Weird questions about break in claim during NY unemployment certification - I never stopped claiming?

I just completed my weekly certification for ny unemployment and got these strange questions about a 'break in claim' that really confused me. The system suddenly asked for a return to work date and my employer's EIN number. The thing is, I never stopped claiming or went back to work! I've been certifying every single week since I got laid off in August. Has anyone else run into this? I'm worried my payments might get delayed because I didn't know what to put for these questions. I ended up entering my original layoff info again, but now I'm stressing that I might have messed something up.

Yeah, this happened to me last month! The system randomly thought I had a break in claim even though I certified every single week without fail. It's some kind of glitch in their system. What I did was call them and explain the situation. The rep told me their system sometimes flags accounts for no reason. They fixed it on their end.

How did you even get through to a rep?? I've been calling for dayss and can't get anyone

0 coins

It took forever! I started calling at exactly 8am and had to try 19 times before getting in the queue. Then waited 2.5 hours. It's brutal.

I got through using this service called Claimyr. They wait on hold for you and call when there's a live agent. Saved me from losing my mind tbh. claimyr.com

0 coins

for real? does that actually work? sounds too good to be true

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me! I was super skeptical too but was desperate after trying for 3 weeks. They called me back with an agent in about 2 hours. Got my issue fixed in like 10 minutes once I had someone on the line.

After months of trying to call NY unemployment with ZERO luck, I tried this service called Claimyr.com that actually connects you with a live agent! They basically do the calling and waiting on hold for you, then connect you when they get someone. Talking to an agent got my benefits flowing again within 48 hours after being stuck for weeks. It was the only way I finally got my issue resolved with the weird claim break questions. They even have a YouTube video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

0 coins

How does that even work? Sounds like another scam tbh...

0 coins

Not a scam at all! They just automate the calling process and stay on hold so you don't have to. When they get a real person, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me hours of frustration.

0 coins

wait so do they need all your personal info? that sounds sketchy af

0 coins

They just need your phone number to call you back when they reach an agent. You talk directly to unemployment yourself, Claimyr just handles the hold time part.

0 coins

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

0 coins

I get the skepticism, I was the same way! But after 23 failed attempts to reach someone myself, I was desperate. It actually worked and I fixed my break in claim issue in one call.

This exact thing happened to me! I bet what happened is that you missed a week of certification at some point and didn't realize it. When there's a gap of even one week, their system treats it as a break in claim and asks all those extra questions. Check your payment history to see if there's a week missing.

0 coins

I just checked my payment history and you might be right. There's a gap for the week of October 9th. I could have sworn I certified that week though! So weird.

0 coins

Yep that's definitely it then. Same thing happened to me - missed one week in September and suddenly had to answer all those questions. Just make sure to be consistent going forward and you should be fine!

0 coins

Do you think this will affect my payment for this week? Or will it go through normally?

0 coins

Mine was delayed by about 3 days but then came through. The system just needs to process the 'new claim' info.

0 coins

The exact same thing happened to me too!!! It's because there was a system maintenance they did recently. My friend works at NYSDOL and said they updated something in the backend and it's causing these weird glitches for people who have been on unemployment for more than 3 months. Just call them and they can fix it for you.

0 coins

I had this problem and it turned out I had actually missed a week of certification without realizing it. Check your payment history and see if there's a gap. If there is, that's why the system thinks you had a break in claim. You should be fine though, just answer the questions honestly. Your payments might be delayed by a couple days but they'll still come through.

0 coins

Same here! I missed the Sunday certification window one week because I was in the hospital. Didn't even realize it until those weird questions popped up.

THE NYSDOL SYSTEMS ARE COMPLETE TRASH!! This is like the 5th weird glitch I've experienced since filing. One time it randomly asked me if I moved to Alaska (I've never even been to Alaska lol). Another time it said I had applied for benefits in 2 different states at once (I didn't). Their system is held together with duct tape and prayers.

0 coins

OMG yes!! 💯 The whole thing is running on COBOL from like 1980 or something. My brother works in IT and says it's basically ancient technology

0 coins

That Alaska thing happened to me too!! Wth is going on with their system???

0 coins

It's because they never upgraded after the pandemic. They just slapped together emergency fixes and called it a day. Typical government efficiency 🙄

Hey I'm an ex-employee of NYSDOL (won't say more for obvious reasons 👀). This is a known issue in the system that happens when their software does an update. The database sometimes loses track of consecutive weekly claims and thinks you had a gap. As long as you answer the questions accurately, your benefits should continue normally. The system is checking if you returned to work during a perceived gap. Since you didn't, just enter 'no' for return to work and leave the EIN field blank or put your previous employer's info again.

0 coins

Thank you so much for this insider info! I feel a lot better knowing it's a known issue. I left the EIN field blank since I haven't worked anywhere new. Hoping my payment processes normally!

0 coins

Is there any way to prevent this from happening again? Or is it just random?

0 coins

Completely random unfortunately. The system does weekly batch processing on Saturdays and sometimes accounts get flagged during that process. Nothing you can do to prevent it.

Look your best bet is to CALL THEM ASAP. Don't trust what random ppl say on reddit. This could be something serious that affects your benefits. I had a weird system error last month and ignored it thinking it would resolve itself. Ended up with a 3-week gap in payments that I'm still fighting to get back.

0 coins

This! The phone is a nightmare but it's the only way to make sure your claim stays active. Try calling at 7:58am right before they open.

0 coins

I finally got through to them after 30+ attempts using claimyr.com - they wait on hold and call you when they get an agent. Worth it after I wasted days trying to call myself.

