Need help updating PFL return-to-work date with EDD - going back earlier than planned
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a situation with my paid family leave claim. I originally set a return to work date, but now I've decided to go back earlier than planned. Has anyone had experience with updating their return date? I'm not sure if I need to do anything special or if it'll affect my benefits. Any advice would be appreciated!

I've been through this before. You definitely need to update your return date with the EDD. If you don't, you might end up getting overpaid and have to pay it back later. Trust me, that's a headache you don't want! 😫

Ugh, overpayments are the worst! How long did it take you to sort that out?

It took me like 3 months to get it all straightened out. Had to make so many calls, it was a nightmare 😩

Congrats on being able to return to work earlier! That's awesome. Make sure you call EDD asap to update your claim. They should be able to adjust your benefit end date.

I tried updating my return date last year and it was such a pain. Couldn't get through on the phone for days. Finally found a workaround tho. I used this site called claimyr.com - it's a calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. Costs $20 but saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Sounds too good to be true. Is it legit?

Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it worked like a charm. Saved me so much time and stress.

$20 seems steep just to make a phone call. 🤔

I get that, but think about how much time you waste trying to get through. For me, it was worth every penny.

Whatever you do, make sure you document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots, note down who you talked to, when you called, etc. The EDD can be a real pain sometimes and having a paper trail can save your butt.

It's kinda hidden. Go to your claim details, then look for 'Update Claim Information' at the bottom. Took me forever to find it too lol

Here's what you need to do: 1. Contact EDD immediately. Don't wait. 2. Explain your situation clearly - you're returning to work earlier than planned. 3. Ask them to update your claim end date. 4. If you've already been paid for days beyond your new return date, ask about the process for returning overpayments. 5. Get a confirmation number or email for the change. 6. Follow up in writing (email or through your online account) to have a record. 7. Check your claim status online after a few days to ensure the change is reflected. 8. If you run into issues, consider reaching out to your local state representative's office. They can sometimes help push things through. Remember, it's your responsibility to report changes. Failing to do so could result in overpayments or even fraud allegations. Don't stress too much though - updating return dates is a common thing and the EDD deals with it all the time. Good luck!

For real. My cousin in Canada says their system is all online and super easy to use. Why can't we have that?

Quick question - does updating your return date affect your weekly benefit amount at all? Or is it just the end date that changes?

From my experience, it only changes the end date. Your weekly amount should stay the same.

Pro tip: if you cant get through on the main line, try calling right when they open. I usually have better luck then. Also, Wednesdays seem to be less busy for some reason 🤷♂️
