EDD only paid for 3 days - When will I get next payment and will direct deposit work immediately?

Finally got my first EDD payment today after waiting FOREVER, but it only covered 3 days?? I'm confused since I certified for the full 2 weeks. Is this normal for the first payment or did I mess something up? Also, I set up direct deposit in UI Online last week, but I'm not sure if this payment will go to my bank account or if they're going to send me that Money Network card first and then future payments will be direct deposit. Anyone know how this works? I really need this money ASAP for rent due next week!

The first payment is often partial if there was some kind of hold or pending issue on your claim for a few days. Did you have any pending issues that got resolved recently? When you check your UI Online payment history, does it say why only 3 days were paid? As for direct deposit, they'll still mail you a Money Network card as a backup, but if you set up direct deposit correctly, the payments should go directly to your bank account within 1-2 business days of showing as 'paid' in the system.

Thanks for answering! I checked my UI Online and it shows 'pending eligibility interview' for part of the period, which I guess explains the partial payment. My interview is scheduled for next week. Will they pay me for those pending days after the interview if everything goes well?

UR NEXT PAYMENT will depend on when u certify next. EDD pays in 2-week chunks usually, so check ur certification date in UI Online. It should tell u exactly when to certify again. Most ppl certify every 2 wks on Sunday. And yeah they ALWAYS send that stupid card even if u do direct deposit. But ur money should go to ur bank if u set it up right. Just double check in UI Online that ur bank info is correct!!

My next certification date is this Sunday. So I'm guessing I'll get paid for those pending days and the new two weeks all at once? That would be awesome!

They did the same thing to me with my first payment! It's because there's usually a "waiting period" week for your first claim that you don't get paid for, and then if there's any pending issues, they'll only pay for the days that are clear. For the direct deposit - I set mine up right away but my first payment still came on the card. All the ones after that went to my bank though. I think it depends on timing - if they already processed the payment before your direct deposit was fully verified.

Ughh so I might have to wait for the card anyway? That's frustrating! How long did it take for your card to arrive in the mail?

The initial EDD payment process can be confusing. Here's what's likely happening: 1. Your first certification period probably included your waiting week (first week is unpaid) 2. The remaining days may have been partially paid due to an eligibility issue For direct deposit: EDD always mails a Money Network card even if you've set up direct deposit. However, if your bank information was properly verified before the payment was processed, it should go directly to your account. You can check your payment method in UI Online under "Payment Information". Your next payment will be released after you certify for your next two-week period, assuming no eligibility issues. If you have a pending interview, any withheld days will be paid retroactively if you're found eligible.

Thank you for explaining! I just checked Payment Information and it shows "Direct Deposit" as active, so hopefully that means the money will go straight to my account. This is all so confusing for first-timers.

I had the exact same thing happen!!! First payment was like partial and then I got the rest after my interview. They're so slow with everything it makes me crazy. But yeah you'll get a card AND direct deposit will work. Kinda stupid system if you ask me lol

The EDD system isn't stupid, it's actually designed this way intentionally. They send everyone a card because if there's ever an issue with your bank account, they can still get payments to you. I had my direct deposit working fine for months, then my bank flagged an EDD deposit as suspicious and rejected it. Having the card as backup meant I could still access my benefits without waiting for a new payment method to be set up.

If you're stuck waiting on EDD to process payments or need to reach someone about your partial payment, you might want to try Claimyr. I was in a similar situation with partial payments and couldn't get through on the phone for DAYS. Claimyr connected me with an EDD rep in about 15 minutes instead of spending hours redialing. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep I spoke with was able to immediately explain why my payment was partial and fix the remaining balance to be released. Definitely worth it when you're stressing about rent!

Thanks for the tip! If my interview doesn't resolve everything next week, I might check this out. I've already spent hours trying to get through on the phone with no luck.

They're not saying they got a payment after only 3 days of filing. They're saying their payment only covered 3 days of benefits instead of the full two weeks they certified for. This is common when there are pending issues on specific days within a certification period.

