refreshing every hour thing! I did the same when I was waiting for my first payment. The waiting is honestly the worst part, especially when you're stressed about money. Based on what everyone shared here, it sounds like you should definitely see it by Friday at the latest. The good news is once you get into the rhythm of the certification cycle, you'll have a better sense of the timing. Hang in there - the payment will come through!

Just wanted to share my recent experience for anyone still following this thread. I certified this past Sunday at around 11am and my status changed to "paid" within a few hours. Since there were no holidays this week, my direct deposit hit Tuesday night around 10:30pm - so about 60 hours total from certification to money in account. For those asking about Bank of America specifically, they seem to process EDD deposits pretty quickly compared to some other banks I've used. One tip that helped me manage the stress: I set up account alerts so I get a text when any deposit hits, rather than constantly checking my balance. Makes the whole process way less anxiety-inducing!
