SDI only paid 6 weeks instead of 8 for c-section - help!

Hey everyone, I'm having trouble with my disability pay after having a c-section. I filed my claim in December and my baby was born on the 9th. I think I should have gotten 8 weeks of disability pay, but I've only received 6 weeks so far. Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm trying to get this sorted out before I file for PFL bonding. Any advice?

Ugh, I feel your pain! I went through something similar last year. Have you tried calling EDD? They might be able to explain why you're missing those two weeks.

I've been trying to call them for days but can never get through 😫 It's so frustrating!

Pro tip: call right when they open. I got through after only 20 minutes on hold that way.

lol good luck with that. EDD phone lines are a joke 🤡

Congrats on your baby! 🎉 As for the disability pay, you're right - you should be getting 8 weeks for a c-section. Here's what you need to do: 1. Double-check your claim start date. It should be the day of your c-section. 2. Make sure your doctor submitted the correct paperwork indicating it was a c-section. 3. If everything looks correct on your end, you'll need to contact EDD to ask about the missing weeks. 4. Keep all your documentation handy when you call. 5. Don't wait too long to resolve this before starting your PFL claim. Hope this helps! Let us know how it goes.

This is great advice. I wish I had known all this when I had my kiddo last year!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous, we shouldn't have to pay for basic customer service 😤

I get the skepticism, but after spending hours trying to get through, it was worth it for me. Saved me a ton of time and stress.

How long did you have to wait once they called you back?

0 coins

It took about 2 hours, but I just went about my day and they called when an agent was ready. Way better than being stuck on hold!

have you checked your EDD account online? sometimes they update info there before sending out notices

This happened to me too! Turns out they had my return-to-work date wrong. Double check all your dates in the system.

Oh wow, I'll definitely look into that. Thanks for the tip!

the whole system is broken af. good luck getting any help from EDD 🙄

Preach 🙌 I've been dealing with them for months and still no resolution

It's not that bad if you know how to navigate it. Just gotta be persistent!

Quick question - did you have any complications or need to extend your leave? Sometimes that can affect the payment schedule.

0 coins

Nope, everything was pretty standard. That's why I'm so confused about the missing weeks.

idk if this helps, but I had a similar issue and it turned out to be a glitch in their system. Had to file an appeal to get it fixed. what a headache 😫

Have you tried reaching out to your local assembly member's office? They can sometimes help push things through with EDD.

This! 👆 My cousin did this and got her issue resolved in like a week.

I hadn't even thought of that. Great idea, thanks!

I went through the exact same thing with my c-section delivery! Definitely check that your doctor submitted form DE 2501 with the correct delivery method marked as "cesarean section." Sometimes they accidentally mark it as vaginal delivery which only qualifies for 6 weeks instead of 8. Also, make sure your claim start date is actually the day you delivered, not when you went on leave beforehand. I had to submit additional documentation from my OB to get those extra 2 weeks retroactively paid. It took about 3 weeks to process once I got the right paperwork in. Don't give up - you're entitled to those 8 weeks! 💪

This is super helpful! I didn't even know about form DE 2501 - I'll definitely check with my doctor to make sure they submitted the right form with c-section marked correctly. It's so frustrating that these little details can cause such big problems with payments. Thanks for sharing your experience and giving me hope that I can get this sorted out! 🙏

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this stress on top of having a newborn! I had a similar issue last year - turns out my doctor's office had submitted the wrong disability code. For c-sections, they need to use a specific code that indicates surgical delivery, not just "childbirth." I'd recommend calling your OB's office first to confirm they submitted the correct paperwork showing it was a c-section. If that's all correct, then definitely pursue the EDD route. Also, keep detailed records of everything - dates, who you spoke with, reference numbers, etc. It'll save you time if you need to escalate. Wishing you the best of luck getting this resolved quickly! 🤞

This is exactly the kind of detailed advice I needed! I never realized there were specific codes for surgical delivery vs regular childbirth. I'll call my OB's office tomorrow to double-check what they submitted. The record-keeping tip is gold too - I wish I had started doing that from day one. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, it really helps to know I'm not alone in dealing with this mess! 🙏

I'm a new mom dealing with this exact same issue! Just wanted to add that you should also double-check if your claim includes any "pre-delivery" disability days. Sometimes EDD counts those toward your total 8 weeks, which can be confusing. I learned this the hard way when I thought I was missing weeks but it turned out they had already paid me for some bed rest time before delivery. Also, if you do end up needing to appeal or resubmit paperwork, don't let it delay filing for PFL - you can run them concurrently as long as the dates don't overlap. Hope you get this sorted out soon! Being a new parent is hard enough without EDD drama 😅

Oh wow, I hadn't thought about pre-delivery days being counted toward the total! That could totally explain what happened. I did have some complications toward the end that required me to stop working a few days before delivery, so maybe those days are already included in my 6 weeks. I'll definitely check my claim details to see if that's the case. And thanks for the heads up about running SDI and PFL concurrently - that's really good to know since I was worried about timing everything perfectly. This community has been such a lifesaver with all the helpful advice! 💕

Hey Aisha! First off, congrats on your little one! 🎉 I just went through this exact situation a few months ago. You're absolutely right that c-sections should get 8 weeks of SDI, not 6. Here's what worked for me: 1. Log into your EDD account online and check if your claim shows "cesarean delivery" or just "normal delivery" - this is crucial! 2. Contact your doctor's office ASAP to confirm they submitted form DE 2501 with the correct delivery method marked 3. If they marked it wrong, have them resubmit with "cesarean section" clearly indicated 4. Keep copies of EVERYTHING - your discharge papers, doctor notes, anything showing it was a c-section I had to wait about 2-3 weeks for the correction to process, but I did get those missing 2 weeks paid retroactively. Don't let EDD's phone system discourage you - keep trying or use one of the callback services mentioned above. You've got this mama! 💪
