EDD SDI certification confusion after claim extension - do I need to certify again?

I'm super confused about the certification process after my disability claim got extended. My doctor submitted the extension paperwork last week and today I saw my claim was updated with the new end date (extending to April 15, 2025). But now I don't see any option to certify like I did before. In my previous certification period, there was a clear section showing when I needed to certify and what dates were covered. Do extension claims work differently? Am I just supposed to wait for the payments to come through automatically? I've been getting benefits for my back injury for the past 8 weeks, and always had to certify every 2 weeks. My account shows the claim status as "active" but there's no certification timeline. I'm worried I might miss something important and delay my payments. Has anyone dealt with this after getting an extension approved?

extensions are usually automatic after approval. u probably won't need to certify again unless they specifically tell u to. that's what happened with me anyway.

Thanks for replying! Do you remember how long it took for payments to start hitting your account after your extension was approved? I'm getting really anxious because rent is due next week.

I had the same exact question when my pregnancy disability claim got extended last month! Called EDD about 10 times with no luck getting through. I finally discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual EDD rep in under 15 minutes. The rep explained that with extensions, some claims switch to automatic payments while others still require certification—it depends on your specific claim type and medical provider's recommendation. They were able to check my account and tell me exactly what to expect. Saved me so much stress! There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd

Are you SURE this works?? I've been trying to reach EDD for THREE DAYS straight and keep getting hung up on. About to lose my mind!!!

Yes, it definitely worked for me! I was skeptical too after wasting so much time on hold, but it connected me right away. The rep I spoke with said they're completely swamped with calls right now because of some new system updates.

EDD's certification requirements aren't consistent across all claim types. For standard SDI claims, you typically certify every two weeks. For extensions, especially those based on the same medical condition, they sometimes switch you to automatic payments. There's actually a way to check this in your account. Go to the "Claim Details" section (not the main dashboard), then check the "Certification Requirements" field. If it says "Automatic Payment" you're good. If it says "Bi-weekly certification required" but you don't see certification options, you should contact EDD immediately. Also, if your doctor submitted the extension paperwork through their SDI Online portal rather than using a paper form, the process is usually more streamlined and often switches to automatic payments.

Thank you so much for this detailed response! I just checked the Claim Details section and it does say "Automatic Payment" now. It didn't say that before the extension. That makes me feel much better. Do you know if the payment schedule stays the same? I was getting paid every two weeks before.

Yes, your payment schedule should remain the same - every two weeks. The only thing that changes is that you don't have to take action to certify. The payments typically process on the same schedule as before. If you don't see a payment within 14 days of your last one, that's when I'd start trying to contact them.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A DISASTER!!! I had 3 extensions on my claim last year and EACH ONE was handled differently. First one needed certification, second one was automatic, third one they randomly decided I needed to certify again BUT NEVER TOLD ME so I missed 3 weeks of payments!!! When I finally got through to someone they said "oh sorry that was a system error" but I still had to wait another 10 days to get my backpay. EDD is BROKEN!!!

My sister works for a doctor's office that processes a lot of disability claims, and she says that the certification requirements often change depending on what codes the doctor uses when submitting the extension. If they mark it as a continuation of the same condition with the same severity, it often switches to automatic payments. But if they classify it as the same condition with different limitations or treatments, they might keep the certification requirement. Either way, you should get a notice in the mail explaining the certification requirements for your extension period within about 5-7 days of the extension being approved. I'd wait for that before worrying too much.

This is actually really interesting... my doctor initially had me certifying but after my surgery it switched to automatic payments. Now I wonder if it was because they changed how they coded my condition!

When I had my disability claim last fall it was so weird. I had to certify at first, then I got an extension and didn't have to certify, then I got ANOTHER extension and had to certify again lol. I don't think even EDD knows what their own rules are half the time.

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with EDD (finally)! For anyone who ends up in the same situation, here's what they told me: 1. When an extension is approved, the system automatically evaluates whether certification is needed based on the doctor's statements. 2. If your condition is stable and ongoing (like my back injury), they often switch to automatic payments to reduce paperwork. 3. Your online account should update within 48 hours to show your payment schedule, even if certification isn't required. 4. If you're worried, you can call and request to be put back on certification if you prefer having that control/visibility. They confirmed my payments will continue on the same schedule. Feeling much better now! Thanks for all the help everyone.

