EDD DE 2593 form confusion: How to report disability insurance payments?

I'm filling out the Check Continuing Eligibility Questionnaire and I'm super confused about one of the questions. It asks if I've received or will receive employer wages like sick leave, holiday pay, or Workers' Compensation Benefits during my claim period. The thing is, I got payments from a disability insurance policy, but it's not from my employer. I want to be honest, but I'm worried it might look like I'm getting paid by my employer when I'm not. Has anyone else dealt with this? How did you handle it?

Ugh, I feel ya. Those forms are a nightmare! 🤦‍♂️ I had a similar situation with my private disability insurance. What I did was answer 'No' to that question since it's not coming from your employer. Then in the additional comments section, I explained about the disability insurance payments. Better to over-explain than leave them guessing, ya know?

0 coins

Thanks for the advice! Did they follow up with you about it or was that explanation enough?

0 coins

Nah, they didn't ask for any more info. I think as long as you're clear it's not from your employer, you should be good. But don't quote me on that lol 😅

0 coins

This is terrible advice. Always answer yes if you received any type of payment during your claim period, even if it's not from your employer. It's better to disclose everything upfront.

0 coins

Whoa, chill dude. I'm just sharing what worked for me. But yeah, maybe OP should call and ask to be sure. 🤷‍♂️

0 coins

I've been through this rodeo before, and here's what I've learned: 1. Answer 'Yes' to the question. It's asking about ANY income, not just employer wages. 2. In the details section, clearly explain it's from a private disability insurance policy, NOT your employer. 3. Provide the exact amount you received and the dates. 4. If possible, attach documentation showing the source of the payments. 5. Keep copies of everything you submit. Remember, it's always better to over-disclose. They can sort out what's relevant, but hiding info can bite you in the butt later. Good luck!

Wow, this is really helpful! Thank you so much for breaking it down like this. I'll definitely follow these steps.

This guy EDDs 👆 Solid advice right here!

lmao welcome to the wonderful world of government paperwork 🤡 where nothing makes sense and everything is designed to trip you up

0 coins

Has anyone actually tried calling EDD to ask about this? I've been on hold for like 3 hours and I'm about to lose my mind 😫

0 coins

Bruh, calling EDD is like trying to win the lottery. Good luck! 🍀

I found a way to get through! There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20 but it saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

0 coins

Wait, for real? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

0 coins

Yeah, I was skeptical at first too, but it worked for me. Saved me from pulling my hair out lol

0 coins

Idk man, paying to talk to a government agency feels wrong. Shouldn't this be free?

0 coins

I get that, but for me, time is money. I'd rather pay $20 than waste a whole day on hold. To each their own tho 🤷‍♀️

0 coins

Am I the only one who thinks its ridiculous that we need a freaking PhD to fill out these forms? 🙄 The system is broken, y'all.

0 coins

Preach! 🙌 It's like they're trying to make it as confusing as possible.

0 coins

For real tho. I swear they do this on purpose to deny claims. Stay strong, OP! 💪

0 coins

Quick question - does anyone know if the amount you receive from disability insurance affects your unemployment benefits? I'm in a similar boat and now I'm worried about that too 😰

0 coins

It can, depending on the type of disability insurance and how much you're receiving. Best to disclose it and let EDD figure it out. Better safe than sorry!

0 coins

Hey OP, just wanted to say hang in there. I know how stressful this stuff can be. Sending good vibes your way! ❤️

I went through this exact same situation last year! The key thing to remember is that the form is asking about "employer wages" specifically - so if your disability insurance is from a private policy you purchased (not through your employer), then technically you should answer "No" to that question. However, I'd still mention it in the additional comments section just to be transparent. I wrote something like "Receiving payments from private disability insurance policy (not employer-provided)" and included the monthly amount. They never questioned it or asked for more info. The important thing is being clear that it's NOT coming from your employer. Hope this helps ease your stress a bit!

