SDI Maternity Leave Payments Delayed: 36 Weeks Pregnant, No Money, Claim Pending for a Month - Help!
I'm freaking out! I've been on maternity leave for almost a month and haven't received any payments from SDI yet. My doctor took me off work when I was 36 weeks pregnant, and I submitted my claim right away. The online status just says "pending processing." I'm about to have this baby any day now, and I'm completely broke. Has anyone else dealt with this? How long did it take for you to get your first payment? I'm worried there might be a problem with my application. Any advice on how to speed things up or at least get an update?

Ugh, I feel your pain! I went through the same thing last year. It took them almost 6 weeks to process my claim and start payments. The system is so slow and frustrating. Hang in there!

6 weeks is an eternity when you need the money. Did you ever find out why it took so long?

It might also be useful to contact advocacy groups focused on workers' rights or parental leave. They might have resources or advice for dealing with SDI issues.

That's a great idea. I wouldn't have thought of that!

Here's what you need to do: 1. Keep checking your online account daily for updates. 2. Try calling first thing in the morning when they open. 3. If you can't get through, send a message through your online account. 4. Make sure all your documents are in order and uploaded correctly. 5. If you're really desperate, contact your local state representative. They can sometimes help speed things up. Remember, the system is slow, but they usually backpay from the date your claim was filed. Hang in there!

This is solid advice. I'd add: document EVERYTHING. Every call, every message, every update. It might come in handy later.

Following up with your state rep can actually work. They have more influence than you'd think.

Hey, just a heads up - make sure you're ready for when the payments do start. They might send a debit card instead of direct deposit. I didn't know and almost threw mine away thinking it was junk mail!

I coped by setting some savings aside, but it's easier said than done. Wish there was a better answer.

Have you tried calling them? Sometimes you can get more info if you actually talk to a person. It's a pain to get through, but it might be worth it.

Good luck with that. I spent hours on hold and never got through. The phone system is a joke.

Pro tip: call right when they open. You might have a better chance of getting through.

I agree with calling first thing. Sometimes I've had luck by calling a few minutes before they officially open and waiting on the line.

Have you checked if there are any missing documents or information they need? Sometimes they don't tell you if something's missing and just let the claim sit there.

This is so true. I found out they were missing a document only after weeks of waiting. Double-check everything.

Hot take: the whole system is designed to be confusing and slow on purpose. They hope people will just give up.

Idk about that. Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence.

I think it's more about budget cuts and bureaucracy than intentional sabotage.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken.

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

I tried Claimyr too, and it worked, but I do wish there was a free alternative. The system should be more accessible.

I'm in the same boat, girl. 38 weeks pregnant and still waiting on my first payment. This stress can't be good for the baby. Sending you virtual hugs! ❤️
