EDD took $6000+ from tax refund for $1000 disability overpayment - How to fix?
Has anyone else had issues with EDD taking way too much from their tax refund for disability overpayment? They took over $6000 from me when I only owed about $1000. I've called multiple times and they keep saying it's resolved, but clearly it's not. How do I get them to fix this and give me back the money they basically stole?

Ugh, classic EDD nonsense. I had a similar issue last year. It took me MONTHS to get it sorted out. Here's what worked for me: 1. Document everything. Every call, every letter, every interaction. 2. File a formal appeal. There should be instructions on how to do this on your overpayment notice. 3. Contact your local state representative. Sometimes they can light a fire under EDD's butt. 4. If all else fails, consider seeking legal advice. There are some non-profits that specialize in EDD issues. Good luck, OP. The system is broken, but don't give up!

β’This is solid advice. I'd add that you should also request a breakdown of how they calculated the overpayment. Sometimes they make mistakes in the math.

β’Contacting my state rep was a game-changer for me. They have staff dedicated to helping with state agency issues.

β’Thanks for the detailed advice! I'll definitely start documenting everything. Do you remember how long it took for your state rep to respond?

β’For me, it took about 2 weeks to hear back from my rep's office. But once they got involved, things moved pretty quickly. Hang in there!

β’Fr fr, EDD needs to get their act together. It's like they're playing darts with our money π―πΈ

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

β’Sounds sketchy. Is it legit? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

β’I was skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth it if you're desperate to talk to someone.

β’How long did it take for them to get someone on the line?

β’It took about 2 hours for me, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. They just called me when an agent was on the line.

Have you tried going to an EDD office in person? Sometimes face-to-face interactions can get better results than phone calls.

This happened to my cousin last year. He ended up having to hire a lawyer to threaten legal action before EDD finally fixed it. It's ridiculous that it has to come to that. π€

β’A lawyer? Jeez, that's extreme. How much did that cost him?

β’He found one who worked on contingency, so he only had to pay if they won. Still a hassle tho

pro tip: always keep copies of EVERYTHING you send to EDD. I learned that the hard way when they "lost" my appeal paperwork π

Anyone else notice that these issues seem to be happening more frequently lately? I wonder if there's been a change in their system or staff.

β’I heard they implemented a new software system last year. Probably buggy af ππ»

β’Could be understaffing too. My friend works for the state (not EDD) and says everyone's overworked since the pandemic.

Hey OP, make sure you check if this overpayment is affecting your credit score too. Sometimes these gov mistakes can really mess things up.

β’Oh man, I didn't even think about that. Thanks for the heads up! π°

unpopular opinion: maybe we should just get rid of EDD altogether and start from scratch. this system is beyond repair at this point π€·ββοΈ

β’And replace it with what? As bad as EDD is, having no safety net would be worse.

β’How about we model it after unemployment systems in other countries? Some European countries seem to have their act together.