I'm new to this whole disability benefits process and reading through this thread has been super helpful! I just submitted my initial SDI claim last week for a knee injury and I'm already worried about what happens if I need an extension. It sounds like the system is pretty inconsistent with how they handle things. One question - for those who've been through extensions, do you get any kind of heads up before your current claim period ends? Like does EDD send you a notice saying "hey, your claim expires in X days, talk to your doctor about an extension if needed"? Or is it totally on you to keep track of the dates and coordinate with your doctor? Also @Luca Conti glad you got it sorted out! Sounds like a stressful situation but at least you got answers in the end.

Welcome to the community! From what I've seen here, EDD doesn't really give you a heads up - you have to stay on top of your claim dates yourself. I'd recommend marking your calendar with when your claim period ends and talking to your doctor about 2-3 weeks before that date if you think you'll need an extension. That way there's time to get the paperwork submitted before your benefits stop. The system seems pretty inconsistent but being proactive seems to be the key!

As someone who went through multiple extensions last year, I can share what I learned the hard way. The key thing is that EDD doesn't proactively notify you about upcoming claim end dates - you absolutely have to track this yourself. I recommend setting reminders on your phone for 3 weeks AND 1 week before your claim expires. Here's what worked for me: I created a simple spreadsheet tracking my claim start/end dates, extension submission dates, and payment schedules. When you're dealing with pain and medical issues, it's easy to lose track of administrative stuff. Also, build a relationship with your doctor's office staff who handle disability paperwork. They often know the EDD system better than the doctors themselves and can help ensure forms are submitted with the right codes (which apparently affects whether you'll need to certify or get automatic payments). One more tip - screenshot your online account regularly, especially when claim details change. I had to prove my payment schedule changed after an extension once and having those screenshots saved me weeks of back-and-forth with EDD. The system is definitely inconsistent, but being organized and proactive helps a lot. Good luck with your knee injury recovery!

This is such solid advice @Javier Morales! I wish I had seen something like this when I was starting my claim. The spreadsheet idea is brilliant - I've been trying to keep track of everything in my head which is obviously not working well when you're dealing with chronic pain and brain fog from medications. I'm definitely going to set up those phone reminders and start documenting everything. The screenshot tip is really smart too. It sounds like having your own paper trail is crucial since EDD's system seems so unreliable. Thanks for taking the time to share what you learned! It's really reassuring to hear from people who've actually navigated this successfully.

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now! My workers comp disability claim is up for extension next month and reading through everyone's experiences here is both helpful and terrifying lol. It sounds like there's no standard process at all. @Luca Conti I'm so glad you were able to get through to someone and get clarity on your situation! The fact that they can switch between certification and automatic payments without really telling you is honestly ridiculous. @Javier Morales your spreadsheet idea is genius - I'm definitely going to set that up this weekend. I've been relying on the EDD website to keep track of my dates but clearly that's not reliable enough. One thing I'm curious about - has anyone had experience with extensions when your doctor is part of a large medical group vs an independent practice? I'm wondering if the way they submit paperwork affects processing times or certification requirements. My doctor is with Kaiser and they seem pretty experienced with disability claims, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Also, for anyone reading this who's new to the process like @NeonNova - definitely start tracking everything from day one. I wish I had started documenting my interactions with EDD earlier because now I'm trying to piece together what happened when.

Hey @Ellie Simpson! I can't speak to Kaiser specifically, but I had a really good experience with my doctor who's part of a larger medical group. They had a dedicated disability coordinator who knew all the EDD forms and procedures inside and out. She actually called me before my extension deadline to remind me to schedule an appointment! From what I've heard, larger medical groups often have more experience with the EDD system and sometimes have staff whose job it is to handle disability paperwork properly. They're also more likely to use the online portal instead of paper forms, which seems to make the process smoother. That said, I'd still recommend being proactive and following up yourself. Even with good medical office support, the responsibility ultimately falls on you to make sure everything gets submitted on time. The spreadsheet tracking method @Javier Morales mentioned has been a lifesaver for staying organized! Good luck with your extension next month - hopefully it goes smoothly for you!
