EDD UI Online password reset nightmare - stuck in passcode loop for hours

I'm at my wits' end trying to access my UI Online account! Yesterday I spent over 2 hours on the phone with EDD because I couldn't log in. The rep tried to help me reset my password FOUR separate times, but every time we got to the passcode verification step, the system wouldn't accept the code they sent! The rep would read back the exact same code I received, but clicking 'Submit' just caused the page to refresh without any error message. We tried both text and email passcodes with the same result. The rep eventually transferred me to technical support who put me on hold for another 45 minutes before disconnecting me! I have bills due next week and desperately need to certify. Has anyone else experienced this password reset loop? Any tricks to make the passcode submission actually work?

UPDATE: I finally got it working! Used a combination of everyone's advice - borrowed my sister's MacBook, used Safari in private browsing mode, cleared all cookies first, and tried at exactly 10:15am. The passcode finally went through! Now I'm caught up on my certifications. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

Great to hear! You might want to set up alternate contact methods in your account now while you're in. Add both email and phone for recovery options to avoid this happening again. And document exactly what worked for you in case you need it in the future!

So glad you got it working! This thread is going to be super helpful for others dealing with the same issue. I've been putting off updating my recovery options for months - your experience is the push I needed to actually do it. It's crazy how many different workarounds people had to figure out for what should be a simple password reset. Definitely saving this post for future reference!

EDD conditional payment approved yesterday - when will money arrive?

I'm so confused about my EDD claim status. It just changed to 'conditional payment' yesterday after being stuck in pending for 3 weeks. Does this mean I'll actually get paid while they're still figuring out my eligibility? Has anyone experienced this before? I'm desperate for the money to come through since my rent is due in 5 days. For those who've had conditional payments, how long did it take to hit your account/card? I'm in California using the Money Network card if that matters.

UPDATE: The money just hit my card this morning! That was about 36 hours after the status changed to conditional payment. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help. Now I'm just wondering what happens next... should I expect an eligibility interview soon?

0 coins

Great news! Yes, you'll likely get a notice about an eligibility interview in the next 2-4 weeks. Just keep an eye on your UI Online inbox and your mail. Continue certifying every two weeks as normal. The interview is usually just to verify the reason for your job separation and confirm the information on your application is accurate.

Perfect, thank you! I'll make sure to watch for that notice and be prepared for the interview.

Glad to hear your money came through! Just wanted to add that when you do get scheduled for the eligibility interview, don't stress too much about it. I had mine about 3 weeks after my conditional payment started. The interviewer was actually pretty understanding and just wanted to make sure I had a valid reason for leaving my job. They asked basic questions like "why did you leave your position" and "have you been looking for work." As long as you're honest and have your paperwork ready (like your separation notice or any emails from your employer), you should be fine. The whole thing took maybe 15 minutes. Good luck!

Need help backdating EDD claim - any success stories or tips?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I need to backdate my unemployment claim but I'm not sure how to go about it. Has anyone here had experience with this? What's the process like? I'm worried I might have missed out on some benefits because I didn't file right away. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Does anyone know if backdating affects your weekly benefit amount? I'm worried if I backdate, they might recalculate and give me less ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

From what I understand, it shouldn't change your WBA. That's based on your earnings during the base period. But I'm not 100% sure, might wanna double check

@Keisha Johnson yes it can and you can end up owing edd

I actually went through the backdating process successfully about 6 months ago! Here's what worked for me: I had to backdate because I didn't realize I was eligible after being laid off (thought I had to wait longer). I called the EDD number every day at 8am sharp for like 2 weeks straight until I got through. The rep was actually really helpful and walked me through filling out the backdating request form. The key is having solid documentation - I had my layoff letter, emails showing I was looking for work during that period, and a letter from my doctor about some health issues that delayed me from filing initially. It took about 6 weeks to get approved, but I got all the back payments in one lump sum. Don't give up @Carmen Ortiz - it's definitely doable if you have legitimate reasons and stay persistent! ๐Ÿ’ช

EDD says I was 'available to return to work' as a teacher's aide - now facing 2021 overpayment after interview

