EDD SDI check sent to wrong address - how to track down $7,500 payment?
My husband was approved for disability benefits in May 2025 but we're having a major problem with where the check was sent. EDD shows our current address for all his regular correspondence, but we think his SDI claim is somehow linked to his previous employer which has our old address from 2 years ago! His online account shows a payment was issued for $7,500 on June 3rd, but nothing has arrived after 2 weeks. We've already updated our address with USPS months ago, but I'm worried this check might be sitting at our old apartment complex where we don't know anyone. We've called the main EDD number 15+ times but keep getting disconnected after waiting forever. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? Who specifically do we need to talk to about tracking down a disability check sent to the wrong address? We're really counting on this money for medical bills and rent is due next week.

This happened to me last year. You need to specifically talk to the SDI division, not regular EDD. Their systems don't always sync up properly with address changes. Call the SDI office directly at 1-800-480-3287, but you need to call right when they open at 8am to have any chance of getting through. Ask them to place a stop payment on the original check and reissue to your current address. They can verify where it was sent and if it's been cashed.

•Thank you so much! I'll try calling them first thing tomorrow morning. Do you know if they'll reissue right away or will there be another long wait?

•Mail forwarding typically only lasts for 1 year after you submit the change of address. If they moved 2 years ago, USPS wouldn't forward it anymore.

You might have better luck using Claimyr to get through to an EDD representative. I was in a similar situation and spent days trying to reach someone about my misplaced disability check. Used their service at claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. The agent I spoke with was able to place a stop payment on my original check and issue a new one to my correct address.

•I've never heard of this service! Did they actually get you through to a real person? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point.

•Yes, it connected me to an actual EDD disability representative who could see my claim details and help with the check reissue. Much better than getting hung up on repeatedly!

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!!!! I had FOUR checks sent to my old address last year even after updating my info online AND submitting the change of address form THREE SEPARATE TIMES!!! The left hand never knows what the right is doing at EDD. They told me to wait 10 business days for the stop payment, then another 7-10 days for reissue, then ANOTHER week for mail delivery. Meanwhile my landlord was threatening eviction!!! MAKE SURE you get confirmation numbers for EVERYTHING and write down every person's name you talk to!!!

•Oh no, that sounds awful! Did you eventually get your money? I'm going to start keeping a detailed log of all calls and names.

Wait, did they actually issue a paper check? Most SDI payments now come on the EDD debit card. Are you sure it's not loaded onto his card? My husband's disability was automatically added to his card and we never got any paper checks.

•We specifically requested paper checks on his application because we had issues with the debit card during his unemployment claim last year. But thanks for mentioning this - I'll double check his online account to make sure we didn't miss something!

I work in HR and deal with this constantly. Here's exactly what you need to do: 1. Call SDI at 1-800-480-3287 (try right at 8am when they open) 2. Tell them you need a "stop payment and reissue" for your disability check 3. They will verify your identity and current address 4. Ask them to note your claim with the correct address for ALL future payments 5. Request confirmation of the stop payment in writing 6. Ask for an estimated date for the reissued check The address mix-up likely happened because your husband's W-2 or employer-reported information had the old address, and SDI pulls from different databases than regular EDD. This is a common problem that they deal with frequently. If the check hasn't been cashed, they can usually reissue within 7-10 business days.

•Thank you for these specific steps! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'm setting my alarm for 7:45am tomorrow to try calling.

•Most EDD offices don't handle disability claims in person anymore - they'll just tell you to call the SDI number. But I guess it depends on your local office.

Just checking back - were you able to get through to SDI? If they told you it could take weeks for reissue, ask to speak with a supervisor about expediting due to financial hardship. Sometimes they can process it faster.

•We finally got through yesterday after using the Claimyr service someone mentioned! They confirmed the check went to our old address and placed a stop payment. The representative said they'll expedite the new check since it's a substantial amount and we explained our situation. Should have the new one in 5-7 business days. Such a relief! Thanks to everyone for the help!

That's great news that you got it resolved! For anyone else reading this thread who might face a similar issue, I'd also recommend checking with your old address if possible. Sometimes apartment complexes or new tenants will hold mail for a while. I had a friend who got their disability check back this way when EDD sent it to the wrong place. Also worth noting - if you move again, make sure to update your address with BOTH regular EDD and the SDI division separately since they don't always sync up automatically. Glad everything worked out for you!

•This is really helpful advice! I'm new here but dealing with a similar situation right now. My disability check also went to my old address from 6 months ago. I didn't even think about contacting the old place directly - that's a great backup plan while I'm waiting for EDD to sort things out. Quick question though - when you say to update with both regular EDD and SDI separately, do they have different phone numbers or online portals? I want to make sure I cover all my bases when I move next month.
