PFL Application Process: Tips and Timeline for California EDD Paid Family Leave?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out this whole paid family leave thing. Has anyone gone through the process recently? Any tips or advice on what to expect? I'm feeling a bit lost and could use some guidance.

I just went through this last month! It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but don't worry. What specific questions do you have? I'd be happy to share my experience.

Thanks for responding! I guess my main question is how long did the whole process take for you? And did you have any issues with paperwork or anything?

The whole process took about 3 weeks for me from start to finish. As for paperwork, make sure you have all your medical documents in order. That was the trickiest part for me. Double-check everything before submitting!

3 weeks isn't too bad! I'll definitely make sure to have all my docs ready. Did you have to do any follow-up calls or was it all smooth sailing?

I had to make one follow-up call because they needed additional info from my doctor. But other than that, it was pretty smooth. Just stay on top of any communications they send you!

Ugh, I'm in the same boat. Been waiting for weeks now and haven't heard anything back. This system is so broken š¤¦āāļø

Have you tried calling them? I know its a pain, but sometimes you gotta be persistent to get answers.

I've tried calling like a million times but always get stuck on hold forever. It's so frustrating!

Pro tip: Make sure you keep copies of EVERYTHING you submit. I learned that the hard way when they claimed they never received my doctor's certification š

Hey guys, I found a method to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Check out this video for more info: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this? Kinda skeptical about paying for something like that...

I get the skepticism, but it honestly saved me hours of frustration. The time I saved was worth way more than $20 to me. Plus, I finally got my issue resolved!

How long did you have to wait for the callback? Is it instant or does it take a while?

It took about 2 hours for me, but that was way better than being stuck on hold all day. They give you updates on the progress too.

Here's a detailed breakdown of what you need to know about Paid Family Leave: ā¢ Eligibility: You must have paid into State Disability Insurance (SDI) in the past 5 to 18 months ā¢ Duration: Up to 8 weeks of partial pay benefits within a 12-month period ā¢ Application: Can be done online through the EDD website ā¢ Required docs: Birth certificate (for bonding), medical certification (for caregiving), etc. ā¢ Processing time: Typically 2-3 weeks, but can vary ā¢ Payment: You'll receive about 60-70% of your wages Key tips: 1. Apply as soon as you know you'll need leave 2. Keep all documentation organized and easily accessible 3. Be prepared for possible follow-up questions or requests for more info 4. If you're having trouble, don't hesitate to call or seek help from an EDD representative Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

This is great info! Quick question - do you know if the 8 weeks have to be taken consecutively or can they be spread out?

Good question! The 8 weeks don't have to be consecutive. You can spread them out within a 12-month period, which gives you some flexibility in how you use your leave.

Has anyone had experience with appealing a denied claim? I'm thinking about filing an appeal but not sure if it's worth the hassle.

I appealed mine last year and won! It was a bit of a process, but definitely worth it. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row before filing though.

Document everything, be super clear about why you think the denial was wrong, and don't be afraid to seek legal advice if you're unsure. Good luck!