I'm in a complete panic right now. Had a phone interview with EDD last month about my 2021 unemployment benefits. During the interview, the interviewer blindsided me saying my school district employer claimed I was 'definitely returning to work' after being laid off in March 2021 when schools shut down (I work as a teacher's aide). I explained repeatedly that there was ZERO guarantee of return - the whole district was in chaos and nobody knew if or when we'd be back. Yesterday I received a notice saying I wasn't eligible for benefits after that interview, but here's the confusing part - they haven't explicitly said I need to repay anything yet. But reading between the lines, I think an overpayment notice is coming for around $14,500 that I received during that period. I literally don't have that kind of money! The notice has appeal information on it, but since they haven't officially demanded repayment yet, I'm confused about whether I should appeal THIS notice or wait for an actual overpayment demand. Has anyone dealt with this specific school employee situation? The interviewer kept referencing some special rule about school employees and "reasonable assurance" of returning to work. I'm terrified and don't know what to do next.

To clarify the legal aspects here: you need to appeal the determination notice within 30 days. Once appealed, you'll eventually have a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge. For your specific situation, you need to focus on California UI Code 1253.3(b) which covers school employees. The key is proving you did NOT have "reasonable assurance" of returning to work in the same capacity. For your appeal and hearing preparation: 1. Gather any district communications showing uncertainty about reopening 2. Document any changes in your position, hours, or pay when schools eventually reopened 3. Get statements from supervisors if possible about the uncertainty during that period 4. Prepare a timeline showing how the COVID closure was different from normal breaks 5. Research any Department of Labor or EDD guidance specific to COVID school closures Finally, even if you lose the appeal, you can request a waiver of overpayment if repayment would cause financial hardship. You would need to complete DE 1446W form for that process.

Thank you for these specific points! I'll start working on this list right away. I never realized how complicated school employee unemployment rules were until now.

As someone who went through a similar situation with EDD, I want to emphasize what others have said - file that appeal IMMEDIATELY! Don't wait even one more day. The 30-day clock is ticking from when that determination notice was mailed. I'm a substitute teacher and faced the same "reasonable assurance" issue during COVID. What saved me was keeping detailed records of every communication from my district during that chaotic period. Look for emails where they used words like "tentative," "uncertain," "pending," or "subject to change" - these show there was NO reasonable assurance. Also, when schools did eventually reopen, did you return to the exact same position with the same hours and pay? If anything changed (fewer hours, different role, etc.), that's more evidence you didn't have reasonable assurance of returning to your specific job. One tip - when you file your appeal, be very specific about dates and include copies of any documentation you have. The more concrete evidence you can provide, the better your chances. Good luck - you can beat this!

EDD reported $25,000 on 1099-G that my husband never received - possible fraud?

My husband got his 1099-G tax form from EDD showing $32,000 in unemployment benefits for 2023, but he NEVER received this money or even certified for it! His UI Online account doesn't show these payments, and nothing was ever loaded onto his Money Network card. We're completely confused and worried about tax implications. Has his account been hacked? This is making our tax filing a nightmare since the IRS will think we earned this phantom money. Has anyone dealt with this kind of situation before? What steps should we take to fix this mess with EDD and the IRS? We're freaking out about potentially owing taxes on money we never saw!

Just checking in - have you been able to report this and start the process with EDD? Any updates?

Yes! After trying the regular EDD number for two days and getting nowhere, we tried the fraud-specific number and actually got through! They took all our information and said they're flagging the account for investigation. They said we should receive a corrected 1099-G in 4-6 weeks and we've already filed for our tax extension. We're also working with a CPA now to make sure we handle this correctly. Thanks for all the help everyone!

So glad you were able to get through to someone at EDD! That's honestly the hardest part of this whole process. The 4-6 week timeline sounds about right from what I've seen. Make sure to keep detailed records of all your communications with EDD - dates, times, reference numbers, names of who you spoke with. This documentation will be crucial if there are any delays or issues with the corrected 1099-G. Also, don't forget to monitor your credit reports regularly over the next few months since identity thieves often try multiple types of fraud once they have someone's personal information. You're handling this exactly right by getting professional tax help and filing the extension. Best of luck with the resolution!
