ID.me lockout preventing husband's PFL baby bonding claim - need urgent workaround

We're at our wits' end here! My husband and I welcomed our daughter 2 weeks ago, and now we're stuck in this ridiculous ID.me nightmare while trying to file for his baby bonding PFL. He can't log into his ID.me account because he forgot his password, and when trying to reset it, the system demands verification through a phone number he hasn't used in YEARS. It's like hitting a brick wall repeatedly! There's zero actual human support for ID.me that we can find. We've called the EDD PFL number countless times (always disconnected) and even tried the general EDD line with no luck. Meanwhile, our savings are draining FAST with the new baby expenses. Has anyone found a way to bypass this ID.me verification issue or reached an actual human who can help? We can't even START the PFL claim process without getting through this stupid identity verification step first!

The EXACT same thing happened to my brother last year! It's infuriating how they make these systems with no backup plans. Have you tried using the ID.me recovery form? It's buried deep in their help section. You have to upload pics of your ID and do a video call verification thing. Takes forever but might work?

We found that form but it asks for the phone # on record too... which he doesn't have access to anymore. It's a complete catch-22! Did your brother eventually get it resolved?

this is actually SO common with edd/id.me... their systems never talk to eachother right. ur husband might need to create a completely new id.me acct with his current phone but then that creates other probs with edd recognizing him idk this whole system is trash

I work with PFL claims regularly, and I can tell you there are a few ways to handle this situation: 1. Your husband can request an alternative identity verification method by contacting ID.me support directly at help@id.me - specifically mention that you need to update the phone number associated with the account. 2. If that doesn't work, he can create a new ID.me account using his current phone number, but be aware this may cause issues with his EDD account linkage. 3. Most importantly, while you're working on the ID.me issue, have your husband submit a paper PFL claim form (DE 2501F) by mail to prevent further delays. The paper form doesn't require ID.me verification. You can download it from the EDD website. Don't worry about any duplicate claims - if the online application eventually works, EDD will reconcile the claims internally.

Thank you SO much! I had no idea there was a paper option that bypasses ID.me! We'll download that form immediately. We've already emailed ID.me support twice with no response, but I'll have him try again specifically asking to update the phone number. This is such helpful info!

The California EDD and their vendors like ID.me are COMPLETELY BROKEN. My husband had almost the same problem trying to get his bonding leave after our son was born. We called EDD over 50 TIMES and never got through. Total nightmare. The paper form option mentioned above might work, but expect massive delays. Have you guys tried using Claimyr? It's the only thing that worked for us after weeks of frustration. They connect you with an actual EDD agent who can help with these ID verification issues. We paid for it and got through to someone in about 20 minutes when we'd been trying for weeks. My husband explained the ID.me issue and they had a workaround. Check out their demo video (https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5) - the site is claimyr.com. Literally saved our sanity during newborn phase when we were sleep deprived and desperate!

I've never heard of this service before! Just watched their demo - it honestly looks too good to be true after all our failed attempts. Did they actually help resolve the ID.me issue specifically? That's our biggest hurdle.

Yes! The EDD rep they connected us to was able to verify my husband's identity through alternative means and noted it in his account. The rep also gave us direct instructions on how to proceed with the PFL claim despite the ID.me issue. Basically they have internal workarounds they don't advertise. Worth every penny given how much benefit money was at stake for us.

Have u tryed going to an edd office in person?? Thats what my cosin did when she had same problem after having her baby. She said the lady at the office helped her reset everything right there.

There's an actual physical EDD office we can go to?? I had no idea! Do you know where your cousin went or how to find these offices? That might actually be our best option with a newborn rather than spending hours on the phone.

most EDD offices dont handle PFL claims directly...they'll just tell u to call the same number ur already trying 🙄 waste of time w/a newborn imo

There's actually a specific procedure for ID.me recovery for EDD claims that most people don't know about. I've helped several clients through this process: 1. First, submit the paper DE 2501F form as someone suggested above - this gets your claim in the system while you work on the verification issue. 2. You need to reach the ID.me Trusted Referee team directly. Call 866-775-4363 and select the 'video chat verification' option. Explain the situation about the outdated phone number. They can manually verify your husband's identity. 3. Once verified by the Trusted Referee, request them to update the phone number on the account. They'll need to escalate to a supervisor, but they can do it. 4. After the ID.me issue is resolved, contact EDD again to ensure the claim is being processed. The key is getting to a Trusted Referee who has more permissions than regular support. They operate 24/7, so try calling during off-hours for shorter wait times.

This is INCREDIBLY helpful! I just called that number and was able to schedule a video verification for tomorrow morning. The agent confirmed they can help with the phone number update too. Thank you so much for these specific steps - this seems like exactly what we need!

Any update? Did you get the ID issue fixed? We're about to start our PFL process and I'm worried about running into the same problem!

Yes! Success! We did both approaches simultaneously. My husband did the video verification with ID.me's Trusted Referee team who updated his phone number AND we submitted the paper form. The ID.me fix worked within 24 hours and he was able to submit his claim online. We already got the confirmation email that it was received! Now just waiting for processing but at least the claim is in. Definitely try the Trusted Referee route if you have ANY issues with ID.me - they were actually very helpful once we reached a human.
