EDD Benefit Year Ending - Extend or File New Claim?
Hey everyone, I just got a letter from unemployment saying my benefit year is up after 12 months. They want me to contact them to either extend it or file a new claim. Has anyone been through this process recently? What should I expect? I'm not sure if I should try to extend or just file a new claim at this point.

I went through this last month. It's pretty straightforward - you'll need to file a new claim. They'll review your work history for the past 18 months to see if you qualify for a new claim. If you don't have enough wages, they might put you back on your old claim if you have any benefits left. Just be prepared to answer questions about any work you've done since your last claim started.

This is super helpful, thanks! Do you remember how long it took for them to process your new claim?

It took about 2 weeks for me, but I've heard it can take up to a month for some people. Just make sure you keep certifying for benefits while you wait!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imho

Can confirm, I used it last week. Got through in about an hour. Way better than spending all day hitting redial š

Pro tip: When you file a new claim, make sure you report ALL income, even if it's just a little bit from gig work or part-time jobs. They'll find out anyway and it'll save you headaches later.

It's to prevent fraud and make sure people are still eligible. But yeah, it's a pain in the ass.

Here's a detailed breakdown of what to expect when your benefit year ends: ā¢ You'll need to file a new claim, even if you still have a balance on your current claim ā¢ They'll review your work history for the past 18 months ā¢ If you qualify for a new claim, they'll start you on that ā¢ If you don't qualify, but still have a balance on your old claim, they might put you back on that ā¢ Be prepared to provide info on any work you've done, even part-time or gig work ā¢ The process can take 2-4 weeks, sometimes longer ā¢ Keep certifying for benefits while you wait ā¢ If you had any changes (like a move or new bank account), update that info ā¢ You might need to verify your identity again Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Anyone else notice that the EDD website is always "undergoing maintenance" when you actually need to use it? š

Heads up, there's been some changes to the process recently. Make sure you check the EDD website for the most up-to-date info before you file. They've added some new questions about job search activities.

That sucks, I'm sorry you're dealing with that. Have you tried contacting your local assemblymember? Sometimes they can help speed things up.
