EDD payment not on card day after certifying - has the timeline changed since 2021?
Just got laid off from my warehouse job last month and filed for unemployment. This is my first time dealing with EDD since the pandemic in 2021. I certified for benefits yesterday morning (around 9am) and was expecting the money to hit my old EDD card today like it used to back then, but nothing's showing up yet. Did they change how long it takes for payments to process now? Back in 2021 it was always next-day for me once I certified. I still have the same card from before - do they even use the same card system anymore? Starting to get nervous since rent is due next week and I'm counting on this payment. Any insight from recent claimants would be super helpful!

The timeline has definitely changed since 2021. EDD switched from Bank of America to Money Network for their debit cards in 2022. If you're still using your old BofA card, that's your problem - the funds won't go there. You need to set up your new Money Network account and card. Check your UI Online account to see if there's a notification about setting this up. You should have received something in the mail too. If your payment shows as 'paid' in the system but you don't have the card, you'll need to contact EDD to get it sorted.

•Oh crap! I had no idea they switched the card system. I just assumed they'd use my old one. I haven't received anything in the mail about a new card yet. Just checked my UI Online and it says payment was issued, but nothing about Money Network. How long does it usually take to get the new card once they process the first payment?

YEP they completely changed the payment system in 2022!! I went thru this exact thing 3 months ago. Your BoA card is useless now. They use Money Network and you gotta wait for them to mail you the new card which takes FOREVER (like 7-10 days). BUT you can call and request expedited shipping if you're desperate. also check if u selected direct deposit during ur application - thats an option now and WAY better than the cards IMO.

•Thanks for the info! I don't remember seeing a direct deposit option when I applied, but maybe I missed it? I'll check my UI Online account again. 7-10 days is a long time to wait when you're broke! Definitely going to call about expedited shipping.

I think they send the cards automatically after your first payment is processed. At least thats what happened with me last December. Check ur claim history page to see if it shows 'paid' status. If it does, the card is probably already on its way. They're slow AF with everything now.

your cards probably already on the way, just gotta wait. the whole system is different now than 2021. payment takes 24-48 hrs to process then another 5-7 business days for card delivery. sucks but thats how it works now

•5-7 BUSINESS days??? That's insane. I'm already behind on bills. I wish they'd warned me about this when I filed.

To clarify what others have said, there are now TWO main payment options with EDD that were implemented after the pandemic: 1. Money Network debit card (replaced BofA cards in July 2022) 2. Direct deposit to your bank account You can check your payment preference by logging into UI Online and going to 'Profile' then 'Payment Preference'. If you didn't specifically select direct deposit during application, the default is the Money Network card. If your payment status shows 'paid' in the system, the process works like this: - 24-48 hours for payment to process after certification - If it's your first payment on a new claim, they'll automatically mail you a Money Network card - Standard delivery is 7-10 business days - You can call Money Network directly at 1-888-928-1255 to request expedited delivery for a fee For future payments, I highly recommend setting up direct deposit once you get access to your account.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll check my payment preference as soon as I get home. Definitely going to switch to direct deposit once I can. Do you know if I'll be able to transfer the funds from the Money Network card to my bank account once I receive it?

Has anyone actually tried calling EDD to get the card expedited? I'm in the same boat and have been trying to reach them for 2 days with no luck. All I get is the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and then it hangs up. So frustrating!

•You don't call EDD to expedite the card - you need to contact Money Network directly at 1-888-928-1255. They're the ones who handle the cards now, not EDD. But if you need to actually speak with an EDD rep about other issues, I've had good luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a system that calls EDD for you and gets you in the queue, then calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of redial hell last month when I had issues with my certification. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

one more thing - once you DO get your card, make sure to download the Money Network app. It's way easier to manage everything from there than trying to use their website. You can check your balance, see transaction history, and set up transfers to your bank account (YES you can transfer the money to your own bank, which is what I do every time).

•That's good to know about the app and transfers! At least there's that option. I'll download it as soon as I get the card. Thanks for the tip!

UPDATE: I called Money Network at the number you all provided and they confirmed my card was mailed yesterday! They said standard delivery is 7-10 days but I paid the $15 fee to expedite it, should be here in 3 business days now. Thanks everyone for your help! I had no idea about all these changes since 2021.

•Glad you got it sorted out! When you receive the card, don't forget to set up your online account right away and consider switching to direct deposit for future payments. It's much more convenient and you'll get your money 1-2 days faster.
