Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a situation here. I recently got married and changed my last name, but now I'm pregnant and planning to go on disability soon. I'm wondering what documents I need to submit to update my name with EDD. Has anyone gone through this process before? Any advice would be really appreciated!
I'm seriously stressing out about my EDD situation and could use some advice. In 2025, I missed my appeal hearing because EDD sent all the paperwork to my old address (I moved during COVID but apparently some of my address updates didn't go through). I just received an email saying I might be eligible for backpay - I was approved for ONE week but not the other 66 weeks during the pandemic. Those weeks all say "disqualified for quitting due to safety concerns." The thing is, I have my termination letter stating "involuntary termination" as the reason I left. When I called EDD yesterday, they told me I missed my appeal hearing that was scheduled back in April (it's now July), and I need to write a letter explaining why I missed the hearing AND why I waited more than 30 days to appeal. Honestly, I didn't even know I had a hearing scheduled, and with the massive appeals backlog, I had no idea I'd missed anything until now. Has anyone gone through this? How should I word this letter to have the best chance of getting my appeal reopened? I'm looking at potentially $31,400 in backpay that I desperately need.
UPDATE: I just want to thank everyone for the amazing advice. I've drafted my letter using all of your suggestions - the formal headings, timeline, mentioning the UI Code Section 1256, requesting Good Cause consideration, explaining the address issue, and including a copy of my termination letter. I'm also going to request the Affidavit of Support form and send everything via certified mail tomorrow. I'll try that Claimyr service next week to follow up by phone since calling on my own has been impossible. Will keep you all posted on what happens!
Good luck with your appeal! I went through something similar in 2023 and want to add one more tip - when you send your certified mail letter, also email a copy to the EDD appeals department (if you can find their email address) and reference the certified mail tracking number in your email subject line. This creates multiple touchpoints in their system. Also, consider reaching out to your state assemblyperson's office - they often have staff who specialize in EDD issues and can sometimes help expedite cases that are stuck in the system. Many people don't realize this is a free service available to constituents. With your termination letter showing involuntary termination, you really do have a solid case here. The fact that they approved one week but denied the rest on the same claim actually works in your favor - it shows their initial determination was inconsistent. Stay persistent!
I'm completely baffled right now. I lost my job at a marketing agency 3 weeks ago (layoffs due to budget cuts) and called EDD last week. The rep reviewed my info and told me I definitely qualify for unemployment benefits and should apply online. But when I log into UI Online, there's literally NOTHING there for me to apply for! The dashboard is basically empty - no option to file a new claim, no pending applications, nothing. I've tried logging out and back in several times, cleared my browser cache, even tried a different device. Still nothing. The weird part is I got a letter in the mail from EDD yesterday with my account number, but when I try to register that number in the system, it says I already have an account (which I do). Has anyone else experienced this UI Online glitch? How did you get it fixed? I'm getting really anxious because rent is due in 2 weeks and I NEED to get this claim started!
the entire california edd system is designed to confuse people i swear. like they WANT us to mess up and not get benefits. so glad u got it figured out!
So glad you got it sorted out! I went through this exact same confusion last year when I was laid off from my retail job. The EDD phone reps really should mention that UI Online is only for managing existing claims, not filing new ones. I wasted so much time refreshing that empty dashboard thinking it was broken! One thing I wish someone had told me earlier - after your claim gets approved, bookmark the UI Online certification page because you'll be going there every 2 weeks. And definitely sign up for text notifications if they offer it, because sometimes the email reminders end up in spam. The whole process gets much easier once you understand the system, but that initial setup is needlessly confusing for first-timers.
I'm completely confused about my EDD payment situation. My UI claim was approved on 2/3/2025 and I've certified for 4 weeks so far. My UI Online account shows 'paid' status for 3 weeks (totaling $1875), but when I check payment history, it only shows one payment of $625 issued on 2/24/2025. Where are the other two payments that show as 'paid'? Also, it's been almost 10 days since that first payment was supposedly issued, but I still haven't received my Money Network debit card in the mail. How long should this take? I'm getting really anxious since rent is due next week and I was counting on having access to these funds. Is there some hidden status issue with my claim I'm not seeing? Anyone dealt with similar payment/card delays recently?
I wanted to add something about your second question - regarding the technical issues with certification. While using your Assemblyperson's office is definitely effective (and great advice!), for future reference, if you experience technical issues with certification, you can also: 1. Request a backdate for any weeks affected by technical issues by submitting the request through your UI Online account 2. Use the "Contact Us" form in UI Online to specifically report technical issues - mark it urgent and they usually respond within 48 hours 3. For paper certifications, there's a specific fax number (1-866-215-9159) that processes them faster than regular mail I'd still recommend keeping an eye on your UI Online account daily for the next few days. The "paid" weeks that aren't showing in payment history should eventually appear there. If they don't by the end of the week, then you'll need to contact EDD directly to investigate.
I'm dealing with a similar payment delay issue right now! My card took 8 business days to arrive after my first payment was issued, so you should hopefully see yours soon. One thing that helped me track everything was screenshotting my UI Online account daily - that way I could see exactly when the payment history updated versus when my claim status changed. For the missing payments showing as "paid" but not in payment history, I've found that usually means they're in some kind of processing queue. In my case, two payments appeared in my payment history about 4 days after showing as "paid" in my claim status. Also, once you get your Money Network card, you can create an online account with them to track when funds are loaded - it's actually more reliable than waiting for EDD's payment history to update. Hang in there, the money should come through!
Hey everyone, I'm trying to reach the Department of Social Services (DSS) but I'm having trouble getting through. Has anyone had any luck contacting them recently? Also, I filed an unemployment claim with EDD a while back and it's still showing as pending. Any advice on how to speed up the process or get in touch with someone who can help?
I'm in the same boat with DSS. Been trying to update my address for weeks and can't get anyone on the phone. It's ridiculous how underfunded and understaffed these agencies are. We need to put pressure on our representatives to fix this mess!
I went through this exact same situation last month! For DSS, try their online portal first if you haven't already - sometimes you can get things done there without having to call. For EDD, definitely try the early morning calling strategy that others mentioned, but also check if there's a "contact us" form on their website. I submitted one of those and actually got a callback within a week. Also, make sure you're checking your EDD account online regularly - sometimes the status changes but they don't always send notifications. Hang in there, I know how stressful this is! ๐ช

Pro tip: If you're mailing in documents, send them via certified mail with return receipt. It's a few bucks extra but gives you proof they received your stuff. Trust me, it's worth it.

Hey Mia! I went through this exact same process about 6 months ago when I was pregnant with my second. Here's what worked for me: I sent in my certified marriage certificate along with a copy of my updated driver's license and Social Security card (make sure you update SS first like Harper mentioned!). I also included a brief cover letter explaining that I was updating my name due to marriage and would be applying for pregnancy disability soon. The whole process took about 6-8 weeks, so definitely start ASAP! Also, make sure your doctor is aware of the name change so there's no confusion when they submit your disability paperwork. Good luck with everything! ๐
