What to expect at EDD Disaster Assistance interview? Lost work due to storms

Got scheduled for a phone interview with EDD after applying for disaster unemployment assistance because of the flooding in January. I can't go back to work at the construction site since everything's damaged & underwater. Never been thru this process b4 and kinda nervous about what they'll ask me. Interview is next Tuesday morning. Anyone know what questions they typically ask during these disaster assistance interviews? Do I need to have specific documents ready? Been out of work for almost 3 weeks now and savings are running out fast.

I had my disaster interview last week! My apartment complex got flooded and I couldn't get to work for 2 weeks because my car was underwater in the parking lot. They asked for pictures of the flood and my car, plus a statement from my boss that I missed work because of it. The lady was super nice and understanding. I got approved right away! Good luck!!

That's encouraging! Glad it worked out for you. I'm taking pictures of everything now just to be safe.

I just went through a DUA interview two weeks ago after losing work due to the same January storms! The interviewer was really understanding about the situation. They asked me about my work schedule before the disaster, how exactly the flooding affected my ability to work, and what steps I'm taking to find temporary employment while waiting for my regular job to come back. One thing that helped me was having my employer send me a brief email stating that the worksite was closed due to flood damage - even if it's just a simple statement, having something official really seemed to make a difference. The text messages from your boss might work, but try to get at least one formal communication if possible. The whole process took about 20 minutes and I got approved the next day. Don't stress too much - they understand that natural disasters create legitimate unemployment situations and they're not trying to trip you up. Just be honest about your situation and have your documents organized. You've got this!

EDD certification stuck on pending instead of paid - anyone else experiencing delays?

So I certified for my UI benefits this morning around 7am (usually do it Sunday but got caught up with family stuff). It's now almost 10pm and my status is still showing as 'pending' in the portal. Normally, it switches to 'paid' within 2-3 hours max, and I get the money deposited to my Money Network card by Tuesday. I've been claiming for about 6 weeks now without any issues until today. I double-checked my certification answers and everything looks normal - reported no work, actively looking for jobs, available to work, etc. Anyone else experiencing delays with their payments switching from pending to paid this week? Getting a bit nervous since rent is due soon and I'm really counting on this payment.

Glad to hear your payment processed! For anyone else reading this who's still having issues, here's what I've learned from my experience: 1. Normal system delays usually resolve within 24-48 hours 2. If it goes beyond that, there might be a specific issue with your claim 3. Don't wait weeks hoping it'll resolve itself - after 3-4 days, try to contact EDD 4. Check UI Online for any notices about interviews or additional information needed 5. If you've hit your benefit year end or approaching maximum benefits, expect delays The EDD system isn't perfect, but usually these pending issues do resolve one way or another.

This is really helpful for future reference, thank you! I'll definitely follow this advice if it happens again.

I'm dealing with the same issue right now! Certified yesterday morning and it's still showing pending. This is my first time experiencing a delay like this - usually switches to paid within a few hours. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually really reassuring though. Sounds like system delays are more common than I thought. Going to wait until Thursday like some others suggested before trying to call EDD. Fingers crossed it resolves on its own!

EDD appeal deadline passed - can I still appeal if neighbor received my denial letter?

I'm freaking out right now. I just found an EDD denial letter ON MY DOORSTEP yesterday that says I needed to file an appeal by April 12th (that was 9 days ago!). I think my neighbor accidentally got my mail and just left it there instead of putting it in my mailbox. The letter is about my disqualification for benefits because they're saying I didn't provide sufficient work search activities, but I totally did submit everything they asked for! Does anyone know if I can still file an appeal even though I missed the deadline? This wasn't my fault - I never even received the letter until after the appeal date had passed! I'm so stressed because I really need these benefits to pay my rent next month. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation where you appealed late because you didn't get the notice on time?

UPDATE: I submitted my appeal yesterday explaining the situation with the misdelivered mail. I also attached screenshots of all my work search activities that should have qualified me for benefits in the first place. Using the Claimyr service someone suggested here, I actually got through to an EDD rep who said they would add notes to my account about the mail issue. They couldn't guarantee anything but said the ALJ would be able to see those notes when reviewing my case. Now just waiting for my hearing date. Thanks everyone for the helpful advice - will update again when I hear more!

