EDD Money Network card PIN works at ATM but declined at stores - also confused about my claim ending after 4 months?
So frustrated with this new Money Network card! Been on unemployment since January 2025 and I'm dealing with two major issues: 1) The card PIN works perfectly at ATMs when I withdraw cash, but keeps getting declined when I try to use it at stores for direct purchases. Has anyone else experienced this weird inconsistency? The Money Network app is completely useless for troubleshooting. 2) Looking at my claim history, next week appears to be my final payment?? I've only been on unemployment for about 4 months and I thought benefits lasted for a year. Did I exhaust my benefit amount already? I'm still struggling to find work in my field (marketing). Will my claim automatically extend or do I need to file something new? Anyone have experience with claims ending sooner than expected? This is stressing me out because my job search is taking longer than I anticipated.

OMG same card issues!! Works at Wells Fargo ATMs but declined at Target twice. So annoying. For ur other question, the 1 year is just the period ur allowed to collect, but u only get a certain $ amount total. Check ur award letter, it shows max benefit amount. When that runs out ur done. Fed-Ed extensions ended years ago.

•Thanks for explaining! I'm going to dig up my award letter tonight. Do you know if there's any way to get an extension nowadays or am I just out of luck when it's gone?

The Money Network card issue is likely a merchant category code problem. Some retailers are coded differently than ATMs in the payment system. You need to call Money Network directly at the number on the back of your card and request they enable all merchant category codes for your card. Many cards come with restrictions by default. Regarding your claim - unemployment benefits in California typically provide 26 weeks of payments, not a full year. The benefit year is 12 months, but that's just the window during which you can collect your allocated weeks. Once you've received all 26 weeks (or your maximum benefit amount), your claim is exhausted regardless of how much time has passed.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll definitely call Money Network about the category codes. And wow, I completely misunderstood how the benefit year works - I thought I'd get payments for the full year as long as I kept certifying. This changes my whole financial planning. Is there any way to extend benefits once the 26 weeks are up?

For your Money Network card issue - I had the exact same problem! The PIN worked at ATMs but not at stores. I called the Money Network customer service (took forever to reach someone), and they said I needed to activate the debit feature separately from the ATM feature. After they fixed it on their end, the card started working everywhere. Regarding your benefits ending - yes, you've likely exhausted your maximum benefit amount. Standard UI claims provide a specific dollar amount based on your previous earnings, typically distributed over 26 weeks. The "benefit year" is just the 12-month period you're eligible to collect those benefits. Unfortunately, there are currently no automatic extensions available like there were during COVID. Once your regular UI benefits are exhausted, you'd need to wait until you qualify for a new claim by earning sufficient wages in a new base period.

If you're having trouble getting through to EDD about your claim ending, try Claimyr. I was in a similar situation last month, couldn't get anyone on the phone for days. Used Claimyr and got connected to an EDD rep in under 30 minutes. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works. The site is claimyr.com - way better than wasting days trying to get through on your own.

•Sounds like a paid advertisement. Does that service actually work? I've been trying to reach EDD for a week straight with no luck.

•Not an ad, I promise! It worked for me - got through in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for 3 days on my own. The rep explained my benefit situation clearly and told me exactly what I needed to do. Worth it for me because I couldn't get through otherwise.

To clarify some confusion in this thread: currently, there are NO extension programs available for regular UI in California. The extensions mentioned during COVID (PEUC, Fed-Ed, PUA) have all ended. Your friend who "got an extension" likely either: 1) Filed a new claim after earning sufficient wages in a new base period 2) Had a claim adjustment after wages were added to their existing claim 3) Qualified for a different program like State Disability Insurance (SDI) or Paid Family Leave (PFL) Once your regular UI benefits exhaust, you'll need to earn enough wages in a new base period to qualify for a new claim. The base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before filing. For the Money Network card issue, definitely call customer service - it's usually either a merchant category code restriction or a PIN/debit activation issue.

•This is really helpful information, thank you! I guess I need to intensify my job search since there won't be any safety net after my benefits run out. I'll call Money Network about the card issue tomorrow morning.

when my money network card had issues I just gave up and switched to direct deposit lol. way easier. go to your ui online account and change payment preference. btw ur benefit amount is on ur ui online homepage, says something like "claim balance" - when that hits zero ur done until u qualify for a new claim by working again

Since you mentioned having trouble finding work in marketing, you might want to look into the EDD's job services programs while you still have some benefits left. California Training Benefits (CTB) can sometimes extend your eligibility period if you enroll in approved training. Also, check out the America's Job Center of California (AJCC) for free career counseling and job search assistance. They sometimes know about industry-specific programs that can help marketing professionals find new positions or develop additional skills.

•I had no idea about these programs! I'll definitely look into the California Training Benefits option - maybe I can use this opportunity to expand my digital marketing skills while I continue searching. Thanks for this valuable tip!