Just wanted to add my two cents as someone who's been through this maze before. I think there's some conflicting advice here, so let me share what actually happened when I dealt with EDD about disability payments. The truth is, the form can be interpreted different ways, but here's what I learned from my case worker: if it's truly a private disability policy that YOU paid for (not employer-sponsored), then you're not technically receiving "employer wages." However, you absolutely should still disclose it somewhere on the form or in the additional comments. What I did was answer "No" to the employer wages question, but then in the remarks section I wrote: "Receiving $X/month from private disability insurance policy (policy holder: [my name], not employer-provided)." I also included the insurance company name and policy number. The key is being crystal clear about the source. EDD cares more about transparency than getting the "right" answer to a confusing question. They can always ask for clarification if needed, but they get really upset if they think you're hiding income. @Diego Mendoza - don't stress too much about this. Just be honest and thorough in your explanation. You've got this! 💪

This is super helpful, thank you @Dylan Campbell! I'm new to all this EDD stuff and it's honestly overwhelming. Your explanation about being clear on the source makes total sense. I'm in a similar situation with a private policy I've been paying into for years. It's frustrating how these forms are worded - they make it sound like ANY money you receive should be reported as "employer wages" when that's clearly not the case. I'm definitely going to follow your approach of answering "No" but explaining everything in the comments section. Better to over-communicate than leave them guessing, right?

0 coins

I'm going through something similar right now and honestly, the stress is real! 😅 What I've learned from reading through all these responses is that transparency is key, but the way you present the information matters too. I ended up calling my insurance company first to get a clear letter stating that my disability policy is privately owned (not employer-sponsored) and that I've been paying the premiums myself. Having that documentation made me feel way more confident when filling out the form. For what it's worth, I went with the approach of answering "No" to the employer wages question since my payments aren't coming from my employer, but then I wrote a detailed explanation in the additional comments: "Receiving disability benefits from private insurance policy [Policy #XXXXX] with [Insurance Company Name]. This is NOT employer-provided coverage - I pay all premiums personally. Monthly benefit amount: $XXXX." The whole process is nerve-wracking, but I think as long as you're upfront about everything, you should be okay. EDD seems to appreciate when people provide clear documentation rather than leaving them to guess. Good luck, and don't let the bureaucracy get you down! 🙏

This is exactly what I needed to hear! @Kelsey Hawkins thank you for sharing your approach - getting that documentation from your insurance company is brilliant. I never thought to do that but it makes so much sense to have official proof that it s'a private policy. I ve'been stressing about this for days and reading everyone s'experiences here has been such a relief. It sounds like the consensus is to be transparent but make it crystal clear that it s'not employer-provided. I m'definitely going to follow your lead and get a letter from my insurance company too. Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed response - you ve'probably saved me hours of anxiety! 😊

Hey everyone! As someone who just went through this exact situation a few months ago, I wanted to share what worked for me. I was getting payments from a private disability policy I've had for years (totally separate from my employer) and was super confused about how to handle the DE 2593 form. After reading all the great advice here, I ended up doing a combination approach: 1. Answered "No" to the employer wages question since it's not from my employer 2. In the additional comments section, I wrote: "Receiving monthly disability benefits from private insurance policy [Policy #]. This is personal coverage, NOT employer-provided. I pay all premiums myself. Monthly amount: $XXX" 3. I also attached a copy of my policy declaration page showing my name as the policyholder The whole thing went smoothly - no follow-up questions or issues. The key really is being super clear about the source and making sure they understand it's private coverage. @Diego Mendoza - don't overthink it too much! Just be transparent and detailed in your explanation. The fact that you're asking these questions shows you want to do the right thing, and EDD appreciates that honesty. You've got plenty of good advice to work with here! 👍

This is exactly the kind of real-world experience I was hoping to find! @Sofia Torres thank you so much for sharing what actually worked for you. I ve'been going back and forth on this for days and your step-by-step approach gives me confidence to move forward. The idea of attaching the policy declaration page is genius - I have mine right here and it clearly shows I m'the policyholder. It s'such a relief to hear from someone who actually went through this process successfully without any complications. I m'definitely going to follow your exact format when I fill out my form tomorrow. Thanks for taking the time to help out a fellow stressed-out claimant! 🙏