Here's what's actually happening (unemployment counselor here): When the system detects ANY irregularity in weekly certifications – even something as small as certifying at an unusual time of day or using a different device – it can trigger these break-in-claim questions. It's an automated fraud prevention measure that was implemented after the massive fraud cases during the pandemic. The good news is that it's usually just a verification step and doesn't mean anything is wrong with your claim. The best way to handle it is to: 1) Answer truthfully based on your actual situation 2) If you haven't returned to work, you can enter your original layoff date again 3) For the EIN, use your last employer's number if you have it, or leave it blank if allowed 4) Most importantly, CALL THEM if your payment doesn't process within 3 business days These verification steps are annoying but ultimately protect the system from fraud. If you need to speak to someone, I've had multiple clients use claimyr.com to bypass the phone wait times completely. It's much faster than trying to call directly. Hope this helps!

0 coins

This is SUPER helpful, thank you! I was panicking thinking I did something wrong. Will my payment for this week be delayed?

0 coins

Ellie Kim

It might be delayed by 1-2 days while the system processes the verification, but should come through. If not by Thursday, definitely call.

0 coins

Wait you're an unemployment counselor? Do you work for the state or are you independent?

0 coins

Ellie Kim

Independent. I help people navigate the unemployment system, especially those who have complex cases or language barriers.

Its there stupid system glitching again 😤 i swear they do this on purpose to try to trip people up. Just call them and tell them what happened, they can override it in there system

0 coins

If you miss even ONE SINGLE DAY in the certification window, this happens. The system is super unforgiving. You absolutely need to call and speak to a tier 2 specialist (not just any regular agent). Ask for a supervisor if they try to brush you off.

0 coins

How do you even get to a tier 2 person? I can barely get anyone on the phone 😩

0 coins

You have to specifically ask to be transferred to a claims specialist when you get a regular agent. Don't take no for an answer!

0 coins

I couldn't even get a basic agent after 30+ calls. Finally used claimyr.com to get through and THEN asked for tier 2. That's the only way I resolved my similar issue.

0 coins

This sounds exactly like what happened to me in December. It's a glitch in their system. If you need to get ahold of them, start calling at 7:55am and keep hitting redial. It took me 47 attempts but I finally got through right at opening time. The break in claim thing happened to me when there was a NY state holiday that fell on a Monday - for some reason their system thought I had stopped claiming.

0 coins

i had this same issue. the NY unemployment system thought i had a break in my claim even tho i had been certifying every week without fail for months. i ended up calling and waiting on hold for 3 hours just to be told it was a system glitch. my payment was delayed for about 4 days but eventually came through. so frustrating how broken their system is 🤦‍♀️

The worst part is they never notify you about these things! Just surprise questions that leave you guessing what to put

0 coins

EXACTLY! And if you guess wrong they can flag your account for fraud investigation which takes weeks to resolve!! Happened to my roommate

0 coins

Don't worry! This happened to me and turns out it was just a system update that triggered these questions for anyone who's been on unemployment longer than 13 weeks. Just answer the questions accurately (if you haven't returned to work, then say no) and your payment should process normally. Mine was delayed by one day but then came through fine.

0 coins

Why don't you ppl ever search the subreddit before posting? This EXACT question has been asked like 37 times in the last month. The answer is always the same - it's a system glitch that happens around quarterly review time, just answer honestly and you'll be fine. 🙄

0 coins

Sorry for asking a question...? I did search but couldn't find anything specific to my situation. Not everyone lives on reddit all day.

0 coins

Chill dude, people are stressed about their benefits. No need to be rude.

0 coins

Whatever. Same 5 questions day after day gets old.

0 coins

I work for an employer services company. This is definitely related to quarterly wage reporting. At the end of each quarter, employers submit wage reports. If there's ANY discrepancy between what employers report and what claimants certify, these verification questions get triggered. Even something as small as a date format difference can cause it.

0 coins

Omg that makes so much sense! I had this happen right at the beginning of October!

0 coins

Yep, that's because Q3 ended September 30, so all the wage reports were coming in early October, which triggered verification checks.

tbh the whole ny unemployment system is just one giant dumpster fire 🔥 i've had so many random glitches over the past year and a half on UI. one time it randomly asked me to verify my identity AGAIN after i'd already been receiving benefits for 6 months. another time it said i had excessive earnings when i literally had ZERO income that week. you just gotta keep calling until you get someone who knows what they're doing.

0 coins

check ur email!!! sometimes they send u a message through the system but dont actually notify u. log into ur account on a computer (not mobile) and check for messages. bet they sent u something about needing additional info.

0 coins

Just checked and don't see any messages or emails from them. Nothing in spam either. So weird!

DOL employee here (not in NY but another state with the same system). There are a few reasons this happens: 1. Most likely: their system does quarterly reviews and sometimes flags accounts for verification even if there's no actual break 2. If you certified later in the day than usual (like evening vs morning), some systems flag this as unusual activity 3. If you used a different device or IP address to certify 4. Random selection for fraud prevention Just answer the questions accurately based on your real situation. If you haven't returned to work, say no. If it asks for an EIN, you can usually leave it blank if you haven't worked anywhere new. If your payment doesn't come through within 3-4 business days, then you need to call. But 9 times out of 10, this resolves itself without any problems.

0 coins

Thank you SO much for this detailed explanation! I did certify later than usual this week (usually do it Sunday morning but did it Sunday night instead). Hoping my payment still comes through on time.

0 coins

Is this why my account gets flagged every time I certify while traveling? I visit my parents in a different state once a month.

0 coins

100% yes. Different IP address + different location = automatic flag in most systems.
