Can I apply for both UI and SDI benefits simultaneously to see which processes faster?

I lost my job three weeks ago due to layoffs but I also have a documented medical condition that prevents me from working right now. I'm in a really tight spot financially with rent due next week and literally $240 left in my account. Has anyone successfully filed for both UI and SDI claims at the same time to see which one processes faster? I know you can't collect both simultaneously - I'm not trying to double dip or commit fraud. I just need SOME income coming in ASAP and will withdraw the other claim once one starts paying. Is this even allowed or will filing both automatically flag my account for review and delay everything even more?

This is actually a common question, but proceeding carefully is important. You technically CAN file for both, but you need to understand how this works: 1. UI requires you to be able and available for work 2. SDI requires a doctor to certify you cannot work due to medical condition These are contradictory requirements, so while EDD's systems might allow you to apply for both, you'll likely trigger a benefits eligibility interview when they notice the conflicting claims. This could potentially delay BOTH claims rather than speed things up. If your medical condition prevents you from working, SDI is the appropriate benefit. If you're able to work despite your condition but were laid off, then UI is appropriate. You need to decide which accurately reflects your current situation.

Thank you for explaining this clearly. My doctor already completed the medical certification saying I can't work for at least 8 weeks. Sounds like I should just focus on the SDI claim then since that's more accurate for my situation right now. Do you know how long SDI typically takes to process these days? The EDD website just says 14 days but I've heard horror stories about much longer waits.

dont do this!!! i tried this exact thing in january and both my claims got stuck in review for like 2 months!! the system flagged me for fraud investigation because the UI application asks if you have any conditions preventing you from working (which I said no to) but then my SDI app said I couldnt work. total nightmare and I almost got evicted waiting for it to resolve

Omg thank you for posting this!! I was literally about to do the same thing tomorrow. Guess I'll just stick with my SDI claim and pray it goes through quickly 🙏

I actually work for a disability attorney and we see this issue all the time. Here's what happens: EDD runs cross-checks on their claims, and when they see someone applying for two benefits with contradictory eligibility requirements, it triggers a manual review. Instead of getting paid faster, you'll end up with both claims delayed by weeks or even months. If your doctor has already certified you can't work, SDI is your best option. The standard processing time is 14 business days if everything is properly submitted, but the reality right now is closer to 3-4 weeks for most initial claims. Make sure your doctor has submitted all the required medical documentation correctly to avoid further delays.

3-4 weeks?! I'm going to be completely broke by then. Do you know if there's any way to expedite an SDI claim? I have my eviction notice ready to submit as proof of financial hardship if that helps.

I went through something similar last year. You might want to look into whether your state has any emergency assistance programs while waiting for SDI to kick in. Many counties have rental assistance and emergency food benefits that don't take as long to process. Also check if your medical condition qualifies for any other emergency programs.

Thanks, I'll definitely look into those options. I didn't even think about county-level assistance programs.

When I was waiting for my SDI claim last year I kept calling EDD over and over trying to get someone to push my claim through faster. Almost impossible to even get through to an agent! I spent DAYS just hitting redial. total waste of time

If you need to get through to EDD about your SDI claim, I'd recommend Claimyr. It's a service that connects you with an EDD agent usually within an hour instead of spending days calling. It worked great for me when my SDI claim was stuck for weeks. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km or just go to claimyr.com. Saved me so much frustration and helped get my claim processed after talking to the right agent.

One more thing about SDI claims - make sure you check your UI Online account daily and respond to any requests for additional information immediately. A common reason for delays is when they request more documentation and the claimant doesn't see the notification for days or weeks. Also, if you have access to your doctor, make sure they're responding to any EDD inquiries promptly.

This!! My SDI was delayed for 6 extra weeks because I missed an information request buried in my UI Online inbox. They don't always send email notifications for these requests so check the actual account daily!

does anyone know if applying for UI after getting denied SDI flaggs your account again??? my doctor sent in the wrong form and my SDI got denied but im thinking of applying for UI now since i am actually looking for work that accommodates my condition

That's a different situation. If your SDI was formally denied (not just pending), then applying for UI afterward shouldn't automatically flag anything. Just make sure when you apply for UI, you accurately report your ability to work. If you have restrictions on the type of work you can do due to your condition, you'll need to note those during the UI application process.

I'm really sorry you're going through this tough situation. Based on what others have shared here, it sounds like filing for both would likely cause more delays rather than speed things up. Since you already have medical certification that you can't work for 8 weeks, SDI seems like the right path. While waiting for SDI to process, here are a few things that might help with your immediate financial crisis: - Contact your county's emergency rental assistance program - many have expedited processing for people facing eviction - Look into local food banks and emergency assistance programs through 211 (dial 2-1-1) - Call your utility companies to set up payment plans or see if they have hardship programs - Check if your area has emergency cash assistance programs through social services Also, make absolutely sure you're checking your UI Online account daily for any requests for additional documentation. Missing those notifications seems to be a major cause of delays based on what others have experienced here. Good luck, and I hope your claim processes quickly!

This is such helpful advice! I especially didn't know about the 211 service - just called and they connected me with three different emergency assistance programs in my county. One of them can help with rent within 48 hours if you have an eviction notice. Also scheduling a call with my utility company today about payment plans. Thank you so much for taking the time to list all these resources!

Just wanted to add that if you're really in a bind while waiting for SDI, some credit unions and community banks offer emergency micro-loans (usually $200-500) that you can get within 24-48 hours, especially if you can show pending benefits documentation. Also, many churches and community organizations have emergency assistance funds that don't require you to be a member - they often can help with utilities or groceries to free up your remaining cash for rent. One more tip: if your doctor filled out the SDI forms, ask them for a copy of what they submitted. Sometimes there are small errors or missing information that can cause delays, and catching those early can save weeks. You can also ask your doctor's office to follow up proactively if EDD contacts them for additional information. Hang in there - this situation sucks but you'll get through it. Focus on the SDI claim and use these emergency resources to bridge the gap.