I went through this exact same nightmare last year and can totally relate to your confusion! The wording on these forms is absolutely terrible. Here's what I learned after dealing with EDD for months: The key distinction is WHERE the money is coming from. If it's a disability policy that YOU purchased and pay premiums for (not through your employer's benefits package), then it's NOT "employer wages" - even though the form makes it sound like any income should be reported there. Here's what I did that worked: - Answered "No" to the employer wages question - In the additional information section, wrote something like: "Receiving $XXX monthly from private disability insurance policy #[number] with [company name]. This is personal coverage that I pay for independently - NOT employer-sponsored benefits." - Kept detailed records of everything The most important thing is being crystal clear that it's YOUR private policy, not something provided by your employer. EDD just wants to make sure you're not double-dipping on benefits or getting paid by an employer while claiming unemployment. Don't stress too much about getting it "perfect" - they care way more about honesty than getting every checkbox exactly right. As long as you're transparent about the source and amount, you'll be fine. This community has your back! 💪

Thank you so much @Sara Hellquiem! Your explanation really helps clarify the distinction between private vs employer-sponsored coverage. I've been overthinking this whole thing but you're absolutely right - the key is just being transparent about the source. I love how you emphasized that EDD cares more about honesty than perfect checkbox answers. That takes a lot of pressure off! I'm going to use your wording as a template when I fill out my form. It's so reassuring to hear from multiple people who've successfully navigated this exact situation. This community is amazing - I was panicking about this yesterday and now I feel confident about how to handle it. Thanks for sharing your experience! 🙏

I just wanted to jump in and say how helpful this entire thread has been! I'm dealing with the exact same situation - private disability insurance payments while on unemployment - and I was honestly panicking about how to handle the DE 2593 form. Reading through everyone's experiences has been such a lifesaver. The consensus seems pretty clear: be transparent, distinguish between private vs employer-provided coverage, and document everything. I especially appreciate the practical tips like getting a letter from your insurance company and attaching policy documents. @Diego Mendoza - you asked a question that clearly a lot of us needed answered! Based on all the advice here, it sounds like you're in good hands. The fact that so many people have successfully navigated this exact scenario is really reassuring. One thing I'm taking away from all this is that EDD's forms could definitely be clearer, but their main concern is honesty and transparency. As long as we're upfront about our situations and provide clear documentation, we should be okay. Thanks to everyone who shared their real experiences - this is exactly why communities like this are so valuable! 🙏

@Mei Liu you re'so right - this thread has been incredibly helpful! I m'new to this whole situation and was feeling totally lost about the EDD paperwork. Reading everyone s'real experiences makes me feel so much more confident about handling my own form. The step-by-step advice and documentation tips are pure gold. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share what actually worked for them! 🙏

Hey @Diego Mendoza! I'm actually in almost the exact same boat right now - private disability insurance while dealing with unemployment paperwork. Reading through all these responses has been SO helpful! I was literally about to ask the same question because that DE 2593 form wording is confusing as heck. From what everyone's shared, it sounds like the key is making it crystal clear that your payments are from YOUR private policy, not employer-provided benefits. I'm planning to follow the advice from @Sara Hellquiem and @Sofia Torres - answer "No" to the employer wages question since it's not coming from your employer, but then be super detailed in the additional comments about the private policy. Getting that documentation from your insurance company like @Kelsey Hawkins suggested is brilliant too. It's crazy how many of us are dealing with this exact situation! But honestly, reading everyone's success stories makes me feel way more confident. The fact that multiple people have gone through this process smoothly by just being transparent is really reassuring. Thanks for starting this thread - you've helped way more people than just yourself! We've got this! 💪

@Sofia Gutierrez yes! It s'so comforting to know I m'not the only one confused by this. I ve'been reading through all these responses and honestly feeling so much better about the whole situation. Everyone here has been incredibly helpful with their real-world experiences. I m'definitely going with the approach of answering No "since" it s'not employer wages, but being super clear in the comments that it s'private disability insurance. The documentation tips are gold too - I never would have thought to get a letter from my insurance company. This community is amazing! Thanks for the encouragement - we definitely got this! 😊

I just went through this exact situation a couple months ago and wanted to share my experience to hopefully help ease some of the stress! I had private disability insurance payments while filling out the DE 2593 form and was completely lost on how to handle it. After researching and talking to an EDD representative (took forever to get through, but I finally did), here's what I learned: The form is specifically asking about "employer wages" - so if your disability insurance is a private policy that YOU pay for, it's not technically employer wages. However, you absolutely should disclose it for transparency. What worked for me: 1. Answered "No" to the employer wages question since my payments weren't from my employer 2. In the additional comments section, I wrote: "Receiving monthly disability benefits from private insurance policy [Policy #XXXXX] with [Insurance Company]. This is personal coverage paid for by me, NOT employer-sponsored. Monthly amount: $XXXX." 3. I also included a copy of my insurance declaration page showing I'm the policy owner The EDD rep told me this was exactly the right approach - they appreciate the transparency and clear documentation. No follow-up questions, no issues with my claim. The key is just being super clear about the source of the payments. Don't overthink it - honesty and documentation are your best friends here! You've got this! 🙏

