Need help extending CA PFL to Oct 7 - tips for moving return date?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to extend my paid family leave and move my return date to October 7th. Has anyone gone through this process recently? Any tips or advice would be really appreciated. I'm not sure where to start or what documents I might need. Thanks in advance for any help!

I just went through this last month! It's not too bad, but there are a few steps you need to follow. First, you'll need to contact the EDD and request an extension form. Make sure you have a good reason for the extension - in my case, it was because my baby was born premature and needed extra care. Once you get the form, fill it out carefully and include any supporting documents from your doctor. Send it back ASAP because it can take a few weeks to process. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the detailed response! Do you remember how long it took for them to get back to you after you sent in the form?

It took about 3 weeks for me, but I've heard it can vary. Just make sure to send it in well before your current leave ends!

Ugh, dealing with EDD is always such a headache. I tried to extend my leave last year and it was a nightmare. Took forever to get through to anyone on the phone. Good luck, you're gonna need it! 🙄

I feel you. The whole system is a joke. I spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. 🤡

Have you guys tried using Claimyr? It's this service that calls EDD for you and connects you when they get a real person. Costs like $20 but saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

I was skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me a ton of time and stress. Worth every penny imo.

I used it last week and it worked great. Got through to EDD in like 30 minutes instead of spending all day on hold. 💯

Make sure you have all your ducks in a row before you apply for the extension. They'll want to see proof of why you need more time. I had to get a letter from my doctor explaining the medical necessity. Also, don't wait until the last minute - start the process at least a month before your current leave ends.

Pro tip: try accessing the site late at night or early morning. Less traffic = better chance of getting through.

Here's a comprehensive guide for extending your Paid Family Leave (PFL) in California: 1. Determine eligibility: Ensure you have a valid reason for extension (e.g., ongoing medical condition, bonding with newborn). 2. Gather documentation: Get a medical certification from your healthcare provider or relevant documents supporting your need for extension. 3. Contact EDD: Call the PFL office at 1-877-238-4373 or use SDI Online to request an extension. 4. Fill out forms: Complete the required extension forms accurately. Common forms include: - DE 2501F (PFL Extension Claim Form) - DE 2501FC (Continued Claim Certification) 5. Submit timely: Send your extension request at least 10 days before your current claim ends. 6. Follow up: Keep track of your claim status and respond promptly to any EDD requests for additional information. 7. Appeal if necessary: If your extension is denied, you have the right to appeal within 30 days. Remember, extensions are not guaranteed and are evaluated case-by-case. Good luck!

Just a heads up, I think the PFL number changed recently. Might wanna double-check that before calling.

Anyone else feel like the whole system is designed to make us give up? It's like they're hoping we'll just get frustrated and go back to work instead of getting the benefits we're entitled to. 😤

Preach! 🙌 I've been saying this for years. They make it so complicated on purpose.

Idk, I think it's just understaffed and underfunded. Not everything is a conspiracy lol

Maybe not a conspiracy, but definitely a broken system that needs fixing. We deserve better.

Quick question - does anyone know if extending PFL affects your job protection under CFRA/FMLA? I'm worried about losing my position if I take too much time off.

Natalie Khan
IANAL, but I believe CFRA/FMLA only guarantees 12 weeks of job protection. Anything beyond that is up to your employer's policies. Might wanna check with HR or a lawyer to be sure.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll have to have a chat with HR. Fingers crossed 🤞

Pro tip: Keep a detailed log of all your communications with EDD. Note down dates, times, names of reps you spoke to, and what was discussed. It'll save you a ton of headaches if there are any disputes later on.

My little one is having some health issues, so we need more time for treatment and recovery. Hoping EDD will understand the situation.
