EDD approved my claim but employer in different state - worried about appeal timeline

I've been working remotely from California for a company based in Florida for the past 18 months. I lost my job last month and filed for unemployment through California EDD since that's where I live and pay taxes. My claim was approved last week and I've already certified for benefits twice, but I'm really anxious about whether my Florida employer can still appeal this. I've heard horror stories about having to repay benefits if an employer successfully appeals. Does anyone know: (1) What percentage of UI benefits come from the employer vs the state government? (2) Is there a deadline for when my employer has to file an appeal? (3) When can I feel confident that I'm actually going to keep receiving benefits without suddenly owing everything back? I'm checking my UI Online account obsessively every day worried about this!

My sister had her employer in New York file an appeal when she was living in California, and what a nightmare that turned into! I still remember her calling me crying because they froze her benefits for almost two months while they sorted it out. She had to provide like a million documents proving she was actually working from California. Eventually she won the appeal because she was able to show her internet service bills, rent payments, and other evidence that she was physically working in California. The whole time she was so stressed about potentially having to pay back thousands of dollars.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did she end up getting backpay for the weeks they froze her benefits during the appeal process?

Just to clarify for everyone in this thread: 1) Remote workers file for unemployment in the state where they physically perform their work (usually where they live) 2) Multi-state workers may have their wages combined through a process called a Combined Wage Claim 3) Employers have 30 days to appeal an EDD determination 4) If an appeal happens, you'll receive a notice for a telephone hearing with an Administrative Law Judge 5) Benefits typically continue during the appeal process but could be subject to repayment if the decision is reversed The system can be confusing, especially with remote work becoming more common, but these are the basic rules EDD follows for interstate employment situations.

Certified for EDD benefits after reapplication - still showing pending after how many days?

Hey everyone, I'm so confused about payment timelines right now. My retail hours got slashed from 35 to 15 per week last month, so I had to reapply for partial unemployment. Got approved (yay!) and just completed my first certification yesterday morning. My UI Online account shows the status as "pending" but I have no idea how long this typically takes to change to paid. Is this normal? Should I be worried? My rent is due next week and I'm counting on this payment to make it. Does anyone know the usual timeline from certification to seeing money on your card these days?

did u report all ur work hours correctly when you certified? if u mess that up it can cause delays

Yes, I was super careful about reporting the exact hours and earnings. I even double-checked against my paystub before submitting.

Just following up - any update on your payment status? Has it changed from pending to paid yet?

Good news! It just switched to paid this morning - so it took about 3 days total. The money isn't in my account yet but at least it's moving forward. Thanks everyone for the help and keeping me sane during the wait!

EDD transfer to county jobs? Anyone made the switch after federal layoff?

Been struggling since getting laid off from my federal position last month. I've been exploring different options while waiting for my EDD claim to process (still pending after 3 weeks). Someone mentioned that county agencies in the Bay Area have a ton of openings right now that might be a good fit for former federal employees. Has anyone here successfully transitioned from federal to county work? Did your benefits/retirement transfer over at all? Would love to hear experiences especially regarding how long the hiring process took compared to waiting for EDD payments to kick in. I'm worried about making ends meet in the transition period.

UGHHH I finally got through to EDD yesterday after trying for WEEKS and they told me my federal claim needs ANOTHER review from some special department!!! This is absolute INSANITY. Meanwhile rent is due TOMORROW and I have no idea what to do. These county job applications are taking forever too - why do I need to upload my resume AND fill out all the same info in their system?? Makes no sense!!!

I'm so sorry you're going through this! It's really stressful. Have you been able to request an extension from your landlord? Some of them are understanding about government job transitions.

One thing that helped me with the transition was applying for county jobs while still going through the EDD process. If you're strategic about it, you can time things so you get a few weeks of unemployment benefits while going through interviews, then hopefully start your new job before benefits run out. Just make sure to stop certifying for EDD once you start working!

EDD showing 'paid' for 10 days but no money on Money Network card - seasonal worker confused

This is really frustrating! I'm a construction worker and get laid off every winter season like clockwork. Filed my UI claim on November 5th, got paid for my first week no problem. Then I certified for the two weeks ending December 7th, and my UI Online account has been showing 'paid' status for those weeks for almost 10 days now, but absolutely NOTHING has shown up on my Money Network card or in my bank account. I've called EDD twice and gotten through (miracle!) and both reps just said 'there are no issues with your claim, just keep waiting.' I've been doing seasonal unemployment for 5 years and never experienced this kind of delay before. Now I'm supposed to certify for two more weeks this Sunday, but I'm still waiting on almost $1,250 from my last certification. Anyone else experiencing weird payment delays right now? Is the system backed up? I'm starting to worry something's wrong despite what the reps told me.

Just a final thought - be sure to continue certifying this Sunday even if you haven't received the previous payments yet. Missing a certification can create even more delays. The money for the previous weeks will eventually come through (though I understand how frustrating the wait is), but you don't want to create any gaps in your claim.

Definitely! I'll keep certifying on schedule no matter what. That's one thing I've learned from previous years - never miss a certification date even if there are other issues going on. Thanks for the reminder though, it's important!

UPDATE: Finally got through to a Tier 2 specialist this morning! There IS a system-wide delay affecting Money Network card transfers for claims filed around the time mine was. The specialist confirmed my payments are approved and the money should be deposited in the next 48 hours. She added a note to expedite the transfer. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions! If anyone else is experiencing this, definitely ask to speak with a Tier 2 specialist who can see the payment processing system.

Great news! Thanks for updating us. This is really helpful information for others experiencing the same issue. Glad you got a knowledgeable specialist who could actually see what was happening rather than just telling you to wait!

of course they only admit theres a 'system-wide delay' after we all waste days trying to figure it out ourselves!!! why cant they just post this info on their website?? so typical of edd making us do all the work!

EDD took my tax refund for overpayment - can I apply for unemployment again?

I just had a situation with EDD overpayment that I'm confused about. I had an overpayment balance of around $9,000 from benefits I received in 2023 (turns out I wasn't eligible for some reason that wasn't clear to me). While I was attending school full-time last year, I wasn't working and tried to apply for unemployment but was denied because of this outstanding balance. Just filed my taxes last week and my refund was supposed to be about $10,000, but they intercepted $9,300 of it to pay off my EDD debt. I'm assuming my balance is now cleared, but I'm wondering - does this mean I can apply for unemployment benefits in the future if I need them? Or am I permanently blacklisted from the system? I've graduated and am looking for work now, so this matters to me. Anyone dealt with something similar?

wait i'm confused... if u were in school full time how were u eligible for unemployment anyway? don't u have to be available for full time work?

0 coins

You're correct that generally, full-time students aren't eligible for unemployment because they're not considered available for full-time work. However, there are exceptions: 1. Students in approved training programs (like CTB - California Training Benefits) 2. Students who are willing and able to leave school for full-time work 3. Students taking primarily evening/weekend classes that don't interfere with standard work hours The original poster mentioned they were denied while in school, which is consistent with standard eligibility rules. Now that they've graduated and are looking for work, they would potentially be eligible (assuming the overpayment issue is resolved).

oh that makes sense! thx for explaining

btw make sure u check that they didn't take TOO MUCH money from ur refund. sometimes they mess up the calculations and take more than u actually owe. happened to my friend and he had to fight for months to get his $600 back

0 coins

That's a good point! I should double-check the exact amount I owed. The last letter I got said around $9,000 but I'm not sure if there were interest or penalties added. I'll definitely look into that.
