EDD keeps sending email statements - does it mean money on my debit card?

I stopped certifying for unemployment about 3 months ago when I found a new job, but I'm still getting these account statements from EDD in my email every 2 weeks. I haven't opened my UI Online account in forever because I thought everything was done. Does getting these statements mean there's still money on my Money Network card that I haven't used? Or is it just some automatic thing that keeps going until they officially close my claim? I'm confused why they'd keep sending statements if there's nothing there. Thanks for any help!

Those statements are just automatic notifications from the EDD system. I got them for like 6 months after my claim ended. They don't necessarily mean you have money waiting - it just shows your account activity (which is probably zero). You can always check your Money Network card balance directly through the Money Network app or website if you're curious. Or log back into UI Online and check your claim balance. But yeah, it's just their system being slow to realize you're done with unemployment.

Oh that's a relief! I was starting to wonder if I missed some money or if they were going to say I owed them something. I'll check the Money Network app just to be sure. Thanks!

This is actually pretty common. The email notifications are part of EDD's automated system and continue until your benefit year officially ends. Your benefit year lasts for 12 months from when you first filed, even if you stop certifying or get a job before that. Two things you should do: 1. Log into UI Online and check your claim status/balance 2. Check your Money Network card balance if you have one If you had any outstanding weeks that were paid after you stopped checking, there might actually be funds on your card. But it's more likely just the system running its course until your benefit year expires. BTW, if you ever need to contact EDD about this or anything else, try Claimyr (claimyr.com). They've got a service that helps you get through to an EDD rep without the endless busy signals. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km - saved me hours of frustration when I had a similar issue last month.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! That makes sense about the benefit year being 12 months long regardless of when I stop certifying. I'll definitely check both places to make sure. And thanks for the Claimyr suggestion - I might need that if there's anything weird with my account.

I had this happen too and ignored the emails for months. Turned out I actually DID have money on my card! One payment went through after I stopped certifying because of some adjustment they made. Check your card!

THIS HAPPENED TO ME TOO!!! EDD is TERRIBLE at communicating!!! I had almost $900 sitting there for FOUR MONTHS because they retroactively approved a week I thought was denied!!! Their system is completely BROKEN and they don't even TELL YOU when they put money on your card sometimes!!! 😡😡😡

The email statements are automatically generated for all claimants with an active benefit year. Your benefit year remains active for 12 months from your initial filing date, regardless of whether you're still certifying or receiving benefits. These statements serve several purposes: 1. Showing account activity (payments, certifications, adjustments) 2. Maintaining a record of your claim status 3. Providing notification of any balance changes While most often there's no money waiting when you've stopped certifying, there are exceptions: - Retroactive adjustments to previous payments - Appeal decisions that resulted in payment - Benefit audits that found underpayment I recommend checking both your UI Online account and Money Network card balance. In UI Online, go to "Claim History" to see your most recent activity. For the Money Network card, either use their app, website, or call the number on the back of your card. If you do find funds, they remain accessible until the card's expiration date, which is typically 3 years from issuance.

wait so even if we got a job we still can get $$$ if they find underpayment from before?? how do u know if that happend?

Be careful with this! my friend kept getting statements and ignored them for months and it turned out EDD had made an error and was saying she was overpaid by like $3000! She didn't see the overpayment notices buried in all those regular statements and almost ended up with a collections action. You should definitely log in and check what those statements actually say!

Oh no, that's scary! I'll definitely check everything right away. I've just been assuming they were routine statements since I'd finished with unemployment, but now I'm worried there could be something important in them. Thanks for the warning!

Just an update - I logged into UI Online and checked my Money Network card. Turns out there WAS money on there! EDD had processed an adjustment for one of my earlier weeks where I reported partial earnings. They recalculated and added about $175 to my card that I never knew about. So thanks everyone for encouraging me to actually check instead of just ignoring those emails!

That's great! This is actually pretty common with EDD adjustments. Glad you checked and found the funds before they potentially expired. For anyone else reading this thread - always check your UI Online account periodically even after you stop certifying, especially if you keep receiving statements.

Wow, this thread is so helpful! I'm in a similar situation where I've been getting these statements for months after stopping my claim. Reading about everyone finding money they didn't know about has me nervous that I might have missed something important. Definitely going to check my UI Online and Money Network card today. It's crazy how EDD's system works - you'd think they'd send a specific notification when they make adjustments or add funds instead of burying it in regular statements. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences, especially about the potential overpayment issues. Better safe than sorry!

You're absolutely right about EDD's communication being confusing! I just went through this same thing after reading this thread. The system really should send clear notifications when they make adjustments instead of hiding everything in those routine statements. It's honestly a bit stressful not knowing if you're missing something important or if there's money just sitting there. Definitely check everything - better to log in and find nothing than to miss funds or important notices. This thread has been a real eye-opener about how common this situation is!
