Which bank doesn't charge ATM fees for withdrawing CalWORKs Cash Aid?

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share some good news - my CalWORKs Cash Aid and CalFresh benefits finally got approved after dealing with verification issues for almost 3 months! They loaded everything on my EBT card yesterday including my retroactive payments (thank goodness because rent is due next week). But now I'm trying to figure out which bank ATMs I can use that won't charge those crazy withdrawal fees? Last time I tried taking money out, I got hit with a $3.50 fee at the corner store ATM. Does anyone know which banks let you withdraw CalWORKs money without fees? Or does the county have partner banks where it's free? Thanks in advance!

Congrats on getting your benefits! Bank of America is the issuer of the California EBT cards, so you can withdraw cash for FREE at any Bank of America ATM. Just make sure it's actually a BofA ATM, not just a BofA branch that has another company's ATM inside (those will still charge fees). Also, many grocery stores let you get cash back when making a purchase with no extra charge - just buy something small like a pack of gum and ask for cash back.

Thank you so much! Going to look for a Bank of America ATM today. Good tip about the cash back at grocery stores too - didn't think of that!

AVOID THOSE LIQUOR STORE ATMS!!!! They charge like $4.75 now in some places! Totally ROBBERY when ur already struggling! I got my cash aid card stolen last month and the thief took out $380 at one of those atms before I could report it. County says they cant replace stolen benefits!!!! So mad about this system!!

That's awful about your card being stolen! Just FYI though, if someone stole your card and used it without your permission, you CAN get that money back. You need to file an EBT theft report with your county office within 90 days. Call your worker right away and tell them you need to report "benefit theft" specifically. The law changed in 2021 to allow them to replace stolen benefits. Don't let them tell you otherwise!

Wait really? Only 4 free withdrawals? I didn't know there was a limit. Do you know if that's per calendar month or rolling 30 days?

I had the same question when i got my CalWorks last year!! Bank of America is free and also i think Golden1 credit union but not 100% sure on that one. What i do is just take all my rent money out at once in one transaction at BofA then just keep small amount for daily stuff in my purse. saves on those withdrawal limits.

This is what I do too. Take out exactly what I need for bills all at once. Makes it easier to budget anyway. Been on CalWORKs since my baby was born 9 months ago. BTW congrats on getting approved! The waiting is so hard.

Just an FYI for everyone dealing with CalWORKs benefits - if you're having trouble reaching your county worker to resolve issues with your Cash Aid or EBT card, I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that helped me get through directly to a live person. I was stuck in the "on hold forever then disconnected" cycle trying to get my benefits transferred after moving counties. Through Claimyr.com they got me connected to an actual worker in under 25 minutes when I had been trying for days. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE - definitely worth it when you're dealing with urgent benefit issues!

Does this actually work???? I've been trying to reach my stupid worker for 2 WEEKS about my overdue redetermination! If I don't get it fixed by Monday my benefits will stop AGAIN and I CAN'T AFFORD THAT RIGHT NOW!

To answer the question about the 4 withdrawal limit - yes, that's correct. California EBT cards give you 4 free ATM withdrawals per calendar month at Bank of America ATMs. After that, there's a $1.00 fee per withdrawal. This reset on the 1st of each month. Remember you can also do cash back at stores for free (that doesn't count against your 4 withdrawals). Also, when you withdraw, try to take out exactly what you need because many ATMs only dispense in $20 increments, meaning you might leave money on your card that you intended to withdraw.

This is SO helpful! I definitely need to be strategic about this since I get paid twice a month from my part-time job plus the CalWORKs comes once a month. Going to try to just do two bigger withdrawals per month instead of lots of small ones.

Congratulations on getting your benefits! Just to add to what others have said, you can also check your EBT card balance and transaction history by calling the number on the back of your card (1-877-328-9677) or on the website (www.ebt.ca.gov). This way you can see if you've been charged any fees and keep track of your remaining balance. It's also good to monitor for any suspicious activity since benefit theft has unfortunately become more common. Make sure you change your PIN regularly and never share it with anyone!

the whole system is DESIGNED to nickel and dime us poor people i swear!!!! why do we only get 4 free withdraws when rich people get unlimited?? and why do we have to pay ANYTHING to access OUR OWN MONEY?? the county should be required to give us our full benefits without any bank taking a cut thru fees!!!!

I feel you ❤️ The system is definitely stacked against us. Every dollar counts when you're on benefits. But at least knowing about the BofA free withdrawals helps a little bit. I try to just be grateful that we have *something* to help, even if it's not perfect.
