I just went through this exact situation in August! Yes, you'll get your final partial payment automatically - mine came about 10 days after my SDI ended. For the PFL transition, definitely don't wait until your SDI ends to apply. I made that mistake and had a 3-week gap with no income while waiting for approval. Also important: your weekly benefit amount might be different for PFL than what you were getting for SDI. Mine decreased by about $75/week which I wasn't expecting. Just something to budget for!
Oh wow, I had no idea the benefit amount could change. I'll definitely plan for that possibility. Really appreciate the heads up about applying early to avoid gaps!
random question but does anyone know if bonding with baby PFL is different than caring for family member PFL? having baby next month but confused about all this
Yes, they're different subcategories of PFL. Bonding claims are generally simpler as you just need proof of relationship (birth certificate). For care claims like the OP is asking about, you need medical certification of the family member's condition. Same benefit amounts though, and both are accessed through the same PFL application process.
this is why i HATE the edd!!! they did the same thing to my mom after her hip surgery!!! the system is BROKEN and they dont care about disabled people at all!!! we pay into this system our whole lives and then when we need help they ghost us and make everything IMPOSSIBLE!!! 😡😡😡
ya its so frustrating! i paid in for like 15 years and then when i needed help it took 3 months to get my first payment. not right
Quick update based on some of the comments here: 1. You absolutely CAN revive an expired claim in many cases, especially when there were verification issues 2. Make sure to address your appeal to the "SDI Appeals Board" specifically, not just general EDD 3. If using the assembly member route, ask specifically for help with a "claim verification failure resulting in expiration" 4. Document EVERYTHING from this point forward - names, ID numbers, dates, and summaries of all conversations 5. When explaining your situation, use the phrase "ongoing attempts to resolve verification issues" as this specific language helps demonstrate good cause for late processing The verification loop between employers and EDD is unfortunately common. I'd suggest trying both the assembly member AND appeals approaches simultaneously for the best chance of resolution.
i just went to my local edd office in person and they helped me with my disability paperwork. might be easier than calling? idk if all offices do this but mine did
This isn't accurate for most SDI issues. While some EDD offices can provide general guidance, most in-person offices primarily handle Unemployment Insurance, not Disability Insurance. SDI is almost entirely handled through the centralized phone system or online. There are very few in-person services for SDI claims, especially since the pandemic.
UPDATE: Finally got through! I used the phone number and menu options that @helpful_guidance posted (thank you!!) and called right at 8:00am. Still had to wait about 35 minutes on hold, but eventually spoke with someone who was actually really helpful. They said my claim had a "medical certification issue" that needed to be resolved, but they fixed it while I was on the phone. My claim should be processed within 7-10 business days. For anyone else struggling with the phone system, definitely try calling right when they open!
Great to hear you got it resolved! And thanks for sharing what worked - it helps others who might be facing similar issues.
I'm a bit confused about something - is this a workers comp situation or regular disability? Because if you injured your knee AT work, you should be filing for workers comp, not SDI. But if it's just general knee problems that weren't caused by a specific work incident, then SDI is correct. Just want to make sure you're filing the right type of claim.
It's definitely regular disability (SDI). My knee problems are from years of waitressing but not from any specific injury event at work. My doctor says it's degenerative meniscus damage from repetitive stress over time.
Hey just wondering how this turned out for you? I'm in a similar situation with my disability claim and wondering if I should just try to push through at work even though I'm in pain because dealing with EDD seems impossible sometimes...
I ended up filing a new claim and got approved! Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned here to talk directly with an EDD rep who explained everything. Since it was within 60 days of my previous claim ending, I didn't have to serve another waiting period, and they approved it within 10 days. Don't push through the pain - it only makes things worse (I learned that the hard way).

•Totally! the system feels like it was designed in 1995 and never updated lol. I had a baby last year and my online account kept showing an error message whenever I tried to check my claim status. Super frustrating.

One more important thing: if it turns out you aren't eligible for SDI, make sure you look into the Paid Family Leave for self-employed individuals. If you did pay into that program before your delivery, you could still get the 8 weeks of bonding time benefits. For future reference, that's why the Disability Insurance Elective Coverage (DIEC) program exists - it allows self-employed people to opt into the state disability system. Something to consider for the future if you're planning to stay self-employed.

•Thank you! I'll definitely look into that. I'm planning to stay self-employed long-term, so I should probably sign up for DIEC regardless of what happens with this pregnancy claim. Learned my lesson for sure.
