EDD SDI payment delay after doctor submitted new medical info - still waiting after 3 days

Has anyone experienced longer payment delays recently after their doctor submitted new medical info to EDD? Usually, when I get the notification that 'new medical information received,' I see a payment the next day. But it's been THREE DAYS now and still nothing in my account! The return-to-work date updated in my portal right away, but the payment section hasn't changed at all. I'm getting really anxious because my rent is due next week and I was counting on this payment. My claim is for a herniated disc (L4-L5) that's kept me out since February 12th. Is this a new processing delay with EDD or should I be worried something's wrong with my claim? Called the customer service line twice but just got the dreaded 'high call volume' message and disconnected both times.

mine took 5 days last month after the medical update... things are slow right now i think. they're probably backed up with all the tax season stuff going on too

Thanks for letting me know! Did yours eventually just show up, or did you have to call them? I'm trying to figure out if I need to keep attempting to reach someone.

The normal processing time for medical certification updates has extended to 3-5 business days recently. EDD implemented system updates in March 2025 that have temporarily slowed down some payment processing. If your return-to-work date updated successfully, that's actually a good sign - it means the medical information was properly received and input into the system. The payment processing is just on a separate timeline now. I would recommend waiting one more business day before becoming concerned. If tomorrow passes with no payment, there are a few steps you can take: 1. Check your payment history for any status changes (sometimes payments are processed but not immediately reflected in your account balance) 2. Look for any new messages in your SDI Online inbox about certification issues 3. Verify your payment method is still current (direct deposit information, etc.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I didn't know about the system updates. I'll check for messages in my SDI inbox - I always forget about that separate messaging system. My direct deposit info hasn't changed, so hopefully it's just the new slower timeline.

did u check if ur bank is having delays?? sometimes my bank holds the edd deposits for an extra day even tho edd says they sent it. just another thing to look into

That's a good point! I'll contact my bank too. I use a credit union and sometimes they do take longer to process government deposits.

THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME LAST WEEK!!! First they took FOREVER to process my initial claim (almost 3 weeks), then when my doctor sent updated info it took 4 MORE DAYS for the payment to hit my account. I swear EDD is deliberately making this harder on everyone. My claim is for pregnancy disability and I've had nothing but problems. Every person I talk to gives me different information too. Such a broken system!!!

The payment delays are frustrating, but they're not deliberate - just a result of outdated systems and understaffing. Pregnancy disability claims actually go through a slightly different process than standard SDI claims. For pregnancy claims, they verify the expected delivery date against the certification dates, which can add processing time. Did your payment eventually arrive without having to call?

Yeah it did finally come through but it was stressful waiting! I didn't know pregnancy claims were processed differently - no one at EDD told me that. Everything about this system is so confusing.

when my doctor sent in my extension paperwork, it took them 6 days to pay me. but my sister got paid right away after her medical certification. i think it depends on what kind of claim u have and how busy they are. back problems probably take longer because they have to review them more carefully??? idk just guessing

You're partially correct. The review timeframe can vary based on the medical condition and claim type. Extension requests generally undergo more scrutiny than routine certifications. Back injuries like herniated discs may receive additional review because they're common and EDD wants to verify the proper recovery timeline. Standard certifications for clear-cut conditions like post-surgical recovery often process faster.

If you need to reach an EDD representative to check on your payment status, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation last month - payment delay after medical info update and couldn't get through on the phone. Claimyr got me connected with an actual EDD agent in about 25 minutes instead of spending days trying to call. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The agent I spoke with was able to manually verify that my medical certification was properly recorded and explained exactly when my payment would process. Saved me days of stress and uncertainty.

Thank you for suggesting this! I've never heard of Claimyr before. If my payment doesn't show up by tomorrow, I'll definitely try this service. The peace of mind would be worth it at this point.

does that service really work? seems sketchy to me... has anyone else tried it?

I used it twice during my disability claim last year. It's legit - they basically navigate the phone system and wait on hold for you, then call you when they get an agent. Saved me hours of frustration.

