EDD SDI effective date change during pregnancy - employment end date extended

I'm 28 weeks pregnant and recently got notice I was being laid off. My doctor put me on disability due to pregnancy complications (gestational diabetes and high blood pressure), so I filed for SDI thinking Friday would be my last work day. My claim status currently shows 'pending medical certification' - I've already requested Kaiser send the disability paperwork directly to EDD. But now HR just informed me they're EXTENDING my employment until next Wednesday (5 more days). I panicked and went into my EDD account to request a change in the effective date of my claim. Did I mess everything up? Will this delay my payments even more? I'm worried about having a gap between my last paycheck and when SDI kicks in. Has anyone gone through something similar with changing their effective date? I'm so stressed about finances with the baby coming and now I'm worried I've created a paperwork nightmare.

when i went on pregnancy disability they actually told me to start my claim AFTER my last day of work. ur supposed to file with the effective date being the first day ur gonna miss work due to disability, not before. so changing the date was the right move! otherwise u would've had a problem with overlapping employment income & SDI benefits.

That makes me feel a lot better! I was so worried I'd screwed everything up. Do you think this will delay processing my claim? I'm already stressed about how long it might take.

You did exactly the right thing by changing the effective date. Your SDI benefits cannot begin until after your last day of employment, so adjusting this prevented a potential overpayment situation. Your claim is still showing 'pending medical certification' because Kaiser needs to submit your physician's certification directly to EDD. This is standard procedure and typically takes 5-10 business days from when Kaiser receives your request. Once both pieces are in place (your claim with the correct start date and the medical certification), EDD should begin processing your pregnancy disability claim. The current processing time is approximately 14-21 days, but it can vary depending on their workload. Make sure Kaiser has the correct claim ID number when they submit your documentation!

Isn't there a waiting period too? I thought for SDI you don't get paid for the first week. So if her last day is next Wednesday, she won't actually get benefits until the following Wednesday? That really messes with budgeting.

There is indeed a 7-day waiting period for SDI benefits, including pregnancy disability. This waiting period begins from your effective date (first day of disability after employment ends). You won't receive benefits for this first week, and payments would start from the 8th day of your disability period. Regarding your original question - changing the effective date was absolutely necessary and won't delay your claim any more than the standard processing time. The key factor now is making sure Kaiser submits your medical certification promptly. Have you confirmed they received your request to send documentation to EDD?

I called Kaiser after submitting the request and they confirmed they received it, but couldn't tell me exactly when they'd send it to EDD. Is there any way to check if EDD has received it yet? The online status just says pending.

You could try calling EDD to check if they received your medical certification yet... good luck getting through tho lol took me like 50 tries when i was pregnant last year

When I had a similar situation with my pregnancy disability claim last year, I was going CRAZY trying to reach someone at EDD to confirm they had my medical certification from my doctor. I tried calling for two weeks straight and either got disconnected or was on hold forever. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Totally worth it for the peace of mind - the rep confirmed they had received my medical certification but it was sitting in a processing queue. At least then I knew I didn't need to harass my doctor's office anymore!

is that service legit??? seems sketchy to have a third party involved with EDD stuff

It's completely legit - they just help you get through the phone system. You still talk directly with the EDD representative yourself. The EDD rep I spoke with actually mentioned they're aware of the service and don't have issues with people using it given how impossible their phone system is.

Update: I was able to speak with an EDD rep today (thanks for the Claimyr tip, it actually worked!). Good news - the rep confirmed Kaiser sent in my medical certification yesterday and the change in effective date was processed correctly. Now I just need to wait for claim processing, which they said could take up to 2 weeks. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly from here!

awesome! glad it worked out! just remember about that stupid 7 day waiting period so u dont panic when u dont see money right away lol

Be careful with the change in effective date because it might trigger a REVIEW of your claim which can add time. When I did my pregnancy disability, the system auto-flagged my claim when I made a change and then I had to wait FOREVER. Make sure you keep certifying even if it seems like nothing is happening. That was my mistake - I thought since my status wasn't changing that I didn't need to keep doing the certifications.

This is partially incorrect information. For SDI (including pregnancy disability), you do NOT need to certify every two weeks like with unemployment. Once your claim is approved, payments are automatically issued for the claim duration specified by your physician, unless there's a return-to-work date submitted or your physician provides updated information. The only time you would need to "certify" for SDI is if you receive a specific form asking about work activity or other specific information. This is different from regular UI certification.

One more thing to keep in mind with pregnancy disability claims - make sure you understand how your pregnancy disability claim will transition to Paid Family Leave (PFL) after delivery if you're planning to use that benefit as well. Typically, pregnancy disability covers 4 weeks before delivery and 6-8 weeks after (depending on delivery type), then you can transition to PFL for bonding time. You'll need to file a separate claim for the PFL portion, and there's specific timing for that application. Just something to plan for while you're waiting for your current claim to process.

Thank you SO much for mentioning this. I completely forgot I'll need to transition from SDI to PFL after delivery. Do I need to contact my doctor again for the PFL portion? Or is that a separate process?

For PFL bonding benefits, you don't need a doctor's certification. You'll need to provide documentation showing your relationship to the child (usually birth certificate or hospital documentation). The EDD has a specific process for transitioning from pregnancy disability to PFL - when you're nearing the end of your pregnancy disability period, you'll receive information about filing for PFL. Just don't wait until the last minute to submit it to avoid gaps in payment.

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone else going through this - I had a very similar situation where my employment end date changed after I'd already filed my SDI claim. Like others mentioned, changing the effective date was absolutely the right call and didn't cause any delays beyond normal processing time. One tip that helped me: I created a simple timeline document with all my important dates (last day of work, effective date of disability, expected delivery date, etc.) and kept it handy for any phone calls with EDD or my doctor's office. It really helped when I needed to reference specific dates quickly. Also, if you're dealing with Kaiser for the medical certification, you can check the status of your request through their secure messaging system. They usually respond within 24-48 hours about whether they've sent your paperwork to EDD. Much faster than calling and waiting on hold! Wishing you the best with your claim processing and congratulations on your upcoming baby! 🎉
