I called my worker yesterday about something else and asked about this. There's NO emergency deposit scheduled for April 17th. What might be happening is that the regular CalWORKs payment for May is coming on April 30th (it's always the last day of the month for the following month). But I haven't heard anything about emergency money. Where did your cousin hear this from?

ugh i knew it was too good to be true. she said she heard it from someone at the county office when she was there for her redetermination. maybe they were talking about something else and she misunderstood.

I think your cousin might be confusing it with the Golden State Stimulus that happened back in the day. CalWORKs doesn't do random emergency deposits without a specific reason. If you're behind on bills though, you might qualify for emergency assistance - but you'd need to apply specifically for that.

This is correct. CalWORKs doesn't issue automatic emergency deposits on random dates. However, if you're struggling with bills, there are specific programs you can apply for:1. Emergency cash assistance for utilities (if you have a shut-off notice)2. Homeless Assistance payment if you're at risk of eviction3. Immediate Need payment if you have an urgent situation while your CalWORKs application is pendingYou need to specifically request these from your worker, provide documentation of the emergency, and they aren't automatic for everyone on a specific date.

There is NO emergency deposit! I work for the county (not eligibility but different dept) and we would have been told about something like this. People are ALWAYS spreading rumors about \

This happens EVERY YEAR! Remember last October when everyone was saying there was gonna be a special deposit for school supplies? And nothing happened. Or in January when people said there was a cost of living \

Those rumors drive me CRAZY!!! Especially because some people make financial decisions expecting that money, and then they're in an even worse situation when nothing comes. Always verify with your worker directly!

Have you tried calling your eligibility worker to confirm? If you're having trouble reaching them, I would recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation last month - heard about a possible benefit change and couldn't get through to my worker for days. Claimyr helped me get connected to a live person at CalWORKs in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. Worth it to get accurate information straight from your worker instead of relying on rumors.

If you have a PG&E shutoff notice, you should apply for LIHEAP through your local community action agency right away. That's separate from CalWORKs and can provide up to $1,000 for utility assistance. Also ask your worker about the non-recurring special needs payment for utilities - CalWORKs can sometimes provide up to $750 for utility emergencies if you haven't received that payment in the last 12 months.

My neighbor gets CalWORKs and she said her worker told her there's some kinda supplemental payment coming but it's only for people with kids under 2 for diapers or something? Maybe that's what your cousin was talking about? Not sure if it's April 17 specifically though.

Your neighbor is referring to the Diaper Stipend Program. Families on CalWORKs with children under 3 years old receive an additional $30 per month per eligible child for diaper expenses. This isn't a one-time emergency payment - it's added to the regular monthly benefit for eligible households. It's been part of CalWORKs since 2020-2021, so it's not new. The payment date would be the same as your regular CalWORKs payment date.

wait im confused... does EVERYONE with small kids get the diaper money automatically or do we have to apply for it separately??? i have a 2 year old but dont think im getting any extra $30... now im wondering if im missing out on money i should be getting

If you have a child under age 3 and receive CalWORKs, you should automatically receive the diaper benefit of $30 per month per eligible child. You don't need to apply separately. Check your benefit breakdown - it should list it specifically as

Since we're talking about extra money - don't forget to check if you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit too if you're working. It's tax season and that can be a huge help. Not related to CalWORKs but just wanted to mention it since we're discussing possible extra funds.