@Savannah Glover thank you so much for sharing your experience! It s'incredibly reassuring to hear from someone who actually spoke with an EDD rep about this exact situation. The fact that they confirmed your approach was correct gives me so much confidence. I ve'been stressed about this for weeks, but reading your step-by-step process and knowing it worked perfectly makes me feel like I can actually handle this. I love that you included the policy declaration page too - that s'such smart documentation. Your advice about not overthinking it really hits home because I ve'been going in circles about this. Thanks for taking the time to help out fellow community members - this is exactly what I needed to hear! 😊

Wow, this thread has been such a goldmine of information! I'm currently dealing with the exact same situation - private disability insurance while filling out EDD forms - and I was honestly panicking about it until I found this discussion. What I'm taking away from everyone's experiences is that the key is being crystal clear about the distinction between private vs employer-provided coverage. It sounds like most people have had success answering "No" to the employer wages question (since it's not coming from your employer) but then being super detailed in the additional comments section about the private policy. The documentation tips are incredible too - getting a letter from your insurance company and including policy declaration pages is such smart advice that I never would have thought of on my own. @Diego Mendoza - thank you for asking this question! You've helped so many of us who were struggling with the same confusion. Based on all the success stories shared here, it sounds like transparency and clear documentation are really the way to go. The fact that multiple people have navigated this successfully using similar approaches is so reassuring. I just wanted to add my experience since I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago! I had a private disability policy that I'd been paying into for years, and when I had to fill out the DE 2593 form, I was completely stumped by that employer wages question. After reading through all the amazing advice in this thread, I'm seeing the same approach that worked for me: answer "No" to the employer wages question since it's genuinely not coming from your employer, but then be super transparent in the additional comments section. What I wrote was something like: "Receiving disability benefits from private insurance policy #[number] with [company name]. This is NOT employer-provided coverage - I am the policyholder and pay all premiums myself. Monthly benefit: $XXX." I also called my insurance company and had them send me an official letter confirming that I own the policy and pay the premiums independently. Having that documentation gave me so much peace of mind when submitting the form. The whole process went smoothly - no follow-up questions or complications. EDD just wants to make sure you're not getting paid by an employer while claiming benefits, so as long as you're clear that it's YOUR private policy, you should be golden. @Diego Mendoza - based on everyone's experiences here, you're definitely on the right track by asking these questions and wanting to be honest. The fact that so many people have successfully handled this exact scenario should give you confidence! 💪

@Drake this is such helpful advice! I'm new to this whole EDD process and was honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed about how to handle my private disability payments on the forms. Reading your experience and everyone else's in this thread has been incredibly reassuring. I love that you got an official letter from your insurance company - that's such a smart way to have solid documentation backing up your explanation. It really seems like the key is just being crystal clear that it's YOUR policy, not something provided by your employer. The fact that your process went smoothly with no follow-up questions gives me a lot of confidence. Thanks for taking the time to share what worked for you - this community is seriously amazing for helping people navigate these confusing bureaucratic situations! 😊

Reading through everyone's real experiences has been such a lifesaver. The consensus is crystal clear: answer "No" to the employer wages question since it's genuinely not coming from your employer, but be super transparent in the additional comments section about your private policy. Reading through all these real success stories has been such a relief - it s'clear that transparency really is the key, and EDD appreciates when people provide clear documentation rather than trying to guess what they want to hear. Just wanted to chime in as someone who's currently going through this exact same situation! I have a private disability policy that I've been paying into for about 5 years, and when I got to that question on the DE 2593 form, I literally sat there staring at it for like 20 minutes trying to figure out what they wanted 😅 Reading through all these responses has been SO incredibly helpful - I was honestly starting to panic about whether I'd mess up my claim by answering wrong. But it sounds like the key really is just being crystal clear about the source of the payments. I'm definitely going with the approach that seems to have worked for everyone: answering "No" since it's not employer wages, but then being super detailed in the additional comments section.