Just to update everyone on current EDD SDI payment timelines for 2025: • Initial claims: 10-14 calendar days (previously 7-10 days) • Routine certifications: 1-3 business days • Medical updates: 3-5 business days • Extension requests: 5-7 business days • Appeals or special reviews: 10-21 business days The system update they implemented in March was supposed to speed things up, but it's actually caused temporary delays as staff adjust to the new procedures. My contact at EDD says they expect to return to faster processing times by June.

good to know! i have to file an extension next month so i'll plan for that 5-7 day wait 👍

This is SO helpful! I wish EDD would post these timelines clearly on their website. Would save everyone a lot of anxiety. Thank you!

I'm having the exact same issue but with my PFL claim after bonding with my new baby. They keep saying new information received but nothing happens after that. The whole system is a joke.

Just a friendly clarification - Paid Family Leave (PFL) and State Disability Insurance (SDI) use the same payment system but are processed by different departments within EDD. PFL claims for bonding have been experiencing longer delays (currently 7-10 days for updates) because of the high volume of claims. The "new information received" notification means they got your documents, but PFL requires additional verification steps that SDI doesn't.

UPDATE: My payment finally showed up this morning! So it took exactly 4 business days after the medical info was received. Thanks everyone for the information and support - it really helped ease my anxiety while waiting. I'm going to bookmark this thread in case I run into delays with future certifications.

Glad you got paid! The waiting game is THE WORST. Hope your back heals up soon!

Great news! Thanks for updating the thread - it's helpful for others to see the actual timeline. For your herniated disc recovery, make sure any future medical updates from your doctor are submitted at least 5-7 days before you need the payment to ensure continuous benefits.

So glad to hear your payment came through @Dmitry! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - doctor submitted updated medical info for my knee surgery recovery on Tuesday and still waiting. This thread has been incredibly helpful in managing my expectations. It's frustrating that EDD doesn't communicate these processing delays clearly, but at least we have this community to share real experiences. The 3-5 business day timeline for medical updates seems to be the new normal unfortunately.

Hey Leo! Tuesday to now would put you at about 3 business days, so you're right in that expected timeframe. Knee surgery recovery claims usually go pretty smoothly once they get the updated info processed. Have you checked your SDI inbox for any messages? Sometimes they send updates there before the payment actually hits. Fingers crossed yours comes through tomorrow!

@Leo I'm in a similar boat with my workers comp to SDI transition - submitted new medical certification on Wednesday and still waiting. It's reassuring to see others experiencing the same delays and that payments do eventually come through. The uncertainty is definitely the hardest part, especially when you're counting on that money for bills. Hope both of us see our payments hit soon!

This whole thread has been so helpful to read through! I'm currently waiting on a payment after my doctor submitted updated info for my anxiety/depression claim on Wednesday, so seeing everyone's timelines gives me hope. The 3-5 business day window seems consistent across different types of claims. One thing I learned from calling EDD last week (took 2 hours on hold) is that they prioritize processing based on how close you are to running out of benefits. So if you're early in your claim period, you might wait the full 5 days, but if you're near the end of your benefit period, they expedite it. Just wanted to share that info in case it helps anyone else manage their expectations!

0 coins

That's really valuable information about the prioritization system! I had no idea they expedite processing based on benefit period timing. That actually explains why some people get payments faster than others even with the same type of claim. Thanks for sharing what you learned from that long hold time - those insights from actual EDD staff are gold. Hope your anxiety/depression claim payment comes through soon. Mental health claims can be especially stressful when you're already dealing with the condition itself.

0 coins

Wow, that prioritization system explains so much! I was wondering why my friend got her payment in 2 days while mine took 4 - she was on week 10 of her claim while I was only on week 3. Mental health claims can definitely be extra challenging when you're already stressed about finances on top of managing your condition. Have you found the EDD portal shows any status updates before the actual payment hits, or does it just appear without warning?
