EDD PFL application 'received' but no updates - why does it mention benefit card?

I'm so confused about my PFL status after having my baby 6 weeks ago! I mailed in my baby bonding application over a month ago and have heard NOTHING from EDD since then. When I called the automated system last week and entered my SSN, it only said 'application received on 4/2/2025' with no other info. Called again today and got a weird message saying 'your benefit card expires in 3 years' - what does that even mean? I haven't even been approved or received a card! Has anyone dealt with this weird limbo status? How do I check if I'm actually approved? My bank account is getting seriously low and I need this money to pay rent next month. Help!

Same thing happened to me in February! The benefit card message is actually good news - it means your claim was approved, but they never sent you any notification. Check your mail carefully for the next few days - you should receive your EDD debit card soon. They're terrible about communicating status updates.

Wait seriously?? They approve you without telling you? That's so strange! So I should just wait for a card in the mail? I've been checking my informed delivery preview every day and haven't seen anything from EDD coming.

Thank you!! That's a relief to hear. I'll keep checking the mail. So weird they don't just TELL you you're approved!

YOU GOT APPROVED!!!!! But this is literally EXACTLY why I hate EDD so much. They NEVER tell you anything directly. They set up this dumb system where you have to decode weird automated messages instead of just TELLING PEOPLE their status. I had 3 kids and went through this nonsense every time. The benefit card message means you're approved, but honestly who would know that? Not a first time mom dealing with a newborn and no sleep!!!!

Right?? I'm running on like 3 hours of broken sleep and trying to decode these cryptic messages. Would it kill them to send a simple "You're approved" text or email? So frustrating!

The benefit card message is actually confirmation that your claim was approved. When EDD approves your Paid Family Leave claim, they automatically set up your EDD debit card which is valid for 3 years. The fact you're getting that message means your application was processed successfully. You should receive your EDD debit card in the mail within 7-10 business days from Bank of America. The first payment should be loaded onto the card shortly after you receive it. If you don't receive anything within 10 business days, you should call EDD directly to confirm your mailing address is correct in their system. You can also check your claim status online by creating an account at edd.ca.gov if you haven't already. This will show your claim details, payment history, and you can set up direct deposit to your personal bank account instead of using the debit card.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I did try to check online but when I registered it showed my claim as "received" with no other information. I'll keep checking that too in case it updates. How long after approval until the first payment usually gets loaded on the card?

Generally, once your card arrives, the first payment is either already loaded or will be within 1-2 business days. Some people receive their first payment the same day they get their card, while others may wait a few days. If your online account still shows just "received" status, that's typical EDD inconsistency - their phone system and online system don't always sync up immediately. The phone message about your benefit card is the more current information. Once you get your card, I recommend setting up direct deposit to your personal bank account through the Bank of America EDD debit card website. It's much more convenient than using the actual card.

When I had my baby in 2023 I got the card but never got a PENNY deposited!!! Had to call them like 20 times and each time they said it wuld be fixed in 24 hrs. Took 3 WEEKS! Make sure you check the card has $ on it!

I had so much trouble reaching anyone at EDD when I was on maternity leave last year. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual human at EDD in like 20 minutes instead of calling for days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 It seriously saved my sanity because I needed to confirm my card was actually coming and that my address was correct. Turns out EDD had my old apartment number on file even though I updated it on my application!

That's actually really good to know - I might need this if my card doesn't show up soon. I've moved in the last year so now I'm paranoid they have my old address. Was it easy to use?

Super easy! They just call EDD for you and connect you when they reach an agent. Saved me hours of redial frustration. Definitely worth it if you need to check your address or payment status.

The EDD debit card message means your PFL claim has been approved, but there's a specific process to follow now. Here's what's happening: 1. Your PFL baby bonding claim has been processed and approved 2. EDD has authorized Bank of America to issue you a debit card 3. Bank of America will mail this card to your address on file 4. Your benefits will be loaded onto this card 5. The card is valid for 3 years (which explains the message) Important steps to take: - Watch for a plain envelope from Bank of America in the next 5-7 business days - Once received, activate the card immediately by calling the number on the sticker - Set up online access to manage your card at prepaid.bankofamerica.com/eddcard - Consider setting up direct deposit from your card to your personal bank account The online account might still show "received" status temporarily - the systems don't always update simultaneously. The benefit card message from the phone system is confirmation of approval.

I got so confused cuz PFL and SDI use the same card... I had pregnancy disability first then baby bonding and thought I'd get a new card but the money just went on my existing card. Made me panic for DAYS

Update: You were all right!! My debit card came in the mail today in a very plain envelope that I almost threw away. I've activated it and there's already money on it! Such a relief. I'm going to set up direct deposit to my regular bank account as suggested. Thanks everyone for helping this sleep-deprived new mom figure this out! The EDD seriously needs to improve their communication system though!

So glad it worked out! The EDD system is so unnecessarily confusing. Enjoy your baby bonding time!

CONGRATS!!! Now just make sure you keep certifying every 2 weeks if they ask you to! That's another thing they don't explain well! 🙄
