EDD disability to PFL transition stuck - receipt number but not approved after 2 weeks
I had my baby 2 weeks ago and I'm trying to transition from pregnancy disability to PFL baby bonding, but my PFL claim is still showing as 'pending' in the EDD system. When I look at my online account, I see there's a receipt number for my PFL application, but no approval yet. I'm getting anxious because my disability payments have stopped and I'm not getting any income now. Do I need to tell my doctor about this receipt number for some reason? Does my doctor need to do something else to get my PFL approved? I already had them fill out all the forms for my pregnancy disability, so I'm confused about why this transition is taking so long. Anyone else experience delays with the disability to PFL transition? It's stressful having no income with a newborn! Any advice appreciated!

No, u dont need to tell ur doctor the receipt #. That's just EDD's internal tracking number for ur PFL claim. The transition from disability to PFL can take 2-3 weeks sometimes so ur still in the normal timeframe. Just keep checking ur account daily.

•Thanks for confirming! It's so nerve-wracking waiting with bills piling up. Do you know if I'll get backpay for these weeks once it's approved?

The receipt number is just proof that EDD received your PFL claim - your doctor doesn't need this information. For the disability to PFL transition, your doctor already completed their part with the initial pregnancy disability certification. The transition delay is usually on EDD's processing side, not medical documentation. Make sure you've done these things: 1. Verified your baby's birth date is correctly entered in your PFL application 2. Confirmed your last day of disability matches the start date of your PFL claim 3. Checked that you uploaded any required birth documentation (birth certificate or hospital documentation) If your claim isn't approved by the end of week 3, I would suggest calling EDD directly to check for any issues with your claim that aren't showing online.

•Thank you for the detailed response! I double-checked all my dates and they match up correctly. I did upload the hospital discharge papers right away. I'll give it one more week before calling, but the waiting is so stressful.

I had the EXACT same issue last month!!!! It took 19 days for my PFL to get approved after disability ended and I was FREAKING OUT!!! I called like 20 times and could never get through to anyone. The online system is useless for checking status - just shows "pending" forever. BUT they did eventually approve it AND they paid me retroactively from the day after my disability ended. So you'll get all your money, it's just the waiting that SUCKS!!!

•Oh thank goodness they paid you retroactively! That's my biggest worry right now. 19 days sounds like torture though. I'm on day 14 of waiting and already feeling desperate.

Has anyone else noticed how the EDD system ALWAYS creates these gaps between disability and PFL? It's by design I swear. They create these 2-3 week delays so they can hold onto our money longer. I had this exact issue with both my kids. First time took 3 weeks, second time almost 4 weeks for the transition. And notice how there's NEVER any explanation or timeframe provided? It's cruel to new mothers who need income the most right after giving birth. The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

•Happened to my sister too last year. She was about to take out a loan before it finally got approved. The worst part is nobody can tell you why it's delayed or how much longer it will take!

I spent years processing claims for EDD (I'm retired now) and I can tell you that the receipt number is simply confirmation that your claim was received in the system. Your doctor doesn't need this number. The transition from disability to PFL typically takes 10-14 business days (so about 2-3 weeks total) because it requires manual review. The computer system treats them as separate claims that need to be linked correctly in the database. Right now, you're right at the typical processing time. Make sure you've submitted your baby's birth documentation. That's the #1 reason for delays in PFL baby bonding approval. Your claim will be backdated to the day after your disability ended, so you won't lose any benefits during this gap.

•Thank you so much for the insider perspective! That makes me feel better knowing I'm still within the normal timeframe. Yes, I submitted the birth documentation right away. I'll try to be patient for another week.

If you're really worried, you should try Claimyr to get through to an EDD agent directly. I was in the same boat last month - stuck in transition limbo for almost 2 weeks. I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me through to an actual person at EDD in about 20 minutes. The agent was able to look at my file and tell me exactly what was happening with my claim and when to expect approval. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 I was skeptical at first but it saved me from constant anxiety-checking my account every hour!

•Thanks for the tip! I might try that if it goes another week with no movement. It would be worth it just to get a straight answer about what's happening with my claim.

•Is this service legit? I've seen it mentioned before but was worried it might be a scam.

•Yes, it's legitimate. They basically use technology to navigate the EDD phone system for you and get you in the callback queue. You still talk directly to EDD staff - they just help you get through the impossible phone system. Saved me days of redial frustration.

Just wanted to add - if you're experiencing financial hardship while waiting, call EDD and specifically mention that you're facing financial hardship due to the delay. In some cases, they can flag your claim for expedited processing. This won't work for everyone, but it's worth trying if you're in a difficult situation.

•I didn't know that was an option! I'll definitely mention the financial hardship if I can get through to someone. Thank you!

Btw, I forgot to say in my first comment - MAKE SURE you check your spam/junk folder for emails from EDD!! They sent me an email saying they needed additional info but it went to my spam folder and I didn't see it for a week which caused even more delays!! Check your spam folder daily!!

•Oh! Great reminder - just checked my spam folder and thankfully nothing from EDD in there. I'll keep checking it though!

when did ur disability officially end? sometimes people think there's a gap but actually their disability claim is still active for a few days after they think it ended.

•My disability ended exactly 2 weeks ago - my doctor put my recovery date as 6 weeks postpartum, and that date was 14 days ago. My last disability payment covered up to that date.

Based on everyone's experiences here, it sounds like you're still within the normal processing timeframe. The system will backdate your PFL benefits to begin the day after your disability ended, so you won't lose any money during this gap. One thing to prepare for: when your PFL is finally approved, you'll likely receive all the backdated payments at once. This sometimes confuses people because they see a larger deposit than they expected. Just be aware this is normal - it's covering the full period since your disability ended. I hope your claim gets processed soon!

•Thank you! That makes sense about the lump sum payment. I'll be prepared for that. I appreciate everyone's help and experiences - makes me feel much less alone in dealing with this!
