EDD SDI payments stopped after medical exam - only received 7 days instead of full backpay

I'm so frustrated with EDD right now and not sure what to do. I've been on disability since early January 2025 for severe back issues after a work incident. My payments were coming regularly until mid-March, then they suddenly stopped with no explanation. After 3 weeks of radio silence, I got a letter scheduling me for an EDD medical examination. I attended the exam on April 12th, and the doctor seemed to agree my condition was legitimate (herniated disc with nerve impingement). The very next day, I received ONE payment covering March 15-21 (just 7 days), but nothing for the remaining 21+ days they owe me. My benefit amount is $1,450/week, so they're holding back over $4,300 I desperately need for medical bills and rent. Has anyone dealt with this partial payment situation after a medical exam? Shouldn't they have processed ALL my backpay at once? I'm confused why they'd send just one week. My online account shows all certifications as "received" but with no explanation for the missing payments. I've called about 30 times but can't get through to a human being.

This is a classic EDD partial payment situation. After a medical exam, they often release one week as a "good faith" payment while they finish processing the rest of your claim. It's frustrating but normal. The examiner needs to complete their report and send it to your claims adjuster, who then needs to approve the remaining payments. This can take 7-14 business days after your exam. Your remaining payments should be coming soon, but keep checking your account daily.

Thank you! That at least explains what's happening. Do you know if there's any way to check the status of the examiner's report? My online account doesn't show anything about pending reviews or what's causing the delay for the other weeks.

omg this happened to me in february!!! they made me see their doctor and then only paid me for like 5 days. i had to wait almost 3 weeks to get the rest of my money. edd is the WORST. hang in there!!!

3 weeks?! I can't wait that long... I have rent due next week. Did they at least pay you everything they owed eventually? Did you have to keep calling?

The system is designed to frustrate us into giving up. After my medical exam last year, they deliberately withheld 75% of my backpay for FIVE WEEKS hoping I'd just go back to work. They ALWAYS claim it's "processing time" but that's complete BS. Those examiners file their reports within 48 hours - EDD just sits on the money because they can. You have to FIGHT for every penny you're entitled to receive. Call them every single day until someone helps you.

While I understand your frustration, this information isn't entirely accurate. The examiners are often backlogged and reports can take 5-7 business days. Then the claims adjusters, who are handling hundreds of claims, need time to review and approve. It's not a perfect system, but it's not a conspiracy to withhold benefits either.

I had a somewhat similar situation back in January. Got sent to their doctor, then got a partial payment. When I finally reached someone, they told me there was a "pending review" flag on my account that wasn't visible on the customer portal. The rest of my payments came through about 10 days later with no further action from me.

That gives me some hope! I guess I'll wait another week before truly panicking. I just wish they would communicate better about what's happening with our claims.

After an EDD medical exam, there's a specific process that happens: 1. The examiner has 5 business days to submit their report 2. A claims specialist reviews the report against your original medical certification 3. If approved, payments are released (sometimes in batches rather than all at once) The partial payment is actually a good sign - it means your claim wasn't denied. For the fastest resolution, you need to speak with a Tier 2 claims specialist. Regular customer service reps can't help with post-examination payment issues. I recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to EDD quickly. They have a system that gets you past the busy signals and connects you directly with an agent, usually within 20-30 minutes. I was skeptical but their video demo convinced me: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Ask specifically for a "claim review status update following medical examination" when you get through.

EDD should provide better customer service WITHOUT us having to pay some third-party service! It's ridiculous we have to resort to this just to access benefits we've already paid into through our taxes!

Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes much more sense than what the EDD website shows. I'll check out that service - at this point I'd pay anything just to talk to a real person who can explain what's happening with my claim.

r u sure ur certification was done right for ALL the weeks? sometimes people forget to certify for some weeks and only get paid for the ones they did right. check ur account again and make sure all weeks show as "received" not "pending" or "incomplete

Yes, I double checked all my certifications. Everything shows as "received" for all weeks. That's why it's so confusing that they only paid me for one week!

I went through this exact scenario in March. After my medical exam, they released one week's payment, then nothing for almost 3 weeks. I called every day (took about 75 attempts before getting through). Here's what I learned: After an EDD medical exam, your claim gets flagged for a "continuing eligibility review." This isn't visible in your online account. The partial payment is actually standard procedure - they release the most recent week while reviewing the rest. When I finally reached a claims specialist, they were able to manually release my remaining payments on the spot. The key is asking for a "post-examination payment review" when you reach an agent. Call early (8:01 AM) or during lunch (12:30-1:15 PM) for the best chance of getting through. Keep trying!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! This is incredibly helpful. I'll try calling during the times you suggested. Did you have to provide any additional documentation when you finally reached someone?

No additional documentation was needed. Just have your claim ID and last 4 of SSN ready. The specialist can see the exam results in their system. Good luck!

My cousin works at EDD (not disability but unemployment) and she says their computer system for disability is ancient and runs batched processes that sometimes split payments for no logical reason. It might not even be a review holding things up - could just be their terrible system. Either way, calling is your only option.

This is partially true. The SDI payment system does run on older technology with batch processing, but medical exam reviews are a manual process requiring human review. The system limitations can cause delays, but in this case it's more likely the standard post-examination review process.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD this morning! You were all right - the single week payment was a standard procedure while they reviewed my case. The agent confirmed my medical exam was approved but said there was a "payment processing delay" affecting the backpay. She manually released all my payments and said I should see the money in 24-48 hours. Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

That's awesome! So glad you got it resolved. How did you finally get through to them?

I used the Claimyr service that someone recommended above. It was worth every penny - got me connected to an agent in about 25 minutes after struggling for weeks on my own. Such a relief to have this resolved before rent is due!

Congratulations on getting this resolved! Your experience is really helpful for others going through the same thing. It's frustrating that EDD doesn't explain their post-examination payment process clearly on their website or in their communications. A simple notice saying "partial payment released while case under final review" would save everyone so much stress and confusion. At least now we know the single week payment is actually a positive sign, not something to panic about. Thanks for updating us with the resolution!
