Got a note to extend SDI disability - what's the process like now?

Hey everyone, I just got a note saying I need to extend my disability. Has anyone gone through this process recently? I'm not sure what steps I need to take or how long it might take. Any advice would be really appreciated!

I went through this last month. It's not too bad, but there are a few steps: 1. Fill out the extension form they sent you 2. Get your doctor to complete their portion 3. Submit everything back to EDD 4. Wait... and wait some more It took about 3 weeks for me to hear back after submitting everything. Good luck!

3 weeks?! You're lucky. I've been waiting for 2 months now 😭

Did you have to provide any additional medical records with your extension request?

@profile 3 - Yeah, my doc had to fill out a form explaining why I needed more time. Nothing too crazy tho

ugh, extending disability is such a pain. i swear they make it difficult on purpose 🙄

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone about this! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work?

I was skeptical too, but yeah it actually does. Saved me hours of hold time

$20 seems steep just to make a phone call...

@profile 7 I thought so too, but considering how much time I wasted trying to get through before, it was worth it for me

make sure you dont miss any deadlines! i messed up and had to start the whole process over again 😫

Oh no, that sounds awful! Do you remember what the deadline was?

I think it was like 10 days after I got the notice? Not 100% sure tho, so def double check!

Has anyone else noticed that the EDD website is always down when you need it most? 🤦‍♂️

EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. 😤

Pro tip: try accessing the site late at night or early morning. Less traffic = better chance of it working

Just a heads up, they changed some of the rules for extensions last month. Make sure you check the latest requirements on the EDD site!

wat did they change? im about to apply for an extension too

I think they added some new medical certification requirements. Def worth checking out the details on their site

How did they extend your SDI if you exhausted all your benefits? Meaning there's no more money from your claim. Help!

@Leah Hamilton That s'a great question! From what I understand, if you ve'exhausted your SDI benefits, you might need to look into other options like applying for a new claim if you ve'had a different medical condition, or potentially transitioning to other programs. Have you tried calling EDD to ask about your specific situation? They should be able to tell you if there are any options available for your case.

I'm going through this process right now too! One thing I learned is to make copies of everything before you send it in - apparently documents sometimes get "lost" in their system. Also, if your doctor is slow with paperwork like mine, give them the forms ASAP because that seems to be the biggest bottleneck. Thanks for posting this question, really helpful to see everyone's experiences!

@Benjamin Kim Great advice about making copies! I learned that the hard way on my first claim. Also totally agree about the doctor bottleneck - mine took forever to fill out the forms. Do you know if there s'a specific timeframe doctors are supposed to complete the paperwork by? Just curious if I can nudge mine along if needed 😅