You did exactly the right thing! Now make sure to keep certifying for benefits (if possible) while waiting for your hearing date. And start gathering any additional evidence you might need for the hearing about your work search activities - that will be the main focus if they accept your reason for the late appeal. Good luck!

Great job getting your appeal submitted so quickly! That was smart to use Claimyr to actually speak with someone at EDD. Just wanted to add a few tips for your upcoming hearing preparation: 1. Print out EVERYTHING - your work search log, job applications, screenshots of job postings you applied to, etc. Bring multiple copies in case the judge wants them. 2. Practice explaining your work search activities clearly and concisely. Be specific about dates, company names, and what type of positions you applied for. 3. If you have any email confirmations from employers acknowledging your applications, bring those too as proof. 4. Stay calm during the hearing - the judges deal with these cases all day and just want to understand what really happened. You're in a much better position now that you've filed quickly after receiving the notice and have documentation. Fingers crossed for you!

EDD claim stuck 'under review' after switching from old to new claim - payment pending for 2 weeks

Super frustrated right now! I exhausted most of my previous claim, then got laid off from my restaurant job last month. Since my old claim hadn't technically expired, they paid me for my first week of unemployment through that claim. Then I filed a new claim as instructed, certified for benefits, and got paid for my first week on the new claim - all normal. But now I'm stuck in limbo... my last TWO certifications just say 'received' and 'payment pending' with my claim status showing 'under review.' It's been stuck like this for over 14 days with zero explanation! I've tried calling at least 20 times but can't get past the automated system. Is this happening to anyone else RIGHT NOW? All the posts I can find about similar issues are from the COVID pandemic period, but I need to know what's going on in 2025! Has anyone successfully gotten out of this 'under review' status recently? My rent is due next week and I'm seriously panicking.

FINAL UPDATE: All my pending payments just switched to paid this morning! Exactly 6 business days after I spoke with the EDD rep. The money should be on my Money Network card tomorrow. Such a relief! For anyone else dealing with this, it seems the key is just getting through to someone who can check on your claim status and maybe add a note to expedite the review.

congrats!! gives me hope mine will resolve soon too. thx for coming back to update us!!

Congrats on getting it resolved! This gives me so much hope. I'm dealing with the exact same issue right now - been stuck in "under review" status for about 10 days after transitioning from my old claim to a new one. I was starting to panic thinking something was seriously wrong with my application. Your experience confirms what others have said about this being a standard consecutive claim review process. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service you mentioned since calling EDD directly has been impossible. Thanks for documenting your whole journey here - it's incredibly helpful for those of us going through the same thing!

EDD denied my claim saying I 'abandoned' my job while I was on disability - can I appeal?

I'm beyond frustrated right now. I had to take 3 months of disability leave due to a back injury (got all the proper documentation from my doctor). When I tried to return to work, my employer told me my position had been filled and they terminated me. Now I applied for unemployment, and EDD just denied my claim saying I 'voluntarily abandoned' my job! The letter states I'm not eligible because I 'left work without good cause.' This is completely false - I was on MEDICAL LEAVE with documentation! I'm now 7 weeks without any income. Has anyone successfully appealed this kind of situation? Do I need a lawyer? And if I win the appeal, will I get backpay for all these weeks I've been waiting? I have rent due next week and I'm starting to panic.

my cousin works for edd she says always appeal bc like 40% of people win just bc the employer doesnt show up to the hearing lol

That's actually really good to know! My employer is a small company so maybe they won't bother with the hearing. Thanks!

I went through something similar when my employer terminated me after FMLA leave. The key thing that helped me win my appeal was organizing all my documentation chronologically and creating a simple timeline showing: 1) when I went on leave, 2) when I was medically cleared to return, 3) when I contacted my employer to return, and 4) when they terminated me. The judge really appreciated having everything laid out clearly. Also, if you have any witnesses (coworkers, supervisors who knew about your leave), mention them in your appeal paperwork. Even if they don't testify, it shows you have corroborating evidence. Don't give up - this is exactly the kind of case appeals are designed for!