About your next payment - if your interview goes well, you should see the remaining days from your first certification period paid pretty quickly (1-2 days after interview), and then your next full payment after you certify this Sunday. Just make sure you answer all interview questions honestly and have documentation ready about your last employer and why you're not working. They can ask tricky questions sometimes and if your answers don't match what your employer said, it can cause more delays.

Thanks for the heads up! I actually got laid off so it should be pretty straightforward, but I'll definitely have my last paystub and separation letter ready just in case.

Just wanted to add something important - make sure you're still doing your required work search activities every week, even for weeks that are partially pending payment. I made the mistake of slacking on my work search during a pending period, then when they finally approved everything, I got disqualified for those weeks because I couldn't document my work search efforts when they asked for them.

Oh that's a really good point! I've been applying to jobs and keeping track in a spreadsheet, so I should be covered. Do they ever actually ask to see your work search records?

I've been on unemployment since January, and YES they absolutely do request work search records sometimes. I got selected for a random audit last month and had to provide details for every single job contact I listed during certification. Keep good records with dates, company names, position titles, and how you applied. It's a huge headache if you get audited without proper documentation.

Well that's terrifying! Definitely going to make my tracking more detailed. Thanks for the warning!

Hey there! I went through the exact same thing a few months ago - partial first payment is super common and frustrating when you're stressed about bills. From what I've seen, your situation sounds totally normal. The 3-day payment is likely because of that pending eligibility interview you mentioned, and once that's resolved, you should get the backpay for those missing days pretty quickly. One thing I learned the hard way - even though you have direct deposit set up, that first payment might still come on the card depending on when they processed it vs when your bank info got verified in their system. But don't worry, future payments should go straight to your account once everything is sorted out. Good luck with your interview next week! Just be prepared with any documentation about your job separation and you should be fine. The waiting is the worst part, but it does get easier once you get into the routine of certifying every two weeks.

Thank you so much for the reassurance! It's really helpful to hear from someone who went through the same thing. I was starting to panic thinking I did something wrong with my claim. The waiting really is the worst part - especially when you're counting every dollar for rent. I feel a lot better knowing this is just how the system works and not some major issue with my claim. Hopefully after the interview next week I'll be back on track with regular payments!

I'm going through almost the exact same situation right now! Filed my claim about a month ago and just got my first payment yesterday - also only for 3 days instead of the full two weeks I certified for. Like you, I have a pending eligibility interview scheduled (mine's this Thursday). It's such a relief to see I'm not the only one dealing with this! I also set up direct deposit but I'm still waiting to see if the payment hits my bank account or if I need to wait for that card to arrive. The uncertainty is killing me when bills are due! Has anyone here had experience with how quickly they pay out the backpay after a successful eligibility interview? I'm really hoping it doesn't take another few weeks to get those missing days paid.

Hey! It's so reassuring to know someone else is going through the exact same thing right now. I was starting to feel like I was the only one confused by this whole process. My interview is next week too, so we're basically on the same timeline! From what everyone here is saying, it sounds like the backpay comes pretty quickly after a successful interview - within 1-2 days. I'm really hoping that's true because I need those missing days to cover rent next week. Good luck with your interview on Thursday! Maybe we can update each other on how it goes?

I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago! The partial first payment is totally normal - it's usually because of the waiting week plus any pending issues on your claim. In my case, I had a similar eligibility interview and they paid out all the missing days within 24 hours of completing it successfully. For the direct deposit, even though you set it up, your first payment might still come on the card since they probably already processed it before your bank info was fully verified. But all my payments after that went straight to my checking account, so don't stress too much about it. One tip for your interview - have everything organized ahead of time (last paystub, separation paperwork, etc.) and just be honest about your situation. Since you mentioned you were laid off, it should be pretty straightforward. The whole process gets much smoother once you get past this initial hurdle!
