As someone who went through a similar back injury situation, I just wanted to add that it's totally normal to feel nervous about returning to work, especially with a physical job. Since you mentioned your work involves heavy lifting, you might want to ask your employer about any accommodations they can make during your first few weeks back - like lighter duties or modified tasks. Many employers are required to provide reasonable accommodations under the ADA. Also, don't hesitate to communicate with your doctor if you start having increased pain after returning. It's better to address issues early rather than push through and risk a more serious re-injury. Good luck with your return to work!
That's really great advice about asking for accommodations! I hadn't thought about that but it makes total sense. My employer has been pretty understanding so far, so hopefully they'll work with me on modified duties for the first few weeks. I'm definitely going to keep a close eye on how my back feels and not try to be a hero about it. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's reassuring to hear from someone who went through something similar.
I went through something very similar with my SDI claim last year! The remaining benefit amount definitely threw me off at first too. Just to add to what everyone else has said - when you do go back to work, make sure you keep all your documentation from EDD about when your claim officially ended. I had to provide proof to my employer's HR department that my disability leave was properly closed out. Also, if your workplace has an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), they might be able to help you navigate the transition back to work and any accommodation requests. The first few weeks back can be mentally challenging too, not just physically. Take care of yourself!
Hey OP, what kind of payment are you waiting for? Regular UI, PUA, or something else? The process can be different depending on the type.
I'm in a similar boat - filed for disability benefits about 6 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything back. The uncertainty is killing me! I've tried calling the disability line but it's just as bad as the regular UI line. Has anyone had success with the disability claims specifically? I'm wondering if there are different tricks or if I should be calling a different number. Really hoping we all get some answers soon! 🤞
FINAL UPDATE: All my payments came through today! Six weeks of back pay all at once. Such a huge relief. For anyone dealing with identity verification issues on their pregnancy disability claim, definitely call and specifically ask for expedited processing due to medical necessity. Thanks again everyone for your help!
Congratulations on getting your payments resolved, Madison! Your story gives me so much hope. I'm currently 12 weeks pregnant with severe morning sickness and have been waiting 3 weeks for my identity verification to process. I submitted all my documents but haven't heard anything back. After reading through all these comments, I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service and use the specific phrasing about CCR 2706-2 for medical necessity. It's so stressful being sick AND worrying about money at the same time. Thank you for sharing your experience and keeping us updated - it really helps to know there's light at the end of the tunnel!
I'm so sorry you're dealing with this too, Carmen! The combination of severe morning sickness and financial stress is absolutely awful. Definitely try the Claimyr service - it really was a game changer for getting through to someone quickly. When you talk to the EDD rep, make sure to emphasize that you're on doctor's orders for your pregnancy complications and specifically request "expedited processing under CCR 2706-2 for medical necessity" like William mentioned. Also, don't be afraid to mention that the financial stress is potentially impacting your pregnancy health - they seemed to take that seriously when I called. Hoping you get your payments sorted out soon! Keep us posted on how it goes.
I'm really glad you're getting this sorted out! Just wanted to add that if you're worried about the financial gap while waiting for SDI to kick in, you might want to look into local food banks or emergency assistance programs in your area. Many counties have temporary financial assistance for people dealing with medical emergencies. Also, if your husband's employer offers any kind of emergency hardship fund or if he has accrued sick leave that could be converted to partial pay, now would be the time to ask HR about those options. The combination of getting SDI filed plus finding some temporary relief could help bridge this difficult period. Wishing your husband a smooth recovery!
Thank you so much for these additional resources! I hadn't thought about checking for local emergency assistance programs. We'll definitely look into food banks in our area - every little bit helps right now. I'll also have my husband reach out to his HR department tomorrow to see if there are any employee assistance programs available. The combination of filing for SDI today plus these temporary supports should hopefully get us through the next few weeks. Really appreciate everyone's advice and support during this stressful time!
Just wanted to share my experience since I went through something similar! I filed for SDI about 7 weeks after my knee surgery due to similar issues with doctor fees and financial stress. Even though I was past the 49-day window, EDD still processed my claim but I only got benefits from the date I filed, not backdated to when I first became disabled. The key thing that helped me was being completely honest on the application about why I delayed - I wrote in the comments section that it was due to financial hardship and inability to pay the medical certification fee upfront. While I didn't get the full backpay, I was still approved and started receiving benefits within 3 weeks. Don't give up hope - even if you're slightly past the ideal timeline, they do consider individual circumstances. Make sure to document everything and be transparent about the financial hardship that caused the delay.

Anyone else notice that SDI seems to be getting worse lately? I swear it wasn't this bad a few years ago. Budget cuts maybe?

•Yep, I've heard they're understaffed and overworked. Doesn't excuse the poor service, but might explain it.

•It's definitely gotten worse since COVID. They're probably still catching up.

I'm dealing with something similar! After my third attempt sending docs, I started taking screenshots of everything in their online portal and keeping detailed records. One thing that helped me was sending a secure message through the SDI Online portal in addition to mailing/faxing - at least then you have a digital trail showing you contacted them. Also, try calling right at 8 AM when they open - I finally got through that way after weeks of busy signals. Don't give up, you'll get your payment! 💪

•This is really helpful advice! I didn't know you could send secure messages through the online portal - I'll definitely try that along with calling at 8 AM sharp. Having a digital trail sounds like a smart way to cover all bases. Thanks for sharing what worked for you! 🙏
